I've seen a lot of discussion lately on diapering whether it's favorite disposable brands or how to with cloth diapering so I figured this would be a good one for this week.

Favorite diaper, brand and/or cloth or disposable: when using disposables I have always used pampers swaddlers. When using cloth my favorite HANDS DOWN were bum genius 4.0s

Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): The upfront cost for cloth is relatively high but I bought a diaper here and there at a time while building up to it and it never really bothered me. Once your "stash" is all set you don't have to worry about buying more at all. The only time we used disposables while cloth diapering was when DS had diarrhea because it just wasn't fun to clean out of cloth.
What you like about it: I felt better when using cloth because I was throwing way less into the trash. Also it was really easy to do once you had a system set up.
What you don't like about it, if anything: My ex inlaws refused to use cloth so I was only able to do so when DS was at home or under mine or DH's supervision, so basically nights and weekends as the inlaws were our "daycare". It got to be a pain doing both disposables for them and cloth for us so I eventually gave up.
Is there a diapering option you don't have but are considering? Why?: I've tried both and there are definite pros to both.
Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: I HATED the all in one diapers and the cheap alva ones on Amazon, they just didn't work for us.
Additional thoughts on diapers?: Do what feels right for you. I will be using disposable this time around because my life situation just doesn't accommodate cloth this time around but I absolutely loved it when it was possible for me.

Favorite diaper, brand and/or cloth or disposable: We use disposable. My preference is Pampers Swaddlers by day, Pampers Baby Dry by night. Huggies worked okay for us too.

What you like about it: The line that indicates if the diaper is wet is a MUST have. I hated any diapers (Luvs) that didn't have that line.
What you don't like about it, if anything: We had a little trouble with Huggies leaking, but I think that was more because we needed to size up than due to the diaper. No trouble with Pampers at all.
Is there a diapering option you don't have but are considering? Why?:
Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Luvs - no wet/dry line! So annoying.
Additional thoughts on diapers?: I legitimately don't understand how working moms can cloth diaper. I can't even fathom the extra burden. Totally not worth it to me, but I'm also not very "green" (FFMC, I suppose).

Favorite diaper, brand and/or cloth or disposable: Honest company. We are on a subscription plan so I just go in and update the new size or prints whenever I need to.

What you like about it: I love the subscription service. They have it pretty much down to a science with how many diapers are in a pack / how many packs they ship you every 4 weeks. You can change the frequency if you need to, there were a few times we had to run out for a pack to bridge the gap. The diapers are perfect for my little eczema-prone guy, his skin is so sensitive he breaks out in hives from all sorts of things. The prints are really cute too and thy have fun ones for 4th of July and Winter, stuff like that. And the wipes. Oooooh the wipes. They're the best. Big, absorbent and super soft.
What you don't like about it, if anything: They are expensive but worth it IMHO
Is there a diapering option you don't have but are considering? Why?:
Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Luvs - they were so thin and didn't hold up to my rough-and-tumble toddler.
Additional thoughts on diapers?: Be prepared to switch brands, possibly a few times. Some diapers fit babies differently like if your baby has a rounder tummy or bigger thighs. If you're having lots of blow outs and leaks try sizing up or try a different brand. So my biggest advice is to not stock up too early because your brand of choice might not work. Find a brand that works for the size you're in (once you get to about a size 2, they're in nb and 1s for like a second) then stock up.

They are so cute, and so much better for the environment overall, but the laundry was really hard for me while recovering from my C-section and I just wasn't able to do it.Additional thoughts on diapers?: I prefer the Huggies sensitive wipes to pampers because they didn't feel slimy or like they have a bunch of other stuff in them. And we have the Dekor diaper pale which works really well for us! And it comes in lost of cute colors.

Exactly what @mrsbubbles-2 said about Honest diapers. I love the bundle subscription! The cute prints are awesome, and now you're able to do multiple packs of overnights in place of packs of diapers if need be. Their wipes are amazing, overnights are great, and I'm really liking their training pants now too! DS just potty trained, and I was going to cancel my subscription, but then I saw that I could do training pants in a bundle, so I'm doing 2 packs of overnight diapers and 4 packs of training pants, at least for the next couple of months.

