Working out during first trimester

Hi everyone - I want to start a conversation about working out during the first trimester. Most of the information I'm finding online seems to be directed more toward the second and third trimester -- when your belly has more of an impact on your physical ability.

What workouts is everyone doing to stay  fit during your first trimester? Are there any workouts that you're avoiding?

I've talked to my Dr. and I plan on continuing my same workouts until I can't anymore. My regular workouts are running, pilates, and personal training.

I haven't told my trainers yet, but I feel like I should soon. My hesitation is that I workout at work, and my trainers also train my colleagues. I'm waiting to tell work as long as I can, and I don't want it to accidentally slip. Last week I said I wasn't feeling well so I was going to take it easy...but I can only pull that for so long

  • Hi @bumpitup We started a thread called Fit Mom Friday, so we will start new ones each Friday. There are a bunch of moms who are interested in fitness who could give you opinions if you’d like to use that thread.
  • Thanks @Activebaby! I'll check it out!

I go to classes at my gym and have continued to do so.  So far I've just been to yoga & barre since I found out I was pregnant.  I'm comfortable continuing classes like cycling & zumba too, but I think I'm going to avoid the weights classes (which are usually my favorite) and high intensity bootcamps while pregnant, just to be safe.  I also ride my bike to and from work/school most days and plan to continue doing that throughout the first trimester at least.

*I'm also happy to wait til Friday to discuss this... just thought I'd reply here too!

@kadeephd don’t wait until Friday, just post in that thread so we can all talk together. We will start a new one each friday, but you can write in it whenever you want. At least that’s how I’m intending it.
  • @Activebaby I didn't see that there was already a thread started last Friday, I thought you meant that there would be one coming this Friday -- I posed on the one from last Friday too

  • @Activebaby @kadeephd I'm sorry I was the one to do it wrong the first time! Do I have newbie written all over me?
  • No worries when I update the fit Mom post I’m not going to write Friday - just week or month, then it will be a better title
  • So i went to heated power vinyasa yoga today... i have never loved child's pose so much in my life. Can't balance, short of breath, dizzy when I stand up too fast. Lord help me. I usually go 3-4 times a week but today was the first time I just felt weak
  • @bumpitup I am a newbie too  no worries!

  • Last year I was a PiYo regular when I got a BFP. I told my instructor right away because I was getting winded faster, having trouble with the fast up & down moves, plus needed pee breaks without judgement. She was super supportive, and it was nice telling someone. After that one was lost, she was also the first one to come see me (and hasn’t given me any crap about stoping PiYo).

This time I am just trying to stretch everyday, to keep my joints strong and limber. I also have a cycledesk, and I try to cycle at least 30 mins each day when browsing maternity clothes online, or house hunting on Zillow.

-Slow & steady this time, with fingers crossed!

  • Lurker here. Just jumping in to say that unless you are given specific restrictions by your doctor due to something making you high risk, you can continue doing whatever you were doing when you got pregnant.

I ran a half marathon when I was 6.5 weeks pregnant with my son and this pregnancy I will be doing a Spartan race (9-10 mile run, 25-30 obstacles) at 12 weeks. I do Crossfit, yoga, HIIT, and running, and haven't had to make any adjustments yet at 8 weeks.

Biggest things are to stay hydrated, don't do anything dumb that could injure you (just like if you weren't pregnant), slow it down if anything hurts in a way that it shouldn't, and avoid exercises flat on your back once you're 4 months along.

@vrj0522 I did a half (my first actually) when I was 6.5 weeks pregnant with my son! The only issue was that I was so emotional - lots of tears when I finished under my goal lol

  • @runrinserepeat - haha! That's awesome! FWIW, I felt a very strong urge to cry when I finished my first half even though I wasn't pregnant at the time. I can only imagine how much more emotional it would have been if pregnant!!

  • @vrj0522 Congrats on your first half!! It's funny...I tear up watching other people finish, or thinking about finishing, but I have never cried at my own finishes! I guess I'm just too distracted by everything else going on.
  • I usually work out 3 times a week with weights, cycling, and HITT workouts, but honestly being in the first trimester has made me too nervous workout for fear of causing a miscarriage
  • I am currently lifting heavy (squat ~225#, bench ~112.5#, overhead press ~75#, and deadlift ~260#).  There is not a lot of good research on weight lifting, but I am hopeful I can continue on for some time.  Currently, something is up with my deadlifts.  On a Sunday I was able to pull 265# for four, then come Monday or Tuesday, I couldn't pull 260#.  So not sure if my energy is being sapped quicker, my form was poor before, or if my little seedlet is not happy with deadlifting.  Would love to connect with other pregnant weight lifters!
