GTKY - Big travel dreams!

Inspired by my very brave friend who just took her two toddlers to Tokyo (!) I was thinking...

1. If money were no object, what would be your dream trip to take with your family once your kid(s) are old enough?

2. And what is a big trip you'd like to take WITHOUT the kiddo(s) someday!

*Edited to add - photos of beautiful travel destinations ENCOURAGED! :)

With kids, I think a trip to all US national parks would be amazing. That's less of a money issue and more of a time issue.

Without kids, I really want to go to Thailand. We almost made plans to this summer, but ttc life....

Eta: @maureenmce I would love Banff too! Do you know of the Banff film festival? I go to the traveling showing every year and it's amazing! Also, our bffs are honeymooning to Greece in June! Everything they're talking about doing sounds amazing.
  • @morgantu Oh all the national parks is SUCH a great idea! I'd love to do that. Our DD is definitely and outdoors kid so she'd love it. I want to try to take her to Joshua Tree national park this year, (not during the summer though, oh my god it gets so hot.) It's one of my favorite places and the stars at night when you're camping are amazing. I almost always see shooting stars!

I’m copying @morgantu to take the kids to the national parks would be awesome. How old would they need to be before they would enjoy it? Lol I like taking the kids anywhere though because it causes me to explore things they would like that I would not have done otherwise.
Without kids- maybe Ireland or France or Spain or Italy - all places I’ve never been that I would like to go.
  • @maureenmce We spent part of our honeymoon in Oia, on Santorini!

    1) I would take our kids on a huge Eurotrip maybe, or maybe to India. We spent our first year of marriage in Kolkata and have a community of friends in Assam. They would love to see us again.

    2) We’ve been trying to get to Norway/Scandinavia since our honeymoon was cut short 7 years ago! We’re talking about finally taking the trip this summer and leaving the tot with H’s parents.

  • @Activebaby I wonder about the age thing too! I think maybe 4 and up for the whole camping deal? Though I do think my 2 year old would love a romp around a national park right now, so who knows, maybe earlier!

@PensiveCrayon Oh that must've been such a beautiful honeymoon! And India sounds amazing! My mom went a couple years ago and loved it.
  • 1. Hmmm...I know I want to visit all 50 states, so maybe a giant road trip? We could visit all the national monuments, parks, any places DH and I have been to show our kids what we've seen. Otherwise, somewhere in Europe with lots of history, DH loves history so it would be fun!

    2. Definitely France!! I'd like to spend a few days in Paris visiting the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, the Champs-Elysés, etc. And then drive (or take a train or whatever) down to the south of France and spend a few days on the beaches. And visiting a vineyard would definitely be on the list somewhere! This is a "planned" trip in the sense that we want to, and plan to, just don't know when. I'm thinking our ten year anniversary (2025).

    1. With the kids, I totally agree, mh and I have talked many times about renting a big rv and seeing the national parks. Other than that, maybe Ireland, England, and a little of the rest of Europe. I just would’ve loved to have that experience and would be so glad to give my kids that.

    2. I’d love to go back to Hawaii someday. Or, I know mh would love to go on a beer tour of Germany which would be fantastic.

  • @rosebud332 My husband works in the craft beer industry and a beer vacation in Germany would basically be his dream.
  • @rosebud332 oh a beer tour! Sounds fun! Idk how much I'd truly like (as far as beer goes), but I think DH would enjoy it. Now a wine tour of Europe...THAT's something DH and I would both enjoy lol

We’re taking the kids to Italy summer of 2019, wish us luck!

We also just did a trip to Peru sans children (eta: “just” it was January 2018). We spent four days and three nights hiking the Andes to Macchu Picchu. It was the most amazing thing I’ve ever done.

Pie ice in the sky trip with the kids is taking them to Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. I think I’m going to pull rank and tell DH we’re doing it in about 4 years.

Without kids, I’d love to do some hiking in the Alps with DH one day. Idk when our next child-free trip will be.

    1.  I agree with the national parks - how fun that would be!  I would takes kids on a huge road trip with a camper and visit as many as possible,  especially the less popular off-the grid ones.  I went to Big Bend NP in grad school and it was WAY out there but just oh so cool.  It's still one of my favorite places.