Is there a diapering option you don't have but are considering? Why?: I've always been curious about cloth, and those I know who do it LOVE it, but it's just so much laundry. I don't want to commit because of that. Partly because our laundry room is downstairs in our garage, instead of being in our house. If it was near the bedrooms or living room, I probably would be more willing lol. Those little cloth diaper butts are SO cute.
Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Luvs! They smell so damn gross. I can't handle it.

I'd say they are $$ - $$$; I use Amazon subscribe and save to get 20% off and wait to stack with coupons, etc. they offer.
What you like about it:
These all work for my son. They are soft, non-irratating to him, and have only had one blowout in his 17 months of using diapers.
What you don't like about it, if anything:
I learned to size up on the Pampers Baby Dry at night when/if baby drinks a lot of starts leaking after a whole nights rest (10+ hours)
Is there a diapering option you don't have but are considering? Why?:
I've heard good things about Cosco diapers, but we don't have membership, so we've never tried them.
Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?:
Luvs and Huggies. We were gifted these and we had so many leaks with both. We ended up donating these to a diaper bank for those that do like them.
Additional thoughts on diapers?:
Not all diapers and wipes are the same. What works for your BFF may not work for you or your baby.

I think at different ages/stages different diapers have worked best. I used Honest when DS was a newborn but then I felt they ran a little snug for my little chub. I also liked Pampers Swaddlers for the newborn stage.

Once we got to walking/moving around I used either Pampers Cruisers or Huggies Lil' Movers during the day. Night time diapers are crucial (I had no clue as a FTM)! Little man was STTN and then waking up because he was leaking out of diapers. They also make these amazing spoozie things for when he was even peeing out of a 12 hour night time diaper. It's like a pad to give the diaper extra absorbancy.

Daycare provides diapers so he also uses whatever they provide (changes) and it all works fine.

ETA: I do not understand the mythical science that is stocking up on diapers. You will think a size fits fine one day and the next day you'll be like....no, no I cannot handle another blowout, these are two small and I need to size up RIGHT NOW. I have diapers in every size left from Kid1.

I idolize people who cloth diaper. It was a goal of mine that I gave up on when daycare didn't do it. And now with 2 in diapers I don't think I have the energy. But I still envy you.

Ditto what you said! Except I’m gonna try to continue cloth with #3. I love our bum genius 4.0 s and whenever I tried any other brand I hated them and ended up giving them away/throwing them away.

I use pampers in the newborn phase. My kids are usually long and lean so they don’t fit the cloth till 16ish pounds. And with how much they poop and pee in the beginning I don’t care to buy a separate stash of newborn cloth.

Favorite diaper, brand and/or cloth or disposable: We mostly use Best Bottoms, which is a two in one cloth diaper system. We also have a mixture of pocket diapers and prefolds. We use disposables overnight, and we prefer Pamper's Swaddlers

Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): Best Bottoms are a bit more expensive, but they are very durable. Poop really doesn't leak out of them.
What you like about it: Very cute, 2 in ones are a slimmer fit and you don't need as many covers as you do inserts, so it doesn't take up as much space.
What you don't like about it, if anything: We have had some pee leaking problems since DS has gotten older. He holds his pee and then floods his diaper.
Is there a diapering option you don't have but are considering? Why?: I was to get more pocket diapers because you can double stuff them to hold more pee. Even now we use those for naps. It also keeps the moisture from their skin as much. But likely we'd use them for DS to start.
Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Did not like Huggies at all. Prefolds are just too complicated for me.
Additional thoughts on diapers?: I really don't find the washing to be much of a chore, but given, DH helps a lot!

Favorite diaper, brand and/or cloth or disposable: Blueberry all in one with stay dry for cloth/Huggies for disposables

Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): I get Blueberry for about $23 per diaper. The cost is more upfront but I won't have to buy any diapers for baby number two, and I'll have two in diapers. So, she'll be diapered for free and my son gets year 3+ free. If that makes sense, from 2nd birthday on is free for him.
What you like about it: I've raved about them enough, bit their all in one so no stuffing. Durable. Zero leaks. Will fit from 12 pounds on. Staydry liner. We use overnight and you can add absorbency. Made in USA. Option for organic. Only 1.5 loads of laundry per week. No smells. Never had a blowout in the carseat. Once you experience THAT lovely situation you'll appreciate a cloth diaper. HUGGIES: especially for the newborn phase they have a flap in the back that helps keep the poop from squishing up their back and out of the diaper.
What you don't like about it, if anything: a little bulky but less bulky that pockets in my opinion. Not as easy to travel with, we use disposables for travel.

Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Smart bottoms. They have a long tongue you have to double fold, it's awful. Bum genius were very bulky for us.

Favorite diaper, brand and/or cloth or disposable: we really like Blueberry Capri covers and Nicki's covers with prefolds. The covers have little pockets in the front and back that help hold the prefolds in and I felt they held better and stronger than the flips did. Also I found the leg gussets a lot better for my guy.

Cost (either actual dollar amount, or just $, $$, $$$, etc.): Nicki's covers run about $12 each and prefolds you can get enough to diaper full time for around $60.
What you like about it: 1. It's cheaper than disposables 2.my kid can wear the same print (that i tend to coordinate with the outfit) most of the day bc you only change the insert unless the she'll gets dirty. 3. I don't need any more diapers for this baby bc we bought them all last time l. I'm ridiculously excited about that. 4. I don't have to worry about midnight trips to the store to buy diapers
What you don't like about it, if anything: I love cloth dispersing. I hate that some times it can seem more complicated than it is, but want to reassure people once you get started, it's easier than it looks.
Is there a diapering option you don't have but are considering? Why?: nah. I've got my diapers already and I like our system
Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: sposies. I don't like the smell or having to remember to grab them at the store. Aios are not for me, and I only like pockets as a swim diaper.
Additional thoughts on diapers?: find what works for you. If it's cloth, great! If it's sposies, great! To each their own, but know if you go the cloth route you have a bunch of ladies willing to help

Favorite diaper, brand and/or cloth or disposable: Kawaii pocket diapers for cloth, Huggies or Aldi brand for disposables.

What you like about it:
We used Huggies when DS was in preemie diapers. He was a long, skinny baby, and they seemed to fit better than Pampers did. When he got into regular sizes & cloth, I started using Aldi diapers when I needed disposables. Love them! They didn’t leak and held up just as well as Huggies.
I tried a couple brands of cloth before trying the Kawaii diapers. I love the ones from that specific website and plan to buy some more for a bigger stash, if we CD this baby. They’re very absorbent, rarely leaked, and worked just like disposables, except we put them in a wet bag instead of throwing them away.

Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: Luvs - They gave DS such a bad diaper rash. When I dropped him off in the morning he was fine, and when I picked him up his little butt was almost bleeding. MIL had been using my nephew’s Luvs on him that day instead of the diapers I’d sent her.
Additional thoughts on diapers?: Doing cloth when you use pockets isn’t really that bad. I had enough diapers that we could go about 3 days between washes. DH hooked up a diaper sprayer so we could spray the poop in the toilet. After we changed the diaper, we sprayed poop ones and put them in the wet bag. I took everything down to the laundry room, washed it all on my long wash cycle with Tide powder, and dried it on medium. Then I sat down and stuffed the diapers so they were ready to go, and put them away. After that it was like using disposables - I took one diaper off DS and put a clean diaper on.
When we went places, like at least a couple hours away, we used disposables instead of cloth. It was easier to travel using disposables, but for everyday cloth really wasn’t hard at all.

You can do either. They make swim cloth diapers or you can buy the little swimmers disposables. When we went to the beach I'd just take DS in the ones we already had since there were no chemicals in the water.

@derbysquirrel since I don't normally use pockets I have a couple I use for swim diapers only, I just don't stuff them

Reusable are way better, anyway. The pool where we take DS to swim lessons requires them. They’re really only to hold in poop. Pee is going to happen no matter what.

So just use a pocket diaper without inserts? That makes sense about it just being for poop. In my head I just pictured an instantly waterlogged giant diaper and couldn't figure out how it would work. Some obvious things aren't so obvious to someone who's never done this, lol. I really feel like an idiot sometimes.

They make reusable swim diapers. Some have snaps like cloth diapers. That’s what we use. I wouldn’t trust a plain cover to hold everything in. And the pool won’t allow that, either.

