Product Spotlight: Misc. Nursery Decor

This is a place for FTMs to ask questions and S+TMs to share the wealth of knowledge they've accumulated on baby products. Each week we'll spotlight a new category of product to help streamline and make it easier to refer back. This week it's.... misc. nursery decor! Think mobiles, rugs, curtains, art, etc. -- anything decorative.

(See here for misc. nursery furniture and here for cribs and here for rockers/gliders

**For this specific spotlight, it might be more helpful to share brands & stores rather than specific items, especially more random ones folks may not have thought of.**

Please use the prompts below to try to share as much relevant info as you can in a format that is easy for those reading to absorb/respond to. If you'd like to recommend/ask questions about more than one product, please copy/paste the prompts as needed. :)

Re: Product Spotlight: Misc. Nursery Decor

  • Oh this is good timing actually.  So I excitedly purchased wall decor from HomeGoods like a week ago for the nursery, but I think I got so hyped in in Pinterest nurseries that I momentarily forgot about safety stuff.  What are everyone's thoughts on hanging wall decor above the crib (like framed stuff)?  The pieces I got are way too big and heavy and now I'm considering returning them or at least putting them over the dresser or on either side of the window instead.  But what about smaller, lighter stuff for above the crib?  I live in NJ so earthquakes aren't really a thing and then I'd double stick it to the wall with nails and then probably 3m stuff.  Here are pics for reference:

Big ones will go somewhere else but what about something the size/weight of the little ones (they're just canvases)?  I think I'm going to return those ones in particular but I'm really struggling with what is actually safe above the crib.  I don't really want a bare wall and I hate decals.

@becca_123 a ST+M may correct me but I don't think it is a big deal. Also not in any earthquake danger. If you are concerned or it is heavy I would just make sure that it is secured to the stud. I am planing on hanging a silver paper mache deer head above the crib. Also debating hanging this sign over the crib in addition to the deer head but not sure how it would look with both. Sign directly above and then the deer head or deer head with the sign above that...

ETA: however I don't want shelves over the crib or changing table because I'm concerned about stuff falling off onto LO
deer head is like the bigger one

  • @becca_123 The small canvases seem perfectly fine to me. We have a small dinosaur picture above DS’s crib right now and he’ll kick the wall some nights and it hasn’t moved.

  • @krashke @becca_123 just make sure anything truly heavy is not only secured to the wall but secured to itself. My mom hung a big framed art piece over her bed, and one day we came home and the wire had snapped in half, and it had fallen right where she sleeps. The part attached to the wall remained  :#

@becca_123 I also think the small one seems fine to me... just make sure that you hang it high enough from the crib that LO won't be able to reach it once they are pulling up to a standing position.

I also wanted to add that a small lamp is so important.  MOTN feeding/diaper changes require some light, but you don't want to fully wake up, so a softer light (or a bulb made for sleep) will be very helpful for both you and LO.

  • @krashke I agree that I didnt really think it was a big deal and I've never had anything fall before but it would be so typical (and disastrous) for this to fall - or even get pulled down by LO when she is big enough.  I'll check out where the studs are on the wall.  The crib needs to be moved even more off center so I doubt they'll be where I need them to be.  And for your design question - first instinct would be to have the sign directly above and then the deer head above that - but you'll have to play with it and see.

@dinodna3 I figured they'd be ok, and they're small enough where LO may not reach them as she grows!

@doxiemoxie212 Eek that's so scary!  Definitely makes me think I should secure heavy things with something else as well as the original hardware.
  • @jsl82 Thanks, I figured that was an issue which is another reason why I decided against the big ones near the crib.  I don't know why I didn't think of these things in the first place.
  • We hung three large canvases over DS's bed.  They were super secure, but I also put the tacky 3M stuff on the back, just in case.  I recommend doing the same over the changing table. When DS got more mobile, he routinely tried to pull the three framed photos off the wall.  The tacky stuff helped.
  • We did wall paper decal things, so I’m no help. If you aren’t on a fault line, you should be fine with drywall screws for heavy art.
  • We're hoping to get stick-on metallic stars {I may have mentioned this before} but we recently also got little stick-on cherry tree branches.

Anyone have a suggestion on if we can incorporate both of them, or are they just too different? I'm thinking they're too different but maybe someone else has an idea :)
