High Risk Pregnancy Check-In w/o 3/27

I haven't seen one of these started yet. I know it's listed as a Tuesday topic... but I'm meeting with a MFM doctor for the first time this afternoon and I'm anxious.

How far along are you?

Why are you considered High Risk?

Any questions or comments:

  • How far along are you?
    About 7 weeks.

Why are you considered High Risk?
I'm type 2 diabetic, overweight, AND I've had a preterm delivery.

    Any questions or comments:
I'm meeting with a MFM doctor for the first time this afternoon (after I have my first ultrasound). I was type 2 diabetic with DS, but I just saw my OB plus an endo. I'm wondering if the MFM will take the place of the endo? I hope so... all these co-pays add up fast.

I'm wondering how other mama's, who know they are high risk from the start, are doing so far?

Why are you considered High Risk? History of preterm delivery, arcuate (heart-shaped) uterus

Any questions or comments: I'm also going for a second VBAC which isn't alone a high risk condition, but will involve special monitoring during labor.

Can't decide if I want to do progesterone shots or not. I did them with my last pregnancy and went to 39 weeks, but they're so expensive!

Why are you considered High Risk? I've had a DVT (blood clot) before, so I've been giving myself blood thinner injections since we started trying to conceive.

Any questions or comments: Feeling anxious because I've had a CP back in January, but great bloodwork results are helping me to stay calm this time around and so far, so good. Since we conceived via an IUI, we have our scan next Wednesday with our RE when I'll be 6w1d. Can't wait to see that little one... :)
  • @KellyT22 what were you having to pay for progesterone shots? I've been told I'll have to start them shortly into 2nd trimester because DS was born at 29wks. Also, I've heard they hurt :(

Why are you considered High Risk? two preterm labors

Any questions or comments: still can’t decide if I want to do the shots. I seem to have all the negative side effects of everything. I already am so sick and not sure I’ll be able to survive work with any more sickness.

  • @middleschoolmommy I think it was a little over $400 a month. Eventually we hit our out of pocket max, but with that pregnancy I was in two different years so I had to pay the max twice :(  I don't think they hurt at all! They give them to you in your upper butt which is the least painful area to get shots in my opinion.

I don't think I had a ton of side effects....hot flashes after get the shots and did struggle with maintaining steady blood sugar.  My preemie was a pretty healthy 35 weeker and I had one full  term baby after which is why I consider not doing them.

So glad for this forum. Seems like everyone references shots and you've got me wondering if I'll have to take them. Thanks from this excited FTM!

Why are you considered high risk?
My son was born at 29 weeks

I'm also nervous about the shots. I'll start them in 10 weeks

Why are you considered high risk?
type 1 diabetic (25 years!) treated by insulin pump. I was induced at 37.5, 35.5 and 36.5 weeks with my first three.

Each one was born with more complications, 1st was only a little jaundiced, 2nd was a 9.5 lb “premie” who was born all bruised because of his size (proportioned differently than a 9.5 lb full term babe I was told), had a full shoulder distocia and was severely jaundiced, 3rd was born flat, had to be intubated and taken to nicu, then was diagnosed with erbs palsy, a nerve injury resulting in no movement in her L arm at birth. She now has full movement but decreased strength, extension and range of motion, she just had surgery this last summer! It was due to my body responding too quickly to bring induced and she was born too fast. I was only dialated to 7cm when she came out, dr wasn’t in the room yet, resident somehow yanked her head/neck, and that was the cause of the injury.

Also 36 years old, so I guess I’m AMA, with a history of one loss last year.

Any questions or comments? Reading comments above, feeling SO thankful for Canadian healthcare, and like I shouldn’t complain so much about my medication costs!
  • @prairiemomma82 so sorry to hear of your complications with your other babies' births. When I read a 9.5 lb premie, my eyes bugged out of my head!  Definitely be grateful for Canadian health care, I've got what's considered a decent insurance plan here and we still have a $3k deductible (pay 100% out of pocket before insurance kicks in), and a $6k annual maximum. My employer does pay for $1,500 of the deductible, but still - that's a lot out of pocket. This year, since we were in fertility treatment, we hit the annual $3k deductible in mid-January...
  • @ginny_203 that’s so crazy!!!! I have a $2000 deductible for my medication before the provincial plan kicks in, but we have insurance to cover some of that until we reach it. Between my hi-risk ob-gyn, endo, regular fetal assessments in 2nd and 3rd tri, and ophthalmologist, I don’t know how we could do it!

Btw, that 9.5 lbs preemie is now a healthy, 145 lb 11 year old football player with men’s size 10 feet! He says “momma, when I was born and was SOOOO BIG, you didn’t know that body was made for football!”
  • @prairiemomma82 that's sooo sweet! He was definitely born to be a football player! <3

  • How far along are you?

    To be determined  :|:|
Why are you considered High Risk?
History of loss, preterm labor (32 weeks), AMA, IUGR with my third

I don't normally see my MFM until 2nd tri for monitoring. I did the shots with my third and the pain wasn't too bad. I had mild soreness on the side. If I make it that far, I'll probably save muddle the weekly office visits and just do it myself.

Why are you considered High Risk?
I had ICP in my previous pregnancy that lasted longer than the first tri. I had a preterm delivery, preterm labor, and recurrent losses.

    Any questions or comments:
My Dr expects my ICP to hit again early in the second tri, so it will be long pregnancy of wondering if my liver enzymes can hold out to get baby to at least 30 weeks.

Why are you considered High Risk?
Mechanical mitral valve which means I need to take blood thinners.  I have just switched from warfarin (coumarin) to clexane (lovenox) which needs to be injected twice daily.

Any questions or comments: Feeling grateful for the NZ healthcare system!  Also, obviously it would be great it everyone could have a totally smooth, risk free pregnancy, but it's nice to know others out there dealing with health stuff that puts them in the high risk category.
  • @ginny_203 are you taking clexane/lovenox too?  How are you finding it?  You're probably a pro by now!  I have been doing twice daily injections for about a week now, my stomach looks great...
  • @stitchnz yes, I'm doing one a day lovenox injections and will be until about 3 months postpartum if all goes well. Before we got pregnant we were seeing a reproductive endocrinologist for fertility help, so I've been on them since November. I am a seasoned vet now, but it's still not my favorite part of the day! ;)
