Good Reads

Does anyone have any book suggestions that are pregnancy related? I've recently read Belly Laughs (Jenny Mcarthy) and am in the middle of Expecting Better.

Re: Good Reads

  • @redpuma119 I really like Expecting Better and Bringing Up BeBe, which is about the difference of American child rearing and Parisian child rearing.
  • Does Baby Bargains count? Pretty sure that was the only book I read, and the last book I read...  o:)

  • Expecting Better is the book my doctor recommended I get! I haven’t yet, oops haha.
  • @skilledsailor I will look into the other book! @ashh2018, definitely read it. If you're science driven, you will love it.
  • @ashh2018 I agree with @Redpuma119 Expecting Better is a great book. It helps you see the true pros and cons of things so you can make better decisions about your pregnancy for yourself and your baby.

DH and I enjoyed reading Sh!t No One Tells You : A Guide to Surviving Your Baby's First Year  by Dawn Dais before #1. I think that's actually the only pregnancy/baby book I've read all the way through.
There is a book too but, I recommend watching the Happiest Baby on the Block video when it gets closer to delivery time because those newborn calming techniques are key!

  • For pregnancy: I third (or fourth, fifth) expecting better
chidbirth: Ina May is worth reading but some of it is a bit off the wall.  I liked birthing from within, too. Also, the website evidence based birth
babies: moms on call. The only one worth reading, in my opinion.
  • I also liked Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. I only made it through the first half which is all birth stories, but it made me feel like I could really do the whole labor and delivery thing.

  • Natural Hospital Birth-for any ladies who have had any trauma or otherwise want a non medicated delivery. Great thoughts and ideas and info and plans. Probably a great read for everyone, just because it does give good info on the whole process and things that can help you through delivery and writing a birth plan.

Echoing the recs for Expecting Better and Bringing up Bebe. The “pause” method mentioned in BUB I think is really helpful when it comes to sleep.

I also really loved Ina May Gaskin’s book. It helped me get in the right mindset for an epi-free/low intervention birth. I still haven’t moved it from my nightstand, I’m kind of attached to it.  Planning to re-read it in third tri. It’s definitely crunchy but very empowering.

I didnt read any breastfeeding books but I kind of wish I had.

  • @fwtx5815 I read the La Leche League breastfeeding book and it was pretty helpful. I've heard some stuff about it being too forceful about breast is best but I chose to go into it for the info, not for the worldview.

Also, for anyone else, The Birth Partner is the least crunchy, most informative and practical book I found. I haven't read Expected Better so I can't compare though. It's written for the partner so it's not written "to" the mama but I've given it to several expecting friends who have found it helpful for themselves as well as for their partner.

  • For those looking for a breastfeeding book: Boobin’ All Day, Boobin’ All Night was my savior. It’s funny, relatable, and so reassuring about what’s normal in a breastfeeding baby, toddler, etc.  I highly recommend!!
  • These are all great! Thank you for all of the suggestions!
  • Birth Skills by Juju Sundin. It's a guide to helping through labor and is good even if you know you want an epidural. All sorts of techniques and stories about labor. Not granola. I will read it again in third tri

  • During my first pregnancy, my husband and I enjoyed " What to expect while your wife is expanding"

Loving these suggestions!  I have heard good things about "Mindful Birthing," and I plan to get that one for sure.

Now I also more seriously thinking about getting the, "Birth Partner," book for H, too!  Thanks!

    ETC title of book
  • Not a book, but the birth without fear blog is also awesome. I read it daily towards the end of my first pregnancy. There are tons of birth stories to read through!
