Painting a room while pregnant?

We are a couple of weeks away from putting our house on the market and I have 1 room left to paint (thankfully I got everything else done before my BFP). Unfortunately, I don’t trust my husband to not make a huge fat mess and we don’t want to tell anyone I am pregnant and ask for some help. Aghhh!! If I wear a mask and open windows do you think it’s okay?! I don’t have a dr. visit until later this week.

Re: Painting a room while pregnant?

  • Are you using low VOC paint and circulating the air with open windows & fans (weather permitting)?

  • I think it depends on what the paint is made with, and if you come in contact with it. When I paint, I tend to get it on myself. I think that's a google question though. I've been meaning to look it up too, because I'm in a similar spot. My SO and I are supposed to be sanding & staining a deck this week, and now I'm wondering if he should do the gig without me.
  • I can certainly open a window and get a fan going. It says VOC <50 g/L... whatever that means.

I suppose I CAN wait and talk to my dr. later this week. I’m just super anxious about getting this house done and I was hoping to have this project completed this weekend so next weekend I can do all my wrap up stuff and have it ready to go.
  • From what I remember from my last pregnancy, I think most paint is ok as long as you have ventilation. However, I believe paint thinner is a no go. Definitely can’t hurt to touch base with your doctor first. Maybe you can just call the nurses line and ask them?

@rosebud332 that’s what I was also going to suggest.

  • I painted a ceiling today and I didn’t even think about it until we were finishing up... oops. At least the room was well ventilated.
  • A mask and good ventilation should be okay. It sounds like you've already bought your paint but they also make low fume paint.

  • Hello . I was painting our bathroom with my husband while pregnant and didn't know about it , so I didn't use any mask or precautions . Thank God my baby was born healthy .   Point is if you really have to paint ,- use nontoxic paints and do wear mask and open windows . I would talk to doctor about it as well .
  • Lurking from August. It should be fine. My husband painted our bedroom when I was in the first trimester so I did not help but I will paint the nursery. Most paints now are low VOC. Don't use anything oil-based, no paint thinners, no stain. You will be fine.
