1st appts/bloodwork/scans?

When are your first appointments?

I called Dr. office and I don't get seen until 3/23 when I will be 8 weeks. I see a lot of posts from people who apparenlty already had bloodwork?  I feel like my appt is so far away! Of course I'd probably feel that way if it was tomorrow too but really I just want to know everything is ok. I am almost in denial, it's hard to embrace this until I get some more confirmation everything is going well.

My last pregancy I was leaving the country from weeks 7-10 so they got me in at 6 weeks AND I had an ultrasound that week so I have no idea what is normal.

Re: 1st appts/bloodwork/scans?

  • I also did not (and have never had) early betas drawn. With DS, I wasn’t seen by my OB until 12 weeks. This felt like an eternity, so I looked up free pregnancy clinics that offer earlier ultrasounds. I was able to get a free u/s at 7 weeks that way. AND that particular clinic (Real Choices) hooked me up with free baby gear (car seat, pack n play, diapers, diaper bag, and clothes—all brand new donated items), because I was low income. So that was pretty cool.

I FEEL THE EXACT SAME WAY! Mine is 3/27. Nothing until then. What the heck.

    @concreteayngel
Is there an income requirement for free clinics..? I really just want confirmation of the blood test even. I can wait to see the baby at 8 weeks because it's much more to see then haha

@oaklandava Nope! Just make an appointment.

Be forewarned, some of these places are very Christian-based organizations who try to talk people out of having abortions, etc.

If you go, they will have you take a HPT to confirm, then there will be a short “consultation” where they ask you some stuff “Are you excited about having the baby? Was the baby planned?  Do you have any religious affiliations?” As an atheist, it was a little uncomfortable, but mostly painless. The lady was very friendly and not judgemental at all.

After that, you get your u/s! The clinic was very professional looking. New equipment and a big screen monitor. Mine was transvaginal and i got to see the HB and received printed photos. And again, I got all that free stuff from just from putting my name on their donation list. So based on my experience I’d totally recommend it.

  • My first appointment is on 3/21. I'll have my first ultrasound then and appt with the doctor. I should be right about 7 weeks.

**TW** I've been getting blood work done because of some repeat bright red bleeding. This never happened in other pregnancies, so my doctor wanted numbers. I've never had an appointment before 7 or 8 weeks with DS or DD.

  • I’m not doing early blood work. Just got my positive tests and they scheduled me for March 29 when I’ll be 8 weeks. I did have blood work with my first two though but I’m too busy and tired to go this time. I’ll just wait for my appointment
    nws
  • I had my first with DD at 7w, no b/w. This time I had hcg and progesterone drawn at 5w, and since everything looked good they scheduled an u/s for 7w again.

  • My OB is always 9 weeks for first appt and sonogram. My appointment isn’t until april 10. Seems forever away.

  • My OB tries to schedule first appointments at 8 weeks. With DS, the first opening they had was at about 9.5 weeks. It seemed like that first appointment would never come. This time around I'm going through a fertility center and I'm on all sorts of meds, so I feel like I'm constantly having appointments to track and monitor everything. I go in for my first u/s tomorrow (6w4d) and hopefully graduate to my OB soon.
  • I have my first appointment on 03/16. I'll be 7 weeks. I think they try and wait a bit to have a better chance of seeing/hearing the heartbeat.

I don't have mine set up yet, but I assume it will be between 6-7 weeks. *TW I have a history of two miscarriages and infertility /TW* so I've always had betas and early ultrasounds. After my second beta they will tell me when to schedule an ultrasound.

ETA: With my beta results back my u/s is scheduled for 3/21.

  • We used fertility medication to get pregnant with this baby so that's why I've already had boat loads of bloodwork done so early on. My first ultrasound is on 3/19 at 7 weeks with my reproductive endocrinologist and if all goes well with that, then I'll be able to see an ob. With my last pregnancy I didn't have any early bloodwork or tests and had to wait until 8 weeks for my first set of bloodwork and all so I think that's pretty standard?
  • Mine is scheduled for April 4th...i had originally scheduled my annual exam then so they just switched it to a "confirmation" appointment.  I believe i'll get an ultrasound done because she did one at every visit last go around (though i didn't see her for my "confirmation" of my last one)...so more waiting and hoping everything goes well.  I think after that appointment i'll be a little more at ease...

