1st Trimester

Midwife refuses to listen to or measure heartbeat??

My midwife won't check the heart beat, she says it's bad for the baby?? I had an ultrasound Monday measuring right on track (9w 3d) and we saw the flicker but she wouldn't let me listen to the heartbeat or measure the rate?! I don't understand and am kinda bumed!

Re: Midwife refuses to listen to or measure heartbeat??

  • My Dr won't listen to the heartbeat until after the first trimester either. She said new research has found that it may be harmful for the baby, so to err on the side of caution she relies on the Ultrasound.

  • With my first my OB didn’t seem to be concern with listening early on. Had US every two weeks since 6 wks due to complications. With this one i had an early US (different OB) and they went off the flicker until about 8 wks when they measured it. Not much measuring of it since then other than NT scan and tomorrow’s anatomy scan. Could that be that every practice is different.

When I had my first appointment around that time, she did check the heartbeat but said not to worry because she might not be able to find it because the baby is so small still. She did find it, but I've heard of places where they don't because it's quite possible it's not loud enough yet.

I have never heard of it being bad for the baby though. You can see it on the ultrasound, I wouldn't worry.
  • At my second u/s (6+5) we did listen, but the doctor commented we would only check a brief clip, because it's too strong when they are so small.  So that was a little scary, but at least we got to hear it(!) and measured the rate.  The next time was 8+1 When I graduated the RE, and she let me listen at least until the screen was filled with waves, and didn't seem concerned.

Now that I'm with she midwife, she is listening with the doppler, on the apts we don't have u/s.  I don't plan on getting a home Doppler to listen all the time, but I'm surprised she doesn't think it's safe to listen with the Doppler for just a few minutes every several weeks.  I have never heard of that.
