Thyroid Issues

I was recently diagnosed with low T3.  I was put on Armour Thryoid and I just had my levels retested yesterday.  My blood work came in and, with help of the medication, all my levels are in normal range.  Does anyone have any experience with thyroid issues? especially during pregnancy?  I have an appointment with my PCP today to go over results, but I haven't seen her since I've found out I was pregnant, so I'm just curious!

Re: Thyroid Issues

  • *waves* I do! I have hashimoto's thyroiditis, which is a thyroid autoimmune disease. I had it with all of my pregnancies. Basically, with thyroid issues, you'll either be tested by your OB or an endocrinologist. My OB prefers her patients with thyroid issues to see an endocrinologist, so I see one before TTC and during pregnancy. Usually they want to test as soon as you're pregnant (which you did and all is well - yay!) and then throughout the first and second trimester. Sometimes if you're steady they won't test in the third, or if they do, only once. If you are just hypothyroid, as long as your levels are being checked as often as they need to be, you will be fine.

With those of us with hashimoto's, there can be more fluctuation (and I also had postpartum thyroiditis after my daughter was born, which has caused long term issues) and I'll have to be tested pretty often, like every 3-4 weeks throughout. But really, all it is is blood tests and, if needed, medication adjustment, so it shouldn't be too scary! Try not to worry about it! :)

  • Interesting! The blood work I had yesterday, she was testing to see if I have any autoimmune issue like Hashimoto's, but from what I can decipher, it doesn't look like it.  I think my body just wasn't converting the T4 to T3 appropriately.  The dose I'm on seems to have me exactly even.  From what I had read, it didn't seem like a huge deal; thanks for confirming!  Just one extra thing to poke you for during pregnancy!  :D

  • @texas_t Oh yeah, it gets really annoying! I've already had two blood draws and will be getting another one (for thyroid) on Tuesday. If I remember right, on my 8 week OB visit when I was pregnant with DD, between the OB's tests, the genetic tests and the thyroid, they drew 8 vials of blood! It's like um, hi, I still need some blood, thank you. Haha.
  • @maureenmce Lol, I remember thinking "How in the world am I going to walk out of here without passing out?" lol

i was hyper for many years and turned hypo after my first pregnancy. Things to keep in mind is that your body and baby will require a higher level during first tri but you catch a small break with second and third tri since baby is already making its own. So they more than likely test you more often early on. My dosage increased from 25 to 125 during pregnancy and then back down postpartum. If you are suspected to have Graves’ disease (like me) they may also test you during second tri to check antibodies. If positive they would have to test baby after birth. I have been tested almost every month since 10 wks and I’ll only be tested once between 20 wks and delivery. Blood work is annoying but thyroid issues can usually be managed pretty well during pregnancy. Best of luck!
  • Hashi’s here! Got blood work done as soon as I got the bfp. Waiting on results and to see my doc at the end of the month.
  • Thank y'all so much for your feedback.  I received my blood work back Friday and went over them with my PCP.  With meds, my thyroid looks to be functioning with numbers right down the middle.  My antibodies came back fine, so we don't really know the reason why my T3 was low, it just was.  She's on the fence having me continue the meds because she doesn't want me to take something I don't necessarily need while I'm pregnant, but she doesn't want to take me off of them because she doesn't want my function low while pregnant.   Long story short, she's referred me to an endocrinologist.  The problem is, it will take roughly 3 months to get in somewhere, so I think I'm going to keep taking the meds and lob this to my OB on the 23rd.  Id on't think my levels will get detrimentally high in 3 weeks seeing that I've been taking them for a month and they're normal.  My assumption is he'll order a full thyroid panel with my other blood work.

Just wanted to second what @wildtot said.  I have thyroid issues also that were diagnosed after the birth of my son and so far everything has been just fine with this pregnancy.  I have had to have it checked regularly (so far once a trimester has worked for me since things have been good) and I have continued taking the medication I was on pre pregnancy (Synthroid).  Good luck!

  • @texas_t So glad you got a referral to an endocrinologist, just to be safe. Based on what my endocrinologist has told me, your thyroid needs can go up during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester, so it's good they're leaving you on the medication for now, pending endocrinologist approval. But luckily, it sounds like you're dealing with a minor fluctuation and not an autoimmune disease or anything too serious! Yay! :)
  • @maureenmce Thank you! I was relieved to find out it wasn't autoimmune and was happy with the fact my PCP said "I don't know what I'm doing here, so I'm lobbing it to someone else!"  I appreciate her honesty!  I'm sure all will be fine! I think I've felt a noticeable (good) difference since starting the meds, so I'd hate to stop them if I don't need to!

  • @texas_t Glad you're feeling good on the meds! If it's a low dose, I am almost 100% certain they will keep you on it. If not throughout the whole pregnancy, at least throughout the first and probably second tri. Doctors like to keep everything as stable/the same as possible during pregnancy, especially with thyroid, which can fluctuate during. :)
  • Hey girls

I used to have normal hormone levels but in my first blood work during pregnancy (at 4 weeks) my TSH was a bit elevated (T4 normal). My OB prescribed a small dose of Synthoid but I was concerned (first time mom, hehe)  and decided to look for an endocrinologist. He had a look at my exams and said I probably have nothing to worry, but asked me some extra tests, just to make sure. He said that even if I need to take the drug during pregnancy, it’s super safe for the baby. And he also said that it I feel the urge to google, I should always look for information at the American Thyroid Association website cause it’s a reliable source :)

  • @mhobbes Yes, don't worry at all! Thyroid medication is *very* safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding!

    @texas_t Yay for endo referral!
  • First blood work down and I turned hyper from long-standing hypo in just 4 weeks of pregnancy! Endo lowered my dose so we’ll see how it changes in 4 weeks.
  • Hi everyone! I have Hashimoto's.  My doctor didn't want to test again because we had just done it 2 months ago.  But, I insisted and I'm glad I did.

2 months ago TSH was at 1.56 and at just 4 1/2 weeks,  it jumped to 6.0. We increased my Synthroid to help support the demand on my thyroid.

In that time,  I gained 5 pounds and found myself air thirsty.  Just in case, that helps you decide. Test early, test often.  Your thyroid controls so many hormones.

The medication is already helping. ♡
