Cord Blood Banking

I know this can be a bit of a controversial topic, but I was wondering who was considering doing Umbilical Cord Blood Banking or donation.

Do any non-FTM have any recommendations for banks to use? What kind of cost is associated?

Were there any issues with the blood draw after labor that FTM should be aware of?

Re: Cord Blood Banking

  • I’m also looking into it.  I know if I do it, I will donate it rather than bank ot privately.

But, like you, I still need to research the process.

I didn't do it with DD and wish that I did.  I will definitely donate it.  I plan on asking my doctor more about it.
  • We opted not to with DS. Private banking was too expensive. And we chose delayed cord clamping, which removes the option of donation.
  • We will also choose to delay cord clamping this time. We weren’t eligible for cord blood banking last time because apparently it isn’t allowed with twins.  If you’re having a planned C-section, you can donate the placenta(s) too. We were able to do that last time.  If I end up with another breech baby and need another section, I’m planning to donate the placenta again.  Unfortunately, vaginal births don’t qualify because the placenta gets contaminated on the way out.

  • I wanted to donate last time, but my hospital doesn't participate. I decided not to bank privately and thought this article was really informative.

  • Can someone share the benefits of donating your cord blood or placenta? I can of course go research myself if no one is able to share.
  • We did delayed clamping with DD and will do it with this baby as well. I looked into donating and the hospital I'll be delivering at doesn't do donation, only private banking.

Cord blood I’m not as clear on because we didn’t do it, but it has to do with stem cells that can be used in medical treatments.  I’ve read that often times they can’t use a persons own cells so besides the price of private banking, it may not be useful anyway (of course, that could be from people trying to get it donated, I haven’t looked into it since we couldn’t do it.

Placenta donations are used to help patients healing from medical procedures, like surgeries, or burn victims.  I’m not sure exactly how it helps, but I know it promotes healing - possibly because of stem cells, but I’m not sure about that.

  • We liked the idea of it in theory, but chose the benefits of delayed cord clamping for both previous pregnancies.

  • @sammierose464 As far as I’m aware, there are no direct benefits of donating for yourself. Just a good deed that could possibly save someone else’s life. If you wanted access to your own cord blood for later use, you’d have to pay for private banking.
  • Thanks! I'm all for donating if it can help someone. Especially if I don't need it anymore!

What at the benefits of delayed clamping?? I'm definitely going to have to look into my options this is really interesting

Something like 1/4 to 1/3 of baby’s blood is in the cord/placenta at birth. Delaying clamping allows time for the blood to leave the placenta and go into baby.  Ideally you’d wait until the cord stops pulsing and goes white.  Sometimes that can take a while, but delaying even a minute or two has benefits over cutting immediately.  We didn’t delay clamping by much with our twins since it was a c-section, but the dr did “milk” the cord before she cut it to at least get the blood from the cord to the babies.

  • Ditto to everything said. We did the delayed cord clamping because the benefit is directly to our son vs cord donation is to others.

    Oh wow! Thank you
  • Cord blood banking was prohibitively expensive. We instead donated it to the national cord registry so it could help others - and possible ourselves if we ever needed the registry.
  • My hospital doesn't allow delayed clamping, which would be my first choice, apparently it's against protocol.

We are also looking at a birthing center which keeps baby attached for 1 to 2 hours after birth, which I would prefer but we have a lot of things to weigh in that decision.

But if we go the hospital route, I'd like to at least donate it, because I know how valuable those cells are and they can save lives.

I feel like everything I've seen for private banking is $70 per month and up, and that doesn't feel worth it, I would rather donate.
  • We used Viacord with my son. It was very simple and easy. However, I think we are going to forgo it this time around. I have heard more and more how advances are being made in using stem cells from fallen baby teeth now even so I feel like paying one annual storage fee is enough for our family.
