1st Trimester

How long does it take you to get a BFP? And when?

Hello there I'm a total newbie. My husband and I is newlywed and TTC . I did a Abon Hcg test the other day and got 2 BFN. I think either I tested too soon ( 3 days late ) or I didn't follow the instruction precisely ( it was my first time doing a HPT oh well ) . I'm now waiting until next Monday when I'd be 10 days late to test again .

I just wanna ask how long does it take you to get a BFP and when? I feel like waiting is killing me while I have to keep enduring cramps and nausea and fatigue. I kinda want AF back ahhh

  • Are you tracking your cycle? Temping, opks, etc? Without that it’s hard to pin point when and if you ovulated. Understand that each month you only have a 20% chance of getting pregnant- even for the healthiest couple. Give it a few days and test again with first morning urine. If still negative and no AF see your doctor. It’s not always as easy as just doing the deed. Many of us have gone through long periods of TTC or have faced other challenges. Early “symptoms” could also be from your progesterone increasing before a period or confirmed pregnancy. It’s a waiting game unfortunately. Best of luck!

Yeah I've been tracking my cycle using an app called Flo for over one year now. My cycle lasts  27- 33 days. I'm currently on day 38. I guess I should clarify my question as how long it takes you to get a BFP since you know you're late?

You may have ovulated later than usual. You would normally be able to turn a pregnancy test if your period is really 3 days late. There is a lot of good information about ttc on the trying to get pregnant board.

Although a quick note- there are many women on The Bump who have been ttc for many years on 1st Tri, TTGP, etc, or who have had losses. You may want to avoid pining for AF- it’s fairly insensitive to the struggles many people go through to conceive.

I'm sorry for being insensitive. Thank you for the kind note .
  • @valkyrie90 aside from tracking your periods have you tracked when you ovulated? Your periods may be normal but you may or may not ovulate. I got all my positives before my period was due so sorry I’m not much help with that. I’ve read to give yourself at least a week after a missed period. Your period can also be delayed due to stress or other emotional and health factors. Just have to wait. If you go a full month without a period and no positive tests see your doctor.
  • You say you've been tracking your periods over the past year, but have you been on birth control at any point during that time? I was on the pill for 10+ years before TTC and thought I had a consistent 28-29 day cycle. But when I went off the pill and started tracking my periods and temperatures I found that an unmedicated cycle was actually 35 days and I ovulated on day 22. So you might not actually be late yet.

  • If you were on birth control, it's entirely possible your body is regulating and that's why your cycles are off.  I had a 40+ day cycle (27-28 is normal for me) coming off of BC because it took my body 30 days to actually ovulate.
  •     I've never been on pill so it's not the reason. I just did another test and still got a BFN. The waiting game is still on. I'm just curious any of you ever on the same boat ?
  • Bless you @izza2

The above posters are right. You should turn a test by the time you are late if you are, in fact, pregnant (and if your periods are fairly regular, so you know when you are late).

I have had this happen. I wasn't pregnant. My period was a week late (highly unusual for me), but I did ultimately get it. The month I did get pregnant, I turned a test the day my period was due.
