28 week finding

Hi mamas, we went in for our 28 week ultrasound and left with an "incidental" finding of an extra little pinky toe on our baby girls left foot. Up to this point, everything has been normal and on track- no soft markers for a chromosomal disorder and she is growing perfectly, heart looks great, etc. We also did the NIPT (natera panorama) testing and got low risk (<1/10,000) for everything. The doctor says he is not worried and thinks this is a random isolated thing that we can easily take care of once she is born. I was caught off guard though, as neither my husband nor I have had this run in our families- extra toes, fingers, etc. Does anyone have experience with this in an otherwise healthy baby? Any input or advice? I'm very thankful and know that the finding could have been a lot worse, but just looking for some support and confirmation from other mamas. Thanks so much!

Re: 28 week finding

  • No personal experience, but one of my facebook friends/college acquaintance has identical twins, and they were both born with extra pinky toes on each foot. They're totally healthy and typically developing toddlers from what I can tell, they just had surgery as babies (I want to say maybe around 6 months?) to remove the extra toes and that was that. It's good that the doctor doesn't seem concerned, and if there are no other markers or indications of chromosomal issues, I think your chances of having a healthy baby are really good! I know it is probably hard not to stress though.

  • @xmascitymama my nephew was supposed to have been born with an extra finger, but it ended up really just being like extra skin that they tied off and he was fine.  They thought it was a big deal, it's a chromosomal thing, but it ended up not being a big deal at all.  FX that's all it is and can be easily taken care of, but I think everything else coming out clear is a good sign!

  • @xmascitymama My cousin was born with an extra finger (I believe pinky). It was removed when he was a child and he had no other abnormalities. He's now 30 years old and a talented Emergency Room Physician :)
  • Great to hear. Thank you!
  • It can be tough but this support helps so much. Thank you!

xmascitymama My sister was born with 12 toes and perfectly healthy. Typically if there is no bone in the toe they can tie it off at birth and it will eventually fall off. My sister had bone in both toes. They told my mom she can leave them they aren't hurting anything its more of a cosmetic look or they can be removed. We lived in Florida at the time and they said she would have to wait a year to be put under anesthesia to get it done. Ultimately they decided to have the surgery and remove the toes. she has two small scars from the stitches and other than that no problems.

    Hope this helps.

**Edited to add they didn't find out about her toes until she was born, never came up on an Ultrasound.
