This is a selfish poll, but I am playing devil's advocate.
DH is being transfered, we know we will be moving at the end of March/early April. We should get a signed offer letter this week.
Do I....
Tell them now that I am leaving at the end of March? (2 months notice)?
Wait and tell them in a month?
Drawbacks:
They could tell me to leave before March, then I am screwed insurance wise, but I could pay cobra.
Bonuses:
I give them lots of time to find a replacement, get to network because everyone knows I a leaving, don't have them assign me to projects that I know I am not going to be around for. Plus it is less shady.?
HR here is usually VERY slow.
Discuss. ?
Re: Poll on when to give notice of leaving a job...
Hey Buddy!
That's a tough one, I definetly thing you should wait until you get the official letter from Houston. You need to decide what you are going to do about IVF too!
I agree with the pp - give notice as soon as you get your official transfer date.
My H and I got engaged after he'd already moved to MN, so my former workplace knew like 9 months before I moved that I'd be moving. I gave my "official" written notice two weeks before my last day, but they started looking for my replacement about a month before my last day.
Plus, I would hate knowing we were going to leave and keeping a secret for a month just to only give them 4 weeks notice. Then they ask me...um when did you know...um over a month ago?
Shady. ?
I get what you are saying. I guess it just makes my feel bad. We have a tiny team. I know there is no way they would let me leave before March. There are 12 events between now and then and I am in charge of 5 of them. I also know that HR is slow here and I know they will keep me busy until I leave. They may not even find a replacement for me before I go.?
The economy is something to consider, for sure, but I also don't think that is how my company rolls. I have been here for 5 years. I could always be proven wrong though. ?
You know the climate at your job better than anyone. If you have reason to believe that they would use your leaving as an excuse to let you go earlier, then wait, but otherwise, let them know as soon as you're sure you're leaving.
Good luck!
