Appointments Week of 2/19

Re: Appointments Week of 2/19

  • @BusinessWife I’m sure it’s fine. My practice only does catches at the office which could be any time of day based on your appt.  good luck today!

  • @BusinessWife yay for getting to see the baby and great measurements!
  • Got my blood drawn for my NIPT test this morning.  So impatient for the results.  I really want to hold off telling anyone till I get the results back and know things are ok, but I'm not sure my bump is going to coorporate.  Also DH and I have a bet on the sex.
  • @BusinessWife great news! Must be awesome to see the little one moving around, I can’t wait!
  • @ellbeedee @mamab2under2 same thing happened to me 2 weeks earlier than LMP. I was originally due in August.  When I went for my January visit the ob did a quick scan to make sure baby was growing.

Dr appt this week to check heartbeat and any questions. Last pregnancy after my first appointment they scheduled the rest of my appointments right away. That way I got decent appointment times throughout the pregnancy. Hopefully this weeks appointment they will schedule them all out again.
  • @smsaulino my first pregnancy I lost 5 lbs in the first trimester. I think its pretty common what with all the nausea and all.  I ended up gaining 35 total, so it didn't seem to be a long term issue.
  • I'm waiting for the results of the NIPT/cell-free DNA test. They said 2 weeks, which isn't for another week, but I figure maybe it will come earlier! The results will get posted to the online portal, so I've been desperately checking my email for that "you have new test results available" email! I did hear the heartbeat on the doppler at the last appointment a week ago, and that gave me a little bit of confidence things are going well at least.

My next appointment isn't for two more weeks--March 7th. It'll be an ultrasound and then the appointment with the OB (the first one with the doc--the one last week was the nurse practitioner).

And I need to have a glucose tolerance test that day too. Ugh. I had gestational diabetes with my daughter, so they're screening me early this time. I had a really rough time with it, and I'm expecting it again, but I'm hoping not.
  • ooo yeah, weight loss in first tri. This time around I’ve been steadily losing from constant nausea and occasional vomiting. Between 6 to 11 weeks I lost 7 pounds.  haven’t weighed in this week

I don’t think it’s cause for concern unless you either can’t keep ANY food or water down for long periods (usually a HG diagnosis) or if your fundal height measurements/baby’s measurements on ultrasounds start to show that they’re consistently behind. And even then, I know a few moms who consistently measured a week or two behind without issue.

Last pregnancy I weighed exactly the same at 10 weeks as I did at 18 weeks. Then from 19w on I put on like 25 pounds :flushed: it usually all evens out in the end

  • @smsaulino - I'm down almost 5 lbs since my BFP. I haven't seen my dr since my initial confirmation appointment but I lost a few pounds at the beginning with DS and at 20 weeks I had only gained 5 pounds. Dr was fine with that and said it seemed like my body would just gain at a later pace. Dr was right and I gained a lot the second half of my pregnancy. Based on my experience, I'm not sure why your dr is worried about weight loss. Had you lost 20 lbs? Ok, maybe. But 6 doesn't seem worrisome according to my dr and you'll most likely more than make up for it later on.

I think some drs put more stock in weight gain trends and averages than others do, and it's such an individual thing.

  • Hope it goes well! @Car0liiine. Ikwym, the anxiety has a way of building up leading to the next apt... And then it'll go great and you will be able to breathe again!  I know it's so hard, but I have to just keep reminding myself not to psyche myself out too too much. (((Hugs)))
  • Is everyone that is getting the NIPT over 35? My doctor won't let me get it because I am only 33.

@stothi I have Kaiser in California, not sure if you are familiar with it. It's a medical group and insurance  combined and they said they won't even prescribe the test as it's not accurate for women under 35. Was pretty bummed about this as my first baby pregnancy blood test results came back 1 in 2 for down syndrome, but since my first baby was healthy and didn't end up having downs I'm not considered high risk. This was when I was 30.
  • I am 30, will be 31 at delivery. My insurance covers it, but I opted out, as it's only a screening test, so I don't feel the need for me.

