US mom moving to Canada

I’m a United States mommy who will be moving to Alberta in a couple weeks, in my third trimester. Is anyone from Canada? I, obviously, don’t know what to expect so I was hoping for some insights and possible recommendations for the Edmonton area.

Thanks!

  • Get a good winter coat.  Edmonton is SO COLD
  • I moved from Illinois to Nova Scotia last summer right before I got pregnant. My best suggestion is to get your MSI (medical card) as soon as possible if you plan on giving birth in Canada. Getting my card was the easiest part of moving here. It’s just a simple form with a couple questions, and you need a Canadian citizen to confirm that you live in Canada.

Im actually planning on traveling back to the US in June and giving birth in Michigan because that’s where my husband’s family lives, so unfortunately I don’t have much more info about what to expect at the hospital or how to register your baby for the necessary documentation after you give birth. You may want to call the local hospital to ask them how that works and let them know you are an American citizen. I’m not sure if you will need your visa already or not, but getting your visa should also be at the top of your to-do list. I hope that helps! Sorry I don’t have a ton of info because I also just moved here, but I wish you all the luck in the world!
