Re: Weekly Questions 2/25

  • Other than PNVs, are you mommas taking anything else?
  • Magnesium for sleep but that's it.

  • Other than PNVs, are you mommas taking anything else?
That's all I'm taking.  Assuming I'm not so nauseous I skip it

  • Other than PNVs, are you mommas taking anything else?
I'm currently just taking PNV and nausea meds. I'm on gummy PNVs because damn are the solid ones rough on my stomach (probably the iron).

So, as soon as I'm out of morning sickness land, I'll probably end up on an iron supplement, which wreck my stomach.
  • Other than PNVs, are you mommas taking anything else?
Prenatals and probiotics. Thinking about adding in magnesium.
I asked my midwife at my last appointment if she cared at all what kind of prenatals I was taking and she said nope, just cared that I was taking them.
  • Prenatal gummies, tums/ranitidine and my Zoloft. I've already had one round of antibiotics for bronchitis and I'm about to have another 7 days for group b strep.

Did they tell you to take some probiotics so you don't get a yeast infection or diarrhea? My doc was really insistent that I take probiotics with my antibiotics.
  • Prenatals and baby asprin as a preventative for preeclampsia since I’m at a higher risk (per MFM).

I take fiber gummies pretty much first thing in the morning, and then later in the day, a prenatal multi, 2000 Vitamin D, one DHA capsule, and calcium (or even just half, or none, as needed, depending on the number of servings of dairy I had that day).

I also take 50 Levo first thing in the morning, so I need to be careful not to take my vitamins within 4 hours of the Levothyroxin.

As far as probiotics, I have been making a point to get them through food sources, like yogurt, raw kraut, or kimchi etc.

Are you still in the first trimester? My midwife is having me meet with the MFM this week to discuss baby aspirin (and other stuff) since I had severe pre-eclampsia last time. She said though to not take the baby aspirin until the 2nd trimester. Does the aspirin hurt your stomach? Or is the dose low enough not to bother you? I have a crazy sensitive stomach so I'm kinda worried about it.
  • My doctor told me to not lift weights over 15 pounds but my toddler weighs 30 pounds? Did she mean working out weights or anything over 15 pounds? I've been carrying my toddler around the whole time.

I've been taking levothyroxine for my thyroid, a prenatal with iron that is probably causing my constipation, dha and vitamin d gummies.
  • Pnv with dha and iron, calcimate complete (calcium, vitamin d and magnesium) and every other day I take an additional iron supplement. My hemoglobin tanked last time and it never recovered to prepregnancy levels so I've been more proactive this time.
  • @stothi I’m just exiting the first trimester (13 weeks) but my MFM and OB wanted me to start taking it right away (8 weeks was my first appointment). My MFM told me she wanted me to take 2 baby asprin pills which are 81mg each. I haven’t had any issues with taking the baby asprin but I wouldn’t say I have a sensitive stomach either. They are extremely little pills so hopefully they don’t end up bothering you. I don’t have previous experience the preeclampsia but since I’m pregnant with twins I guess my chances are higher at it developing.

  • @stothi They didn't mention probiotics. But I have an Rx leftover from when I took the last round and miraculously didn't end up getting a yeast infection. Usually abx are a guaranteed infection for me.

  • @knitknitread ask your doctor about bariatric iron. It's a slow release option and the ones I take are chewable (I suck at taking pills). They are soooo much easier on my stomach. Also if you take the iron at night then you sleep through the stomach symptoms (in my experience).

Ask about probiotics. I took them with this round of antibiotics and didn't have any issues. I don't normally get yeast infections but my GI tract is a delicate freaking flower and gets upset easily so antibiotics normally wreck my gut.
  • I think I need the fiber gummies :grimace: thanks ladies
  • @yosemite2018 I will definitely be writing that down and asking my doctor about it! Thank you!
  • PNV plus 2000 vit D. I was a total zombie even after DD started sleeping well and vit D changed my life.

That seems really odd to be put on such a restrictive lifting rule so early.  Are you high risk in some way?  I would ask her why she feels that's necessary.  I was always under the impression that unless there were specific medical concerns, it was good to keep up with whatever your prepregancy exercise routine.  And I would consider toddler care exercise :)
  • @marmarii I was wondering the same thing as @nackie. The weight restriction makes sense if you're high-risk. Do you have a patient portal where you're able to shoot them a message about it?
  • Magnesium for sleep but that's it.
This timing is so perfect. I have been taking 400 MG of magnesium (oxide specifically) before bed for years - it helps with sleep and being backed up. I also have 50 MG in my PNV.  I had read that it was so good for pregnant women, so I haven't changed it. Well this weekend I read that you don't want to take more than 360 MG when pregnant, so I panicked bc I have been taking this everyday.. I went to the pharmacy and they said I was totally fine and that MG is often recommended in pregnancy - and anything under 500 MG is not risky.  Anyway, I am calling my Dr to check with her too - but with these types of questions (non-urgent) they usually take 1-2 days to get back to you so I am curious how many MG you take?

Has anyone else spoken with their Dr or midwife about this?
  • @marym94 when I asked my midwife if I could take magnesium she said sure and it should help with this and that. I asked her if it mattered at all what kind and she said nope. So no, I didn't ask her about dosing but her completely nonchalant attitude about choosing a type of supplement lead me to believe specific dosing wasn't a big concern of her's either since different brands and formulations will all have slightly different dosing.
I can't answer your question definitively, but I was left with the impression that anything considered a "normal" dose is fine. I do think it's worth checking with your doc moving forward cause peace of mind is always worth it, but I honestly don't think you have anything to be worried about.
Please do report back what your doc says though, since a lot of us are taking magnesium or thinking about adding it. I'd like to know what they say about it.
  • Other than PNVs, are you mommas taking anything else?
Just PNV and a DHA. I'm supposed to be taking Calcium/Vit D too but figured the PNV was more important while I wait for my stomach to settle down.

