Poll on when to give notice of leaving a job...

This is a selfish poll, but I am playing devil's advocate.

DH is being transfered, we know we will be moving at the end of March/early April. We should get a signed offer letter this week.

Do I....

Tell them now that I am leaving at the end of March? (2 months notice)?

Wait and tell them in a month?

Drawbacks:

They could tell me to leave before March, then I am screwed insurance wise, but I could pay cobra.

Bonuses:

I give them lots of time to find a replacement, get to network because everyone knows I a leaving, don't have them assign me to projects that I know I am not going to be around for. Plus it is less shady.?

HR here is usually VERY slow.

Discuss. ?

  • If they respect their employees at all, they will appreciate you giving them this much notice but keep you as long as possible. I would wait until you get the letter from Houston tho so you know exactly when.

  • Once you have the signed offer letter in your hand I don't see why you can't let them know you will be leaving and such and such is your last date.
  • I would tell them asap! This way they have extra time to hire a replacement! If they are respectable they wont let you go for being courteous! GL!
  • Hey Buddy!

That's a tough one, I definetly thing you should wait until you get the official letter from Houston.  You need to decide what you are going to do about IVF too!

  • I agree with the pp - give notice as soon as you get your official transfer date.

My H and I got engaged after he'd already moved to MN, so my former workplace knew like 9 months before I moved that I'd be moving. I gave my "official" written notice two weeks before my last day, but they started looking for my replacement about a month before my last day.

  • Plus, I would hate knowing we were going to leave and keeping a secret for a month just to only give them 4 weeks notice. Then they ask me...um when did you know...um over a month ago?

    Shady. ?

  • Of course I would not say anything until we get an offer letter. Not quiting my job on a wink and a hand shake.?
  • I was in this exact position in April of last year - so I gave them 4 weeks notice and I'm glad I did because they ended up "forgetting" to schedule me my last 1.5 weeks there!?

  • This same thing happened to me. Once I was absolutely sure I was leaving (2 months prior), I told them. I had no reason to think that they'd force me to leave early (other than paranoia!). I got to help train my replacement, which not only helped out my department, but also gave me something to do for the last few weeks of work. GL!
  • i would wait awhile..especially in this economy you never know what could happen. maybe that think- oh she's leaving anyway, we might as well let her go now. or whatever. or maybe not- but you never know. plus, cobra is a buttload of money- believe me, i'm paying it now and it sucks. i'd wait at least a month to six weeks, but that's just me.
  • p.s. i don't really think waiting to tell them is shady. you have to look out for you and dh. you really never know what can happen.
  • I would wait until you get the letter, but I'd hope your employer would appreciate the notice. At my last job, I gave notice in the beginning of December with the intention of staying through the end of the month. They told me no one would be around the last week of the month and that I'll stay for three weeks. What they neglected to tell me was that the last week of the month would be out of my vacation time and I still got paid. That said, my intent was to get paid and then get my vacation paid back. No big deal, but it would've been nice if that was explained upfront.?

I get what you are saying. I guess it just makes my feel bad. We have a tiny team. I know there is no way they would let me leave before March. There are 12 events between now and then and I am in charge of 5 of them. I also know that HR is slow here and I know they will keep me busy until I leave. They may not even find a replacement for me before I go.?

The economy is something to consider, for sure, but I also don't think that is how my company rolls. I have been here for 5 years. I could always be proven wrong though. ?

  • You know the climate at your job better than anyone.  If you have reason to believe that they would use your leaving as an excuse to let you go earlier, then wait, but otherwise, let them know as soon as you're sure you're leaving.

     Good luck!

  • I missed the part about the transfer being definite...but I still think upfront is the way to go!
  • I'd probably wait a little while longer. A month's notice is still fair and gives time to help find a replacement.
