Subchorionic bleeding / hematoma

hi there,
I’m 6 weeks and yesterday I had the scariest experience of my life. I was bleeding so badly I was surely convinced that I was having a miscarriage. Devastated, I called my doctor and headed straight to their office to be seen. Somehow, everything with the baby is fine (we even got to hear the heartbeat for the first time) but wow what a scare to hear about subchorionic bleeding. I didn’t know this was a possibility! I’m on doctored ordered “bed rest” for the rest of the week/weekend. Hoping that the situation clears itself and memoir pregnancy moves on without issue.

So scary. Anyone else experience this?

I just left my docs office with the same exact news. We have a heart beat but I have a hemorrhage and have been bleeding since Monday. My doc didn’t put me on bed rest but has referred me to a high risk specialist due to my past complications.
  • Hi there.

Ive had two. One with my daughter who is now 3. I was so scared the first bleeding incident I had... was on rest from 11-28 weeks. She came at 33 weeks but is thriving like you wouldn’t believe!

My last pregnancy ended late January of this year and I also had one. My OB has told me he’s pretty sure it had nothing to do with the S.H.

Let me know if you need more info. I would suggest lots of fluids and rest as much as possible. Hugs.
  • I had one at about 6 weeks with my DS. Kept bleeding from the transvaginal ultrasound and pelvic exam! I’m rH negative I also got an emergency rhogam. Everything proceeded normally from there. Fx for sticky bean!

I've had one with every pregnancy but never an issue until this one. I miscarried my first and second pregnancies. This is my third.
I started spotting slightly last Monday, but it went away very quickly. Had a sonogram on Wednesday where they found twins and a mild SCH. Doctor told me not to stress and to have a follow up scan this Friday.
Saturday I started spotting again and then bleeding. Freaking out I went straight to the ER where I had another sono. They could only find 1 baby and a low heart rate (68). I was dated at 6w0d but should have been 6w5d. Placed on pelvic and bed rest.
Followed up with my doctor on Monday, another scan, still 2 sacs but only 1 heartbeat (68 again), SCH gone, dated at 6w0d again (should have been 7 weeks). Doctor gave this pregnancy a 50/50 chance. He is not sure what is causing the spotting, but thinks it may be from the SCH. Still on pelvic and bed rest. Another scan Monday which should give us a better picture. Thankfully my HCG continues to rise appropriately. Praying Monday baby is on track and has a high heartbeat and maybe the second sac will have a baby too.
    Sending positive vibes your way.
  • Last preganncy i had a SCH and was put on bedrest for the weekend as well. I bled off an off heavy and light throughout the remainder of my pregnancy. My son is now 18 months and my delivery was uncomplicated. Hoping everything goes well for yiu.
  • @AshleyGemini24 - you mentioned you bled on and off throughout your pregnancy. I’m a bit nerve wracked right now because I just started bleeding again. (I originally bled last Tuesday / Wednesday and then it stopped). I kept my activity really light for a week but headed back to work today (which requires two trains and a good amount of walking in nyc). Now I’m bleeding again, a good amount. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow morning but In the meantime I’m slightly freaking out. Didn’t realize the sch could come back. Help!
  • A SCH is basically the chord or placenta trying to seperate. It is like any normal cut that you have. Only a little more fragile. So say you have a cut on your finger. It scabs over. Then you scrape it foing the dishes. It bleeds again. Scabs over and you scrape it again opening the mail. It bleeds again. I know Thats a poor comparison but it's the best i could think of at the moment. You have to limit yourself. I know life is busy and we gotta fo what we gotta do. But keep in mind that you are growing a fragile tiny human being.
The dr i was first going to described it to me this way though. Imagine your baby as a stawberry in a bowl of jello. And the placenta as the jello. You can scoop a little jello off the top of the bowl without harming the strawberry inside.
Just be careful and take it easy and if it worries you feel free to go to ER for ultrasound. They can't deny you. Lord knows i was a frequent flyer throughout my pregnancy.
  • I just found out I have an SCH today. I guess that was why I was having the sharp pains. I know they can be common though and I’ve known a lot of people to recover just fine and have healthy pregnancies
  • @AshleyGemini24 thank you! I love your comparison and it makes total sense. I’ve just been doing too much. Even though I was trying to relax last week. I really appreciate your advice.

My doctor told me the baby looks completely fine today during my ultrasound so I feel relieved. He said the SCH could come back and I might still experience bleeding a few more times before it completely heals. I’m really just going to take it easy this week and again cross my fingers that it gets better.  ❤️
  • @peanutmommy1212 I'm always around if u wanna talk about it and have any worries. I try to check The Bump at least once or twice a day. And feel free to PM too if need be.

Hi @peanutmommy1212  I'm in the same boat. Today 6w 3d (third pregnancy, hopefully 2nd baby)
Sunday just gone (6w) i went to the loo and wiped bright red blood, that night in the shower passed 2 decent clots. Convinced I was miscarrying again I went to bed and prepared myself for the bloodbath.. woke up Monday and nothing... went to the Dr and was sent for urgent scan. Saw teeny baby and a heartbeat which totally surprised us and Dr saw small SCH plus another pocket of fluid. She told me everything looked fine and sent me on my way. What an emotional roller coaster!! Was told to rest for the week. Now Wed and I've had minor light pink spotting when wiping a few times a day, doesn't make it to a liner, but no "bleeding" since. I am also doing acupuncture to support this pregnancy.
I hate the anxiety of wondering what you'll see everytime you go to the toilet. Hoping that rest and plenty of water helps shrink it and the rest of my pregnancy is as uneventful my first one!! (son now 2.5years old).
I've only had minor pregnancy symptoms; sore boobs for a few hours at a time, fleeting moments of nausea and watery mouth, but HCG levels are doing what they should. I would rather have violent morning sickness than deal with blood and the related anxiety everyday!! First successful pregnancy I had NO symptoms at all except fatigue between 7-10 weeks.
  • @gbear85 sorry to hear you’re going through this too. The anxiety is awful and I completely agree that I would trade this with awful morning sickness in a heartbeat. Just keep going one day at a time, hopefully both our situations resolve themselves. ❤️
  • I was just diagnosed with this as well. I've been having spotting on and off for the past few weeks and then on Tuesday night I had an actual bleed. Went in for a sonogram yesterday and that's when they found it. It's scary but I'm also relieved that there is a reason for this spotting/bleeding I've been having. My doctor said no exercise/strenuous activity and no heavy lifting for the next month. All of you ladies having to deal with this are in my thoughts, I'm hoping this resolves quickly for all of us!
