Re: Gestational Diabetes Testing Thread

  • Took the test yesterday and just got a call that I passed but am anemic as well and need to start taking iron.

    What I personally did:
    - Night before I had a spinach salad with goat cheese, almonds, chicken sausage with olive oil and balsamic vinegar.  Limited my sugar intake to 50g for the entire day.
    - Woke up at 700AM and ate 1 scrambled egg with 16 oz of water.
    - Took a shower and began to drink my drink at 740AM (got to keep it in my fridge- sprite/lemon/lime flavor)
    - Finished drink at 745AM
    - Drank some water (8 oz or so) in between because 20 mins after I started to feel like I just ate 3 candy bars
    - Went to the lab to have my blood drawn for 840AM
  •  :# i got a message from the nurse saying they needed more blood. I was starting to freak that i didn’t pass or they lost it. Well no just turns out they thought i needed to retest my thyroid but i don’t since my endo just tested it. Results look good otherwise. Gave me a small scare there.

  • The nurse called and I failed my glucose test :( not a surprise but would’ve been cool to pass it!  But I had called last week and asked them to add to the order to check my potassium because I was feeling slightly symptomatic and it did come back low at 2.8.  Not nearly as bad as last pregnancy (it was 1.3 and I had to be in the hospital for 4 days to get it to come back up) but I do have to go in today for IV replacement.  So hopefully it comes up quickly and I’m out of there later today/tonight.  I just have to go to triage to do it rather than being admitted.

  • @Sarafuss I'm sorry you failed...was that the 1 hour, or did you skip that and just do the 3 hour? I've never heard of low potassium, what kind of symptoms made you ask to test it?
  • Yeah. I just got the call. I passed my 3 hour (I opted to bypass the 1 hour this time).
  • @zande2016 it was the 1-Hour.  I failed with a 214 (they wanted it under 129).  So I’m not doing the 3-hour and I know I have GD with my history.  I’m just happy I made it this far (passed my 1-hour at 12 weeks with a 94).

My nurse said in all of the years she’s been doing this she’s never heard of low potassium being an issue in pregnancy except for me lol.  In my last pregnancy I had really fatigued muscles in my upper thighs.  Like I ran a marathon but hadn’t done any activity like that. Then when I tried walking up the stairs one day and on the first step my legs just buckled and I couldn’t even get myself back up because my muscles were so fatigued.  So a week or so ago I started noticing that my muscles were feeling slightly fatigued and I asked the nurse to add potassium to the blood work order that I was getting done this morning.  And sure enough it was low.  Not as low as last pregnancy though.  So I’m here at the hospital overnight.  Potassium through the IV sucks because it burns!

Ask them to numb using lidocaine and have ice bags over the site
  • Testing today at 1:25 ish. I said to the midwife, "Oh yeah I know, fast an hour before you take it." and she was like, no no no, don't fast! Eat totally normally until you take it, then don't eat. So since that is a bit different from the last two times, here's hoping I pass!
  • Today is my day for the glucose test. My office does a 2 hour fasting one. Drink wasn’t to bad- I choose orange versus the fruit punch.  While waiting I’ll have my 28 week appointment as well. Already feel crummy after drinking it but I’ve also been up since 3 AM due to DD waking from storm.
  • So I was able to get out of my 2nd three hour glucose test (I failed the one hour with a 178 and the three hour on my first draw after the drink was 198 but all others were normal) OB requested I retake the 3-hour but I have modified my diet (no pasta, no bread, no potatoes increased protein) and he said since I have been doing that and I already had a big baby, DS was 9.2 lbs, he is ok with me not taking it again. He said they will just monitor my blood sugar periodically.

So, I originally did a 1 hour glucose test at 7 weeks because I had GD with my first pregnancy. I failed that and took the 3 hour. My ob said I passed that one and she wanted to retest later in pregnancy I opted to go straight to the 3 hour and, as I posted earlier, passed with flying colors. I began seeing an MFM at 24 weeks due to my baby having a cleft. It is a group of 6 doctors and it’s whoever goes to that location that day. So today’s MFM was new to me. The last MFM reviewed everything with me and said I had failed the 1 hour but passed the 3 hour.  he confirmed I would need to retest soon and said I should be “lowering my carbs and exercising”. (Without asking what my diet/exercise regimen was). Today’s MFM told me I had FAILED the original 3 hour test and he thought it strange they had me retest at all. Then says because I clearly passed the second test I am “borderline” or possibly have very mild GD. He said he isn’t going to make me test blood sugars yet but I “need to reduce my carbs” (again without asking what my diet was). Then he and the nurse start going into how if I eat too many carbs, even without gd, it’ll cause baby’s sugars to go crazy and she’ll pee too much and cause too much amniotic fluid.

Seriously?  Can I just have ONE MFM because 1.) I don’t need specialists conflicting with each other 2.) I don’t need the added stress of worry about what they say I’m doing wrong NEXT. And FYI I’ve only gained 6 pounds (as of today’s weight) this entire pregnancy and I can guarantee that tomorrow morning if I weigh myself it would be lower that this afternoon’s weight. I’ll be 29 weeks tomorrow. Baby weighs 3 pounds, but has very long arm/leg bones (especially considering how short I am). He made it sound like I am going to have a gigantic baby. Not pleased. At. All.
