I’m a pregnant bridesmaid! Twice!

Ladies, I am 7w2d with my first, and LONG awaited, pregnancy. This is an IVF pregnancy so I already had my first scan and baby’s heartbeat was strong! Here is my challenge: I am a bridesmaid in two weddings this June, I’ll be 18 weeks for one and 22 weeks for the other. Both dresses have already been bought in my normal size 4, neither come in maternity sizes. I don’t want to go in to get fitted until I am done with my first trimester which will be around mid-April. Do you have any suggestions as to how I go about estimating my size so far in advance? How long does a seamstress usually need for a BM dress?

  • @bcreeden First off, congrats! I have an IVF baby too and I know how exciting that is! Second, if you use the search function, there was already a thread on here a few weeks ago with some great advice about ordering dresses when pregnant.

  • I'm a Matron of Honor in September, but haven't ordered my dress yet so I may not be much help!  But if you use the search function, someone posted about this topic.

Unless they're both very forgiving flowy/empire waist styles I would call and see if maybe you can cancel your order and order the dresses in a 6. You can have them fitted from there, so you don't have to worry about if there will be enough fabric to let them out.

  • I'm in a wedding shortly before my EDD and I just ordered the dress two sizes bigger.
  • I agree with @DunkinDecaf Call and ask if you can order it in a larger size. It's better to have too much fabric than not enough to work with. Also, as a first timer, it's likely that the bump won't be very large at 18 and 22 weeks, if that helps.

  • Hopefully you will be fine. I    was a bridesmaid when I    was 16w pregnant and was still able to wear the dress unaltered. I    think I    had to have the top more fitted.

  • I'm in the same boat. I will be 20 weeks for my best friend's wedding and I already received my $300 size zero dress!! My mom is a seamstress so I have some advice on the alterations. The dresses are usually SUPER long to account for different heights and heels. My dress has a seem right under my bust line (thankfully the top is loose and will fit my new giant boobies!). I'm having my mom take the seem out from under my bust, and bringing the dress up at the bust line to shorten  (instead of hemming from the bottom). The dress has a slight A line to it so when i pull it up from the top, it will give me a little more wiggle room in my belly area while keeping the pretty bottom of the dress in tact.

Not sure what type of dress you have, but hopefully you can do the same and it will save you some of the stress!

I recommend asking the alterations people at the places where you will be ordering the BM dresses for their recommendation on sizing.

I am in the same situation. I’m MOH in a wedding next month and MOH in a wedding at the end of June.

I ordered my dress for the April wedding two sizes too big and it’s huge. I will need to have it taken in at some point but am not sure how long to wait to make sure it’s a good fit with alterations. (Not to hikack this post, but when would you ladies recommend getting alterations on this dress? I’ll be a couple days shy of 16 weeks and my understanding is I may not start showing my bump until 13-16 weeks!).

The alterations lady at the other store where I ordered the dress for the June wedding recommended that I order it 3 sizes too big and they will alter it close to the wedding. Fingers crossed that works out. This dress is not nearly as flexible and I’ll be a few days shy of 27 weeks for that wedding.

Also, neither brides know yet! DH and I are still keeping it a secret and I’m about to burst! I can’t wait to tell them!!!

  • @ladyofarlington I recommend talking to the person who will be doing the alterations. I do alterations and it depends so much on the dress/style/fabric as well as what they have to work with in the seams that are there. Sometimes you can get a couple of sizes just from letting things out (or taking them up as @babyptobe mentioned) and some dresses have absolutely nothing extra to work with.

Sorry, not very helpful...but at least you have had a conversation with that person already so you know where to go! :)

@knottieamusements I would talk to the seamstress and find out what the minimum amount of time needed is. Last time at 16 weeks I wasn’t showing at all.

Hey this happened to me too! Ordered my BM dress in my normal size last November for a July wedding. Now I'm unexpectedly pregnant and will be 25 weeks at her wedding! The bridal shop consultant had mentioned when we bought the dresses that they can always order extra fabric just in case (lol, laughed at that one back then). I ended up calling the bridal shop and getting extra 1.5 yds of the liner and chiffon for about $110 total ($$$, I know). Unfortunately it was too late to just go up 2 sizes since they were already being made.

Edit: my dress is empire waist so that helps with the alterability!
