Re: High Risk Check In - Week of 4/10

    • How far along are you? 4 + 5
    • Why are you high-risk? I am lupus anticoagulant positive and have a history of DVT (blood clot). I also had pre-e last pregnancy and lost vision in my left eye (it came back!). I also get very frequent infections I ended up with a picc-line during my last pregnancy. I have also had 2 unexplained bouts of c-diff in the past year so it is likely I will get it again.
    • Any additional monitoring or testing this week? I have an apt tomorrow evening. I will get my rx for lovenox and I will do nightly injections throughout pregnancy and for awhile after.
    • Rants/Raves/Questions? I am a little nervous as this is a new OB for me. I left my previous OB because she just seemed at a loss during my pregnancy. I did a preconception apt with this ob and he felt very confident that he could handle my medical history and that I was cleared to get pregnant again. So we will see!

Any additional monitoring or testing this week?

I just have to check my blood sugars like crazy. I have an appointment with my endocrinologist tomorrow, so I am hoping we get to make some adjustments to my insulin pump settings.

    Rants/Raves/Questions?

I have been so frustrated with my blood sugars. It seems like ever since I got my positive, my numbers have been running so high and I've been insulin resistant. I don't remember them being high like this in the beginning last time. I definitely remember them being super low all the time just before I hit second trimester, so I guess I get to look forward to that soon too.

    • How far along are you?
    5 weeks 4 days!
    • Why are you high-risk?
I have a thyroid autoimmune disease (hashimoto's thyroiditis) and I also had postpartum thyroiditis after the birth of my daughter and it's been much harder to get my thyroid to stay stable since then, and I have had to see my endocrinologist much more frequently. Also, AMA and **TW have had two miscarriages in the last year** but I'm not sure if the latter factors in or not. Mostly just the thyroid issues.
    • Any additional monitoring or testing this week?
Not this week! I saw my endocrinologist right away when pregnant and luckily my numbers were in range this time (**TW they were well out of range when I had my MMC, so I was very relieved they were good this time) so we're keeping my dose the same for now and I see her in about three weeks.
    • Rants/Raves/Questions?
No real rant, but I just wish that thyroid levels were something I could monitor at home, kind of like insulin so I'd know *immediately* if something went out of range and get in touch with my doctor. My thyroid numbers have been so wildly back and forth since my DD was born, even with monitoring every 4 weeks, it's just so scary in the first trimester when stability is so key to development. I will be so relieved once I'm (hopefully) safely out of the first tri.

@mckcak23 Wow, that's crazy you lost vision in one of your eyes! I hope things going smoothly this time and your new OB is great.

@mi@mittenlove86 So sorry you've been having trouble with your blood sugars this early. I hope your appointment with your endocrinologist goes well and you guys can get them under control!
  • @mckcak23 I found out I had malignant hypertension when I wasn’t pregnant because of changes in my vision! I woke up one morning with a spot in my vision. I am an eye doctor, so I immediately had a colleague look at me and sure enough I had retinal changes due to my blood pressure. Ended up spending 2 days in the hospital trying to figure out why and still never figured out why. My retina is back to normal now but I still have a very small spot in my vision that is missing. Most people have no idea how much things that are happening elsewhere in your body can affect your eyes!

I’m glad to hear you regained all of your vision :)

  • @mittenlove86 The dr didn't even believe me that it was pregnancy related. I noticed at the beginning of my 3rd trimester that everything was starting to get fuzzier. Then at 34 weeks I developed floaters. I was hospitalized over night where they gave me the lung shot and said that I should try to follow up neurology but that it wasn't pregnancy related. The following Thursday I had my regular OB apt and told her that the flashing floaters had mostly taken over and it was really distracting. She told me she was going to schedule my induction for 37 weeks and that I should just hold out. The next day I had my mfm apt and at the end of the apt I mentioned something about not being able to drive anymore because I couldn't see out of my left eye and the Dr flipped out. It took me totally off guard because my OB could have cared less. The MFM told me I was going to be induced and I asked if I could run home and take my dogs for boarding and get dinner. She told me no, that they were going to come get me now and they were starting the mag drip in office.
    • How far along are you?
               7 weeks!
    • Why are you high-risk?
Facor V Leiden (clotting disorder) with a history of clots prior to pregnancy.
    • Any additional monitoring or testing this week?
Started blood thinner injections (Dalteparin) as soon as I got a BFP. First ultrasound booked for next week.
    • Rants/Raves/Questions?
The injections are terribly painful!! Do you ever get used to them?? It's not the needle but the medication itself ugh! Worth it for little babe of course :)
  • I'm sorry I can't tag you with the knottie name but I found during my last pregnancy that while the idea still made my squrim when I thought about it the shots themselves got easier as pregnancy went on. Though I will say it was a totally different ball game postpartum.
  • How far along are you? 6w2d

Why are you high-risk? Besides being AMA, I had a chorioangioma on my placenta when I was pregnant with my daughter, which caused an inter-uterine growth restriction, however she born at 39w1d and was/is healthly as can be!

Any additional monitoring or testing this week? I saw my OB this past Wednesday for an "early pregnancy" appointment, but I don't go in for my official appointment until Thursday the 19th

Rants/Raves/Questions? I need to find a new MFM. The group I used for my last pregnancy were really awful, they kept saying I could deliver vaginally (I couldn't - I had a C-section) and they told me 4 weeks before my due date that my daughter was measuring at 6 pounds with the potential to grow 0.5 pounds per week (she was born 5lb. 4oz.) I'm hoping my OB can recommend someone else and doesn't mind my switching as I believe she prefers to work with this group, although if she does mind that's her problem