How's it not accurate for women under 35? I'm gonna have to Google the hell out of that, cause right now that makes no sense to me. I could understand if they said something about not standard or not needed but I don't understand how age plays into accuracy. Huh.
I don't have Kaiser but I have friends who do, and I've heard they can be difficult to work with. But of course I heard this from friends having issues so obviously that's a biased opinion.
  • @stothi Does blood magically change at 35? Who knows. I didn't really understand it either.  Oh well! I guess I will do the old fashion way again, let's hope for better results and less stress this time!
  • @marimarii I have Kaiser and they did a blood test with my NT scan but they just don’t cover a test that checks for gender if you’re under 35 or not high risk. My sister delivered at 35 and hers was covered. The blood test was referred to as the NIPT test when I took it but then today my OB called it the 1st trimester screening and said I’ll have the NIPT test at my next appt. (17w). So who knows...
  • @marimarii that seems unlikely to me. Dna is dna. And the fetal dna in your bloodstream doesn’t change because of your age. It is less likely to find sufficient fetal dna in the mother’s bloodstream if she is obese, but that is the only qualifier I’ve heard about who gets results.
  • @marimarii. I will be 35 when I deliver, even though my eggs were collected at age 34.  My birthday is the end of this month, so they would have had to be collected in May or June to correlate with an EDD <35.

Since both my retrievals happened in September, apparently I will have NIPT covered by insurance for all my subsequent pregnancies, too, (provided I keep the insurance, obv lol).  I am not even super keen on it TBH, but it's covered based on age so I'm trying to roll with it.
  • @spottedginger well I am a perfectly healthy weight (not even over weight) so that couldn't be the reason for me at least. Anyway I am over it, I have a super healthy two year old and feel blessed I am able to have a second! Life is good at the minute!
  • The only reason I’m considering NIPT is because it’ll apply toward my deductible and once that’s met we’re only responsible for 10% of claims. I know that’s not great, but that’s what you have to deal with many of today’s insurance plans.

The wording "not accurate" is crap, but it's true that the way that screening tests are rated (rates of false positives and false negatives, etc.) are based on the expected and actual frequencies of the positive and negative results in the population. And only screening tests that are accurate to a certain degree are considered "valid" for different reasons. It;s likely it's not as reliable in people under 35, just based on the rates of false positives or negatives, which is why it's not recommended. Any screening test is the same way--not only is it financially (resource-wise) not "worth it" to screen people at a low risk, but if people are at a low risk the rates of false positives and negatives may actually outweigh the actual true positives, etc. potentially making it pretty worthless.
(Sorry for the rant, I have a PhD in epidemiology, let me know if you have any questions on this type of stuff!)

Personally, I did not get the NIPT 2 years ago when I was <35; instead I had a different blood test with the NT scan. The NIPT was not covered then, and the test i had was covered. Now I'm over 35 and I had the NIPT and it's covered. Not sure what else changed in those 2 years though--it seems the NIPT is much more readily done (it's probably cheaper and easier now than it was) than it used to be.
  • @marimarii I was 30 for my first pregnancy and am 32 now and opted to do a NIPT both times. I paid out of pocket last time but have better insurance this time so it’s covered (not Kaiser). Kaiser is complicated in that you have to seriously advocate for yourself if you want to do anything beyond the basic/normal care. I used to be with them and I always had to push hard when I wanted extra care or to see a specialist. I’m not with them now, but that was my experience previously.

  • I turned 35 6 weeks after my due date last time and they didn't offer NIPT.  I got the first trimester screen since I was "close" as they put it.  If that had come back with reason for concern they would have done more tests, but fortunately it didn't so I don't know what those tests would have been.
  • @Lcardinal04 God, I hope that's true about it being easier the second time!
  • @MandyMost thanks for explaining that!

I’m doing the NIPT (panorama and harmony tests through Natera) and I’m in my late twenties. It wasn’t mentioned with my first pregnancy but that was when I was seeing a different doctor at the same practice. We opted in this time knowing that we’ll probably have to pay $200 OOP. I want the data! And finding out the sex is a nice perk, we’ll definitely want the extra couple of weeks to know if we need to budget for a mostly new baby wardrobe. We’ll reuse as much of DS’s clothes as we can but if it’s a girl then we’ll obviously be doing some shopping

  • @nackie he swore it was! He said second pregnancy and delivery tells you pretty much how any subsequent will be, and first is a complete outlier in terms of labor/delivery. He added the normal disclaimer that things can happen, but generally his rule was true.

DD was a forceps assisted birth and he also threw out statistics that made it seem like forceps were far more common than I thought they were. My birth class before DD mentioned them being a dying art that a lot of Drs aren't trained in extensively anymore.

    Anyways it was interesting.
  • @Lcardinal04 interesting. My mw said that second births are the fastest but then after that all bets are off and third/ fourth can be long and stubborn.
  • Weird.  Ya my mom told me for my brother she had precipitous labour.  Then for me, I was long, slow, stubborn and came out blue + forceps.  :#
