Coming over from the September 2018 board...

Hello Mommies!

So excited but so nervous to be here. I just returned from Cancun, Mexico and found out we are expecting. Let’s just say what a shock.

I had a miscarriage end of January, and my husband and I needed a vacation away to relax and rejuvenate. We were absolutely devastated.  Looks like we are due around Dec 17th.

I am so so nervous to have another miscarriage, and on top of that, because of Zika... I wore bug spray and I don’t think I have any bites, but man am I worried. Calling the doctor to find out where to go from here.  Is anyone else in the same boat?

I am so hoping this pregnancy sticks so I can deliver a wonderful Christmas miracle for my husband and two children.

@musicalmommy3 I am in the exact same boat!  We went to Cancun (stayed in Akumal) March 20-25.  Found out I was pregnant March 26.  I've been extremely anxious about it, though like you I wore bug spray the whole time and don't remember any bites (or even seeing any mosquitoes).

When I went for my first ob appointment she referred me to a travel clinic.  I called them to see if I qualified for Zika testing.  Nowadays I believe the CDC is only approving testing of symptomatic pregnant women because the false positives are likely to outnumber the true positives if all asymptomatic pregnant women were tested.  Since I had a rash on my arms while in Mexico, I did qualify for testing.  I don't think it was a Zika rash... but who knows.  They said it will take 2 weeks to get my results.  In a way I am glad I was tested since I will hopefully get a negative result and it will set my mind at ease, but I'm so nervous it will not be negative.

I would advise you to look into testing in your state.  Every place does it a bit differently I think.  I can help you figure it out if you tell me where you live.

BTW I have researched Zika a good amount and here are two reassuring things I found:

Only 1 in 185 women in California tested positive for Zika
Confirmed cases of Zika in Mexico (official Mexican reports of Zika -- 0 in Quintana Roo, where Cancun is, in 2018 -- though this is likely not entirely accurate it's still reassuring)

Thank you so much for your response and your kindness!!! I’ve been busy today finding out where to get the testing done.  I am from Ontario, Canada and it was a long day asking where I could go and what I could do!

i just got home from my blood tests... They say it should take about 2 weeks. Going to be such a long wait!!!

I hope you had fun in Cancun, I sure did. The anxiety is crazy right now though. I have to just breathe.

Please keep me updated with your results!
  • @musicalmommy3 Glad you got it figured out!  I am anxiously awaiting my results too.  I've gotten a little less anxious over the last week (I did my blood test last Wednesday) so hopefully you will too.  Finger crossed for negative results for both of us.  Let me know when you hear!

  • Hey girls, I live in Brazil, where there was a huge outbreak of Zika, and here’s what I know: it might be a good idea to get tested just in case, but I wouldn’t get too worried unless you had the symptoms during your trip (joint pain, redness in eyes, fever, fatigue... like a flu). Remember that only one type of mosquito carries the Zika, so don’t over analyze every bite you had! I’m sure things will be fine! Good luck with the results!

  • @musicalmommy3 I'm Canadian too :)
Good luck with your test results.
H and I were TTC for a few months then we stopped due to timing and decided to book a trip down south. I did a lot of research on zika since we really didn't want to wait 6 months after returning to TTC again. More and more places are coming off the CDC's list all the time as it is becoming less common.
We ended up booking Bahamas as they were just removed and a few weeks later I found out I was pregnant so now I'm really happy about that choice. But hopefully the declining rates gives you some reassurance while you're waiting for your results!

I will let you know for sure... also keep me in the loop of yours!  I’ll be thinking of you for sure. I appreciate the kindness more than you’ll ever know!

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this. I have been trying to stay calm, I am just happy that they have allowed me to get the testing done. In Canada they don’t do it all of the time.  Sending love to Brazil right now!

Hello fellow Canadian!  I am so glad you chose somewhere that is now off the list. It really is worrisome!

Ill keep you updated with my results.  Sending you positive vibes in your pregnancy!

@mhobbes What is the testing like in Brazil?  Are you tested several times throughout your pregnancy or only if you have symptoms?  Are people really worried about it still?  It seems like cases have gone down dramatically.

@musicalmommy3 Thinking of you as I'm awake at 4 am worried about my test results.  Hoping you are dealing with your anxiety well.

The thing I'm most worried about at this point is a false positive.  I've had the yellow fever vaccine and I know it can mess with the results.  Hopefully I'll get negative results this week and can stop obsessing.  They said about two weeks... but said it could be longer too.  If I don't get results this week I know I'll assume the worst.

  • @kadeephd I will be thinking of you! I hope you can rest ok.

I understand what you mean about the false positive. I am also soooo worries about that. Keep me updated!
