Ask a Second-Time Mom: Week of 3/26

Apparently this is a thing birth month boards do now? Bring it on, friends. You've got burning questions (about what to expect from pregnancy, doctors visits, childbirth, motherhood, the works), those of us who have been there done that (maybe) have answers (possibly even correct ones!).

Re: Ask a Second-Time Mom: Week of 3/26

  • I know everyone is different, but when did nausea start/stop for you in your previous pregnancies?  I'm already not feeling great and am looking for a light at the end of the tunnel.

You won't like my answer.  Mine started the first day of my second trimester and stopped at 34 weeks. Honestly, It was rough ! I'm hoping it's different this time.

  • @kadeephd I'll make you feel better! Mine started at 5 weeks and ended at week 10! I never threw up, but was just SUPER gaggy. I had major food aversions until my 3rd trimester, though!

I don’t remember exactly when it started, but maybe ~6-8 weeks. It ended not to long into my second trimester.
  • @GoyaBean913 oh my gosh! I was hoping for an end before the second trimester.  I didn't know it could start then!  I hope it's not like that for you (or me, or anyone) this time.

@texas_t That sounds doable.  I'm going to hope for a week 10 end!  Only six more weeks...

  • I never had any so it's definitely possible to skip that symptom if you're lucky.

  • @mara005 Ooh, you are lucky! Let's hope you are lucky again this pregnancy!

@kadeephd As for me, when I was pregnant with my daughter morning sickness started on the first day of week 6 (I remember vividly) and it stopped around week 14. It was pretty awful - weirdly I never threw up in the first tri, but I *always* felt like I was going to, and I had terrible food aversions, so I could barely eat. Funnily enough, I did throw up in second and third tri, but not from nausea, but from coughing fits that would somehow trigger my gag reflex, and from terrible heartburn in the third tri. Like, my heartburn was so bad, for example, that I didn't realize that iced tea triggered it until I had one sip (one sip!) and threw up everywhere. So...yeah. But the first tri nausea was still the worst and it was definitely done by week 14.
  • Same as mara005. No morning sickness. For what it's worth, I believe I really somewhere that MS is a symptom that does seem to follow patterns across generations; if your mom/grandmas were lucky enough to avoid it, you're more likely to avoid it, too.
  • Mine started around week five and tapered off by the 2nd trimester.

  • Mine started around 5 or 6 weeks. Went away around 11/12. But I only threw up once. And it was mostly due to a migraine.
  • I followed the textbook. Started ramping up around week 7 (5 and 6 I just felt weird sometimes), peaked at Week 10, gone by 13, except for one day during week 15.
  • Thanks for sharing your experiences, everyone.  I know my mom never had morning sickness so I was hoping I'd escape it too, but it looks like I'm not so lucky.

@maureenmce That sounds horrible!  Being pregnant can be scary/stressful/painful.

Mine starts around 8-9w and lasts til 15w or so. Last pregnancy it returned in the last few weeks before delivery.
  • @kadeephd I realized I after I wrote my response that I might have scared some of the first time mamas with my oversharing, haha. There is a huge variation in symptoms, so it might be so much less intense than mine (and mine was less intense than things were for other mamas!) It's really just a roll of the dice.
  • No real MS for #1 either, just the on and off feeling of slight nausea that really only lasted a few weeks, maybe around week 6 or 8? @AGK2015 interesting theory. My mom wasn't really sick with my sister or me either!

Same here .honestly, my whole pregnancy was rough in general. It was a horror show every step of the way. But most people I know hadn't gone through the extremes that I did so take it with a grain of salt. I'm a little nervous that I'll go through the same again but reading all these posts is encouraging!

  • I’m wondering if any of you had pretty intense lower back pain? I’m five weeks and one day as of today and woke up with some legit lower back discomfort. When i stood in front of the mirror it looked like my left hip bone was a bit higher than my right. I have no pain in the front or spotting or anything, but the discomfort is not pleasant.
  • @rlbradford1sttimer yup. Whole pregnancy, starting first tri. And I’ve got it now too. Later on it was because of how the baby was lying, at this point i think it’s a combo of relaxin and round ligament pain. I got a pregnancy back support pillow and it makes a world of difference.
  • @celette482 thank you! That makes me feel better. I’ll look into one of those pillows!
  • @rlbradford1sttimer I had a lot of pain as well, from what I understand it’s a pretty common symptom. I second the pillow! It really helped throughout my previous pregnancies.

  • @rlbradford1sttimer I had terrible back and hip pain with #2. I used a support band that I wore around my hips and under my belly for most of the pregnancy and it made a huge difference! Also, slept with about 3 extra pillows - keeping everything level while sleeping helps so much!

  • Support band helped, a pillow between my knees when I was on my side helped, and the occasional hot pad behind me while I was sitting. Super normal, but sorry you're dealing with it already!
  • I had horrible back pain from the 2nd trimester until the end. Mine wasn’t really lower, but it was just above my lower back and just to the left of my spine. I tried everything, chiropractor, heating pad, pregnancy pillow. I didn’t have any luck though :( went away as soon as I gave birth

  • @rlbradford1sttimer the low back pain can be a killer! There are a lot of stretching exercises you can do for it with a balance ball, that helped me a lot my first text me around. Google it and you’ll see what I mean

  • Thank you, everyone. I feel much better now- heating pad has been a life saver.
  • @rlbradford1sttimer Definitely sounds like the relaxin. Mine had been hurting off and on. Tylenol helps if you aren't opposed to it

  • I had it in early pregnancy, but I had really bad back pain in my 3rd trimester. It felt like I needed to pop something in my back. I found a chiropractor that specializes in pregnancy and it seemed to help. So there's always that if you're not opposed to it and your doc gives you the go ahead. Or even just a massage... which sounds so lovely right about now.

I totally forgot about the back/belly support band, that helped a lot too!
