Hospital bag must-haves

Seems like there are still some of us lurking around who haven't met our little ones yet! What do you have packed in your hospital bag? And for second-time mamas, what're you packing (and also *NOT* packing) this time around?

    Must haves are my snacks and nursing pillow. They were super great though I didn't make it through all the snacks last time it really helps when the cafeteria is closed. I bought a few lactation bars too so maybe it'll help my milk come in quicker once baby comes.
    This is baby number two so I'm packing just the basic needs clothes for partner and I stay and babies going home outfit. General higenics stuff since the shampoo and stuff sucked last time. Fluffy socks, a magazine, charger and a fan for in labor. I think that's about it though. All in one bag. Oh and bring a extra bag too bc I'm going to grab as many mesh panties, ice packs and diapers as possible when we leave

    I'm a FTM so I'm sure I'm overpacking but in our country even private hospitals basically provide nothing! 

    I just finalised my bag and have: 
    slippers
    pajamas
    toiletries for both of us 
    linen savers
    maternity pads
    toilet wipes
    outfit to go home 
    mesh panties
    chargers, phones and camera 
    food for mh as he won't get meals, snacks
    pajamas for him and clean outfit
    makeup

    car seat installed
    identity documents and hospital documents
    nail clipper for baby
    baby comb 
    body and hair wash
    cotton balls
    nappies 
    wipes
    receiver
    nipple creme
    breast pads
    surgical spirits
    bum creme
    maternity bras x 2
    baby hats x 2
    two baby grows 
    warm blanket to go home 
    scratch mittens

    I'd call and check with your hospital because most usually offer diapers, wipes, baby clothes, hat, nose sucker & blankets for baby. For us moms they usually have mesh panties (life saver), pads, toilet paper & iced pads. So a lot of the things you've packed. You'll still need going home baby clothes and such but yeah.
    As for make up I'd skip it honestly there was no time or energy to do it personally. Also nipple cream is pointless just express some milk onto your nipple after you finish nursing it heals cracks & protects so much better then any of the creams I've used.
    Sorry just trying to help you lighten the load a bit there. But definitely call them and clear up if they will provide anything. Both hospitals I've gone to provided a lot.

    Stm here. Our hospital provides a lot of stuff. My basic plan (I'm not packed yet even though my c-section is in 15 days lol!) Is to pack:
    -nipple cream (I needed it really badly with my last)
    -nursing pillow
    -comfy clothes for me
    -two sizes of take home outfits for babe
    -cloth diapers for go home day
    -big water bottle (I love their ice water but the cups are too small lol)
    -toiletries for me (hubby is going home at night so he doesn't need them)
    -phone, charger, book to read. 

    And that's about it. 

    90% of what I packed for my first kid didn't even get taken out of the bag. The hospital provided diapers, wipes, mesh panties, pads, baby sleepers, recieving blankets, formula... you name it they basically throw it at you. They even told me to put as much as I wanted in my bag when I went home.

    FTM, I don't have a bag packed yet, but should probably do so this weekend. Thanks STMs for the ino that you provided so far. I wasn't even thinking about bringing a boppy or nursing pillow, but looks like it might be a must have!

    Try to express milk onto your nipple after you finish nursing baby. Seriously had terrible cracked and brusied nipples from crappy nurses being to aggressive teaching me to nurse my first. I had little to no healing from the nipple creams and balms but my cousin told me to try my rubbing my milk on them after and they got better within the week.

    I personally didn’t mind wearing the hospital gowns (things get messy, nurses pushing on your stomach/lactation specialist coming to check on you and baby, and 1 less thing to bring home for laundry).

    I also had no problems using the hospital pillows as a stand in Boppy Pillow. Once again 1 less thing to bring.


    My short list:

    My going home comfy outfit

    Baby’s going home outfit

    Toiletries

    Phone charger

    Video camera for when big brother visits

    Extra bag for all the “free” goodies to take home


    My hospital provides everything else for me and baby.

    I've gone to the prenatal class at my hospital and nope they don't provide anything! I live in South Africa.

    Jeez well then I'd say you packed just fine then. Good luck hun wish they provide more but you should have everything needed.

    I know it stinks! When I asked if they provide anything they looked at me blankly. Yet in the USA people take so much home lol! They said that there's no way they could afford it.

    I don't know how much your labor and delivery costs in South Africa but I'm sure they blow up our prices in the usa bc of those accommodations and such. I'm kinda terrified to know how much we're going to be billed and how much the insurance is billed.

    It's definitely not cheap to have a baby especially if any intervention is needed. I'm pretty sure whatever is 'free' is built into insurance costs or comes from government subsidies or something.

    SNACKS - decided on graham crackers, gummies, and a homemade trail mix for this time. I remember being so hungry the first time with the worst options to choose from after labor. I desperately wanted ice cream and was given the sugar free version :(

    Phone charger

    Nursing pillow - didn't bring it the first time around and their set up was so uncomfortable. The nursing pillow would have made things much easier and more comfortable. 

    Tight yoga pants to hold everything together after labor. 

    CHAP STICK

    I did not bring a pump, and it worked out great. They supplied all the pump parts and I ended up with an extra set which was awesome. 

    Flip flops - for the shower... I did not want to touch the floor of the shower.

    I will also say, with my hospital I really didn't need anything for baby save a going home outfit. Everything is provided and more than adequate.