    2. I would LOVE take a boat trip up the Amazon River.  My husband and I are both biologists and there is just so so so much cool, mindblowing biology there.  I would die of excitement but also probably tropical parasites and diseases which I would be terrified of the whole time.

I also want to go back to Australia at some point.  We went to Adelaide and Perth in November 2017 for our honeymoon and it was absolutely incredible.  I daydream about it constantly still.  If we went back I would want to go deeper into Western Australia and also spend a bunch of time exploring the Great Barrier Reef.

    Sigh.

  • My husband is from Venezuela, so I know he would love to take the kids there and all around South America. Unfortunately I don’t know when we’d be able to get to Venezuela because of the political situation there, but it’s a nice thought.

Kids free, I’d like to travel around Europe. TBH, we enjoy cruising so I’d love to do one of those cruises around the world, or just fly somewhere then cruise around, get off at a port and stay a while, hop on a plane or another cruise here or there. I’d love that to do that with the kids, but maybe when they’re adults. I want to be able to eat drink and really enjoy, but I’d love for them to experience it all too.

DH really want to take us all back to Kyoto. He’s been, I haven’t. He just adored it there. Thailand is on the top of my list, but I really want to go everywhere.

  • @westcoastfoodie South America is one of my favorite places to travel! I briefly mentioned in the work thread that I did a travel show there and while the crew I traveled with was nuts, the actual places we visited were AMAZING. And we were there for almost three months, so we got to explore multiple countries, which was awesome. I really hope the political situation improves in Venezuela so you can take your whole family there someday!
  • Traveling was never really on my bucket list. But i always wanted to visit the US Virgin Islands. And being a small town country girl, i always wanted to see the northern lights.
  • @AshleyGemini24 I would LOVE to see the Northern Lights. I search instagram for photos of them all the time. So magical!
  • @maureenmce I know, it hurts my heart so much to hear my husband talk about his heritage and how he worries our kids will never know it because he can’t go back since he’s an ex-pat. His dad still lives there and the stories we hear from him are heart breaking.

Working on a travel show sounds AMAZING. I wasn’t really interested in travel until I was an adult (I was a scaredy cat) and now I live by those shows until our next adventure!

  • @AshleyGemini24 apparently Northern Lights can be seen here in Missouri, certain spots up NE and only a small window of time. I haven't seen them, but would also love to!!

  • @westcoastfoodie Oh gosh, that must be heartbreaking! And I hope your husband's dad is okay there! <3 And yes, I watch travel shows constantly too, since I'm too old/have a small child so I can't work on them anymore! So that I did that when I was in my 20's and unattached.
  • 1. If money were no object, what would be your dream trip to take with your family once your kid(s) are old enough? I think a cruise would be fun when spawn (FX) gets near double digits. Until then, kiddo is going to have to learn to love road trips the old fashioned way; no iPads or movies en route, forced to use imagination and look at nature.

    2. And what is a big trip you'd like to take WITHOUT the kiddo(s) someday! Either back to Japan, or back to Ireland. But maybe France! I just got back in touch with an old friend who is now an organic farmer in FR. He invited DH and I to visit anytime, we promised a place to stay and an all-you-can-eat-vegetable buffet

Oh my goodness @echo-charlietango that sounds like heaven!
  • @maureenmce, right?! I just need to remember what village he lives in (but I'll find out soon enough. We got back in touch because he is trying to get some bean seeds that he can only find in USA, but the supplier doesn't ship int'l, so here I am -ready to be the bridge between a man and his beans).

    Hahahaha amazing.
  • When it was just DS, I used to take him everywhere! We did zoo trips, went to Boston, Houston.. he was an excellent flyer! But money has been so tight with DH is school and DD coming that we don't travel too much anymore, unless we can drive there and get great deals on lodgings. I would love to take my kids to Disney - I have never been and it would be so much fun! I'm one of 6, my parents just couldn't swing it. DH is anti-theme parks so I'm not sure it'll happen anytime soon. I'd also like to continue just exploring the country with them. I have a list somewhere of all the places I'd like to visit with my kids.

As for just DH and I.. we continuously talk about repeating our honeymoon. We went to the Rivera Maya and it was so amazing. Gorgeous beaches, amazing weather... I really want to go to Europe tho. Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Italy, Spain.. this was the trip I was supposed to take when I got pregnant with DS and had to postpone. Someday...
