NGPR: How to mention job posting to boss? (kinda long)

Hi ladies. Try to follow me....

I have been with company since 11/2004 but transferred to their Atlanta region in 10/2008 (so fairly new position I am in now). I just saw a GREAT posting that I would LOVE to apply to and is exactly the direction I am looking to go in. This new position would not report to my current boss. Code of ethics is to mention my interest to boss before inquiring. I have a few ideas of my own about how to mention it to him but what are your ideas?

 Thanks.

  • I would just tell him, "I found this new position I'm very interested in, I just wanted to let you know that I am thinking about applying for it."  No need to add any fluff just tell him straight up.

  • Tell him that you are always keeping an eye out for new opportunities.  Tell him about the position that you saw and ask him if he thinks you would be a good candidate (you'll probably need his recommendation, anyway).  Ask him for advice about moving forward and what he knows about that department, etc.

  • Thanks ladies. I was thinking about the direct approach since that is just my personality... no fluff but I feel like sometimes it gets me in trouble. Right now, during this economy, I am so glad to have a job period that i am worried to even think about switching jobs.