My swim diapers are made of more swimsuit type material. I’d be afraid to use anything else, because they’ve held in poop twice! And once it was diarrhea

Haha! I've never had a problem and it's also pretty common in my CD groups on fb, it's where I got the idea

Same! Our swim place actually requires a double swim diaper situation, and they will make sure you're following the rules. There was a girl in DS's lesson who always picked that time to poop, and I don't know if she was using the wrong kind or if they just didn't fit, but poop would go EVERYWHERE when she jumped in, so we had to cut class early every time it happened. It was nasty. We used the actual cloth swim diapers and they worked well.

@meeks2020 yeah, I’ve heard it before, too, but I assumed they didn’t allow it for good reason. I don’t want to be the reason why they have to drain the pool and end everyone’s fun!

@derbysquirrel even I use the iPlay swim diapers and I'm a disposable diaper person. But DS is pretty predictable with his poos so I never take him swimming at that time of day and we haven't had a poo in the diapers.

Does anyone have advice on newborn vs preemie diapers? We are expecting an early baby who could be on the little side. My plan was to buy one pack of preemies and not open the box, and if baby is too big (hopefully!) I will just return them. I don’t know if there is a big size difference between them and if I should just skip preemie and get newborn?

We used Pampers Swaddlers during the baby phase. Once DS was mobile we found Huggies worked better; Lil’ Movers worked well but Snug & Dry was my favorite and we stuck with those up until he was potty trained.

As far as nighttime, Huggies was the best hands-down.

We tried Luv’s at one point because they were cheaper, but I wasn’t a huge fan. I might be the minority here but I really didn’t care for Honest Company. Target’s brand is ok.

@kc0711 how early are you anticipating? DS was born at 34 weeks weighing 4 lb 2 oz. and was in the NICU for three weeks, coming home only slightly above his birth weight. They grow out of the premie stuff in the blink of an eye. I dont remember buying that many packs of premie diapers and I’m pretty sure I had leftovers that I donated.

@kc0711 there's nothing wrong with buying in advance and returning if you don't need them The hospital will also have diapers available for you (assuming you're delivering in a hospital) in the correct size. Then when you get home you can either use your box of preemies or (hopefully!) return the box and use your newborn size!

As a side-bar to this, bring an empty bag to the hospital and stash away EVERYTHING they provide! Diapers, wipes, formula (if you're using formula) They will refill these items as you need them. We made it through the first 3 days at home just with what we got from the hospital.

Favorite diaper, brand and/or cloth or disposable: Cloth diapers!!! My fav brand are Nicki’s diaper covers and prefolds.

What you like about it: it’s simple and saves so much money
What you don't like about it, if anything: washing diapers gets tedious but isn’t bad at all

Is there a diapering option you've tried that you absolutely hate? Why?: pocket diapers with microfiber inserts, they are great at first and over time they stink and are hard to get the smell out of.
Additional thoughts on diapers?: cloth diapers can be challenging at first and a greater cost to start but overall they are worth it. I have a bunch from #3 that I will be using for #4 which is great because we aren’t spending any more money on diapers at all...unless I buy more for this one!

@kc0711 DS was born at 37wks, weighed 5lbs 4oz, and was a little under 5lbs when we left the hospital. Pampers NB from the hospital were huge on him, and he peed out of them. We bought Huggies preemie diapers for about 2 weeks until he started to fit into the NB diapers.

I’m going to ask our hospital before delivery and buy a pack or two of preemie diapers if they don’t supply the preemie size. I’ll take one pack, unopened, to the hospital if they don’t keep them. If this LO fits into NB ok, I’ll take them back and get a refund.

Same Day delivery isn’t available where I live. With DS, we were both discharged from the hospital on Christmas Eve. Our first stop upon leaving the hospital was Walmart to buy preemie diapers & clothes for DS so we could get through that day and Christmas when everything was closed.

Thanks @mrs_drc_rn and @mrsbubbles-2 for the advice! We are expecting baby between 32-36 weeks, and no later than 38. I think I’ll just plan to take as many as possible from
the hospital and have newborn at home for when we get there.