I'll start up iron soon too since I ended up having to supplement with DS. Figured I might as well get ahead of it this time.

  • @marimarii I would ask your doc about the restrictions. My OB specifically said I’m ok to lift DD... so I would ask just to be sure.
  • Everyone taking DHA, was that specifically recommended to you?  Or are you taking it cause you are smarter than me and know something I don't? My prenatals last time had DHA included but I'll be honest and say I didn't even think to check the ones I have now.
  • @stothi My OB gave me a "welcome to pregnancy" kit with pamphlets, more of her practice's info, a water bottle, coupons, supplements etc. There was a pack of prenatals and a pack of DHA, and when I asked her about it she said she recommends them. So I'm finishing up my prenatals, and the ones she gave me, and then I'll go buy DHA as well.
  • @Redpuma119 I got a welcome to pregnancy packet at my last ob, but so far nothing with this one. So far the only thing I've been told is take a prenatal of some kind and don't use medications you don't need to.
  • @marym94 OB nurse said no more then 350mg from a supplement daily.
  • @stothi My prenatals don’t have DHA in them so I have a separate pill for that. Although if I’m being honest, I only take it about once a week because it’s massive and my nausea/gag reflex is still really bad. My birthing center is big on everyone taking their prenatals and DHA.
  • @stothi
Thank you! I should hear back today or tomorrow and I will let you all know what they say!
  • @stothi  I was just taking it bc its good for baby's brain. :)

    https://jillcastle.com/childhood-nutrition/dha-benefits-brain/

My midwife hasn't recommended anything in particular unless I've asked, but she said everything I was taking is good.

@SkilledSailor. What brand?  I have taken two, one that I prefer is more $$ but I trust the brand, Nordic Naturals.  I don't think they are too gigantic.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B015RZ84V4/ref=mp_s_a_1_3_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1519666482&sr=8-3&keywords=prenatal%2Bdha%2Bnordic%2Bnaturals&dpPl=1&dpID=51dqVxGkEML&ref=plSrch&th=1&psc=1

The other brand I tried is just one a day, and that's this:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B012U33WO0/ref=pd_aw_fbt_121_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=4HA815A6T94N7FNXFMKP

I think you just want to choose the one a day dose at check out, but also, not that big.  No bigger than my prenatal.

OMG @Redpuma119. Too funny!!!  If only we could manage to start a little of that back up.!  it's been way too long...  :# I think DH is nervous about it or something now...
  • @businesswife Girl, you are on top of it! Hopefully those recommendations help some other ladies out on this board! I'm vegetarian so I'm taking Deva DHA. There aren't too many vegan options for DHA supplements and most are pretty big unfortunately. I've found a few liquid forms I may try soon. In the mean time, I've been loading up on flax seed and chia seed even though I know those don't convert to DHA as well.
  • PNV and fiber supplements right now.

I was on iron before this. I stopped taking it because of the nausea, but might start again if I start getting RLS. I have it off and on anyways, but not recently. Low iron can contribute, and when your blood volume increases, your iron doesn't necessarily go up with it. So if I feel like I'm having issues I'll start it again. My OB said that they'll check hemoglobin levels and stuff when they do GD testing so if I needed it then, that's the other reason I'd restart.

I agree that taking iron pills at night makes them easier to stomach. Since you aren't supposed to take them with food, that's the easiest time for me anyways, I just have to remember not to snack in the evening.

I'll probably also start taking fish oil pills. Nordic Naturals is what I used last time, the same ones @BusinessWife linked, and I'd definitely do those again. They never tasted fishy or gave me fishy burps or anything like I've heard some brands do and I trust the quality. I'm slightly concerned because I've heard it can increase bleeding tendencies, but I didn't have issues last time so I think I'm worrying about nothing. I also read through a bunch of research on it and it was inconclusive for my issues, nothing concrete to worry about.

  • I know when nausea ends is different for each mom, but how do you decide when to try to wean off whatever anti-nausea methods you're using?

I've been fortunate that crackers in the morning immediately after waking up seem to keep most of my nausea at bay, but I'm getting tired of having to stuff my face with crackers the second I wake up in the morning. I'm afraid to try to skip a day because if I'm not actually ready to stop them skipping a morning will most likely end up in me throwing up all day.

So whether you're on meds, need to eat ASAP in the morning, whatever method: how do you decide when to give stopping it a shot?

@DanyTargaryen I’m only 9+2 now so I have a ways to go, but I know I didn’t take my nausea meds before bed last night and felt terrible when I woke up this morning. It usually keeps the nausea at bay until the afternoon, today I have been fighting it all day with nothing helping. I probably won’t even try to stop until I hit 14 weeks since my nausea is so bad.

    ETA more details
  • @DanyTargaryen for me it’s easier to tell because even on a full diclegis dose, I’m still nauseated. With #1, I never intentionally went off the meds but there were 2 occasions where I missed the nighttime dose (16 weeks and 23 weeks) and I vomited the following morning both times. So I stayed on it the entire pregnancy. I actually felt sick the day or two after giving birth because I didn’t bring the meds to the hospital and those hormones were still coursing through me.

It looks like it’s shaping up to be the same for this pregnancy as well. I wouldn’t try to go off them unless you’re feeling 100% when you’re on them. But then again, I have a super strong aversion to vomiting so I’ll do anything to avoid it.
