Who is still working out?

I’m 38 weeks tomorrow, and the last thing I want to do today is go to the gym. But it’s snowing outside, I have an active toddler, and the gym has daycare. I feel like at this point half the workout is just getting her into her car seat and then from the parking lot to the daycare room. So many stairs.

Motivate me. What are you still doing fitness wise?

Re: Who is still working out?

  • You got this!  Even if you drop her off at the gym daycare and go stare at the equipment you are doing something good for her.

I am still working out.  It's a very modified workout, but it's definitely helped me curb the swelling that I have had in my last pregnancies.  I do 30 minutes on the bike and then some light machine workout for my arms and legs.  Yesterday, I incorporated some stretching and squats that I read help to relax your body for labor.  I honestly still feel really good and I think that's the working out. One of these days I am hoping my water breaks there, because I have every intention of continuing until delivery.

I am also wondering if my working out will have a positive impact on labor and delivery,  particularly pushing.  Pushing is no joke and always wore me out even when I knew what to do.
  • My favorite yoga video on YouTube right now - it's short, fun, and feels fantastic.  I also enjoy that I don't have to leave the house:

  • @DDRRT1982 It's so hard to know! I worked out my first pregnancy all the way up until my water broke (thankfully at home). When DD1's heart rate dropped off the monitor and they had to reposition me on all 4's, they were very impressed with my agility...ha! I say agility jokingly. More like beached whale turning over in the bed and hurling myself up.
  • I'm still doing light cardio every day- either walking or elliptical. I get anxious if I don't get my heart rate a little bit up at least once a day.

@antoto thanks for the video rec! May try that this evening (if my dog doesn't tackle me in the process).
  • @gh515 LOL my dogs totally fight me for the mat.  They LOVE laying on it.
  • Still working out. I'm 39 weeks and went to cardio dance class yesterday. Definitely not dancing full out, but still moving around. I'm doing it to prepare for the marathon -aka birth. I also went to a cycling class last weekend, but I think I'm done now. Just walking and bouncing on my birth ball.

I think the exercise has made my pregnancy easier. Listen to your body and keep moving if it feels good.

  • I've been doing Pure Barre a few times a week (when my schedule allows). It's definitely getting harder to stay motivated, but I've read that working out through pregnancy makes for an easier labor and delivery so that's what I keep telling myself. I'll do whatever I can to help that process out!

I should add that I modify a LOT these days. I have diastasis recti (separation of my abdominal muscles), so that limits me in what I can do. I figure even a really modified workout is better than nothing though.
  • @stlbuckeye132 Did you have diastasis prior to this pregnancy?  Can you tell if you have it during pregnancy if you didn't have it before?  I'm so anxious about this.  I'm avoiding a lot of specific movements in hopes that I won't get it.
  • @antoto no. My doctor mentioned fairly early on (like 18ish weeks maybe?) that she could feel my abs starting to separate a little bit. I was really surprised because I didn't even have a bump then. I couldn't feel anything at that point, but I can definitely feel it now and I'll see them "cone" if I do something I shouldn't be doing. It sucks. I think most women who get it don't get it until after delivery, but I guess I'm one of the lucky ones.
  •  You ladies make me feel terrible. I haven't worked out since like 20 weeks lol. I'm proud of you all though! I'm sure it will make the bounce back easier for you.
  • I'm going to prenatal yoga class weekly, and it is definitely a workout. I do some of the same positions plus birth ball and spinning babies movements at home a few times a week as well. I want to be strong for l&d and recovery.
I really miss my pre-pg workouts alternating weights and cardio, but just can't hack it now. So I'm trying not to lose too much before I can get back into it. We'll see how that goes. :D

@sarahhedger7 While I think keeping up exercise while pregnant helps postpartum, I don’t think it’s a requirement to bounce back! I had excruciating back pain post partum, and it took me a year to lose the baby weight. I have friends that don’t workout that were wearing their pre-preg clothes at three months!

    Same!!
  • @sarahhedger7 and @baybeesunflower, I just came here to see if it was only me. Glad not just me! ;)
  • I'm 37 weeks and am swimming laps. It has helped my swelling a ton!