  • My first OB appt is March 12th, I should be a day before 7wks along. @aztecash so you are actually due at the end of October too??
  • @Baby3oo yep, October 27th, technically. DS was due end of Nov, but didn't decide to grace us with his presence until well into Dec. Pretty sure this one will do the same. Also, it sucks to be at the end of the month because you miss contributing to all the fun discussions.  :)
  • Aww, ok @aztecash I think my due date is October 30th or 31st, won't know for sure until Monday. I had my DD 4days early on Christmas Eve so curious to find out if this baby will be born on time, could definitely be either month tho (:
  • Hi Ladies,

My first US is 3/14 which will be 6 weeks and I have had my blood drawn twice, but this is because I had some trouble getting pregnant and this was my first BFP. After I got my BFP on the HPT, my doctor wanted a blook test right away to confirm. My HCG was 154. I had another test 2 days later to confirm it was doubling, and it was up to 450. I have my six week US and then an 8 week US then should be released to my regular doctor.

The waiting is driving me nuts!!
  • My first appointment is April 2nd which is odd because I’ll already be 9w 1d so I was a bit confused about it. I guess we will see what happened when they call for me to answer questions hoping they move it up.
  • I had my first appt yesterday at barely 4 weeks PG and they drew blood for my first beta number and I will go in again tomorrow for a repeat beta before scheduling a very early ultrasound.

**TW** I have a history of repeat loss, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy so its important to see my beta numbers double appropriately and also important to see that the baby is located in my uterus. **END TW**

Most people who are getting early blood work or ultrasounds done have similar situations.

  • Ok I will take it as a GOOD sign that I don't need to get in there and tested ASAP.

    -TW-

Although, I did have a loss my first pregnancy. I went in for a 2nd u/s at 11 weeks and baby had not grown. So this adds to my anxiety about this wait. I was hoping that would lead them to see me earlier. Maybe I should call the nurse to question it?  I was scheduled just by calling the receptionist and she gave me the generic 8-10 week appt.
  • @Eveinshock I am all for advocating for yourself and the care you believe you deserve. You can always call your OB and leave a message with your concerns and see if they will do betas.
  • I had betas done on Monday. They were low based on LMP (even though I told her I knew O ovulated a week late), so I had repeat done today. If all goes well, I’ll have my first u/s at about 8 weeks. TW-i found out at my last 8 wk scan that the pregnancy wasn’t viable, so I am extra anxious. Tw.

  • I have my first appt on 3/27.  I will only be about 6 weeks but because I had a chemical last month they are bringing me in a bit sooner. The woman at my doctor's office who I spoke to on the phone seemed somewhat shocked that I could be pregnant again.  From what I have read it is not that uncommon.  Anyone experience similar situation?
  • I went in last week at 4 weeks for my first blood draw and go back Monday for my second. I always have low progesterone so I get blood work early (on progesterone again this time

Same here.  They said my levels look fine right now (16.9 @ 4 weeks), though, and I could take the supplements if I wanted because it wouldn't cause any harm.

In any case, my actual first appointment is at 8 weeks, too.  This last one was for the pregnancy confirmation and to get the progesterone RX.

TW -- my first 2 pregnancies were both lost right around 7-8 weeks but no one ever checked my progesterone levels.  My third PG was successful after that doctor started me on progesterone suppositories but she also didn't do progesterone labs for me.  So, I am not convinced that my levels just don't tank somewhere between 5 and 6 weeks.  I also have other low progesterone symptoms (short LP being one) so supplements, here I come!

  • Because I am an IVF patient, I have loads of appointments!  My first pregnancy appointment was today for a beta test!  Level at 10dp5dt was 101!  I'll be going back next Monday for a followup to make sure that the levels are increasing as expected!

I'm thinking I'm 5 weeks, but the nurse practitioner said my uterus felt larger than 5 weeks. They drew blood to check HCG level and will most likely have me in for an ultrasound tomorrow or Thursday!
