Update: NT scan went well! Lots of measurements all ranging from 1mm, 1mm, 1.1mm, to 1.4mm and he said they want to see under 3mm. So, awesome! So fun to see the kid wiggling and thrashing around in there. Saw the midwife and had a good little chat, weight was only up .5 lbs from two weeks ago, so I'm happy with that, too. We should have nice normal results back from the Materniti 21 in a couple weeks, but we are staying Team Green, so no sex. ...although I think DH is leaning towards wanting to find out now, which surprised me! Lol. But he doesn't want to pressure me, either.
Oh, and incidentally, we ended up needing a second urine sample as well! Lol one for the protein/ glucose, and the other for idk what.
Got my blood drawn for my NIPT test this morning. So impatient for the results. I really want to hold off telling anyone till I get the results back and know things are ok, but I'm not sure my bump is going to coorporate. Also DH and I have a bet on the sex.
I had a consult with a home birth midwife (second midwife) today, and I'm totally excited. We'll be signing up with her. We had a consult with a different one last week (or weeker before, totally unsure) and that only felt OK.
I still need to figure out my OB back up though, I'll be seeing both for care as one is covered by insurance and the other is an underground person (thanks Illinois for making on choices illegal!) My original long term Gyno that I saw last week for the first time while pregnant was way too...medical oriented and asked no questions, didn't want to discuss my vbac concerns and was borderline irritated that I turned down the NIPT testing. It's just not something I need, we'll find out what we need to know at anatomy scan or birth. I'm not against people having these tests, I just don't want them.
But, yay, I found a midwife that I can trust and feel comfortable with, or thinks of me as an expecting mother, not a patient. So happy!

@ellbeedee@mamab2under2 same thing happened to me 2 weeks earlier than LMP. I was originally due in August. When I went for my January visit the ob did a quick scan to make sure baby was growing.
Dr appt this week to check heartbeat and any questions. Last pregnancy after my first appointment they scheduled the rest of my appointments right away. That way I got decent appointment times throughout the pregnancy. Hopefully this weeks appointment they will schedule them all out again.
My appointment went really great today. Everything looked so perfect! 12 week ultrasound is a lot different than the 8 week one. At the 8 weeker, baby still resembled a "blob" as I like to say... but today, baby's arms and legs were moving, the head is pretty big. At least via ultrasound, we were cleared from downs. We will get blood test results back for cardiac defects next week. Doctor was a little concerned with weight loss. I haven't gained at all but have only lost 6 lbs.. but it's been going down a couple lbs with each appointment. At first, doctor was worried about preterm labor due to my pelvic kidney, but today she looked at my ultrasound of the kidneys and said the chance is extremely low.
I had my eight week appointment on Monday which included an ultrasound. We saw the baby and its little heart beat - 155. My three year old son came with us since he was off preschool. He thought it was pretty cool!
I had my ultrasound today and baby was measuring two days later than I thought, so now I am due 9/30 instead of 9/28. I barely made it into the September month. Heartbeat was nice and strong at 171.
Had a checkup this morning at 11+2 and all is good! HR was 168 We chose not to do the NIPT. It was so great to see my OB who delivered my DD 5 years ago; she is amazing!
Me: 32 DH: 32 BFP #1: 1/23/2012 DD: Born 9/20/2012 BFP #2: 12/30/2017 DS: Due 9/10/2018
just did my NIPT this morning (I'm AMA) and they said 1-2 weeks for results, and then I won't have my scan until I am 13 weeks bc of Spring Break and that sounds so far away (3 weeks) so now time for more waiting!
@smsaulino my first pregnancy I lost 5 lbs in the first trimester. I think its pretty common what with all the nausea and all. I ended up gaining 35 total, so it didn't seem to be a long term issue.
I'm waiting for the results of the NIPT/cell-free DNA test. They said 2 weeks, which isn't for another week, but I figure maybe it will come earlier! The results will get posted to the online portal, so I've been desperately checking my email for that "you have new test results available" email! I did hear the heartbeat on the doppler at the last appointment a week ago, and that gave me a little bit of confidence things are going well at least.
My next appointment isn't for two more weeks--March 7th. It'll be an ultrasound and then the appointment with the OB (the first one with the doc--the one last week was the nurse practitioner).
And I need to have a glucose tolerance test that day too. Ugh. I had gestational diabetes with my daughter, so they're screening me early this time. I had a really rough time with it, and I'm expecting it again, but I'm hoping not.
ooo yeah, weight loss in first tri. This time around I’ve been steadily losing from constant nausea and occasional vomiting. Between 6 to 11 weeks I lost 7 pounds. haven’t weighed in this week
I don’t think it’s cause for concern unless you either can’t keep ANY food or water down for long periods (usually a HG diagnosis) or if your fundal height measurements/baby’s measurements on ultrasounds start to show that they’re consistently behind. And even then, I know a few moms who consistently measured a week or two behind without issue.
Last pregnancy I weighed exactly the same at 10 weeks as I did at 18 weeks. Then from 19w on I put on like 25 pounds it usually all evens out in the end

@smsaulino - I'm down almost 5 lbs since my BFP. I haven't seen my dr since my initial confirmation appointment but I lost a few pounds at the beginning with DS and at 20 weeks I had only gained 5 pounds. Dr was fine with that and said it seemed like my body would just gain at a later pace. Dr was right and I gained a lot the second half of my pregnancy. Based on my experience, I'm not sure why your dr is worried about weight loss. Had you lost 20 lbs? Ok, maybe. But 6 doesn't seem worrisome according to my dr and you'll most likely more than make up for it later on.
I think some drs put more stock in weight gain trends and averages than others do, and it's such an individual thing.

I saw my OB today and measured 13w 1d (2 days ahead). She said everything looked great from my NT scan last week and I got to hear baby’s heartbeat for the 1st time. She checked between the legs and saw a nice umbilical cord so it’ll be at least 4+ weeks (next appt) until I know the sex. I’m a little annoyed that even with scheduling my next appt. 4 weeks out, all the good days and times are taken so I scheduled my next appt. after that as well. They wouldn’t schedule my anatomy scan yet but my next appt. is at 17 weeks so I figure it’ll be in early April- right in between my OB appts.
My doc also cleared me for all the travel (planes and mountains) I want to do this summer so I have some planning to do!
Lots of anxiety about my appointment tomorrow afternoon. Just scared to get bad news. On the flip side if everything is okay, I might be ready to let myself start to bond with baby and get excited. FX!
Hope it goes well! @Car0liiine. Ikwym, the anxiety has a way of building up leading to the next apt... And then it'll go great and you will be able to breathe again! I know it's so hard, but I have to just keep reminding myself not to psyche myself out too too much. (((Hugs)))
Is everyone that is getting the NIPT over 35? My doctor won't let me get it because I am only 33.
You doc can't not let you have it. That's not their call to make. Its a question of if your insurance will cover it or not. Usually under 35 they won't, so you'd have to pay out of pocket. I'm older than dirt so for me it's covered so I honestly haven't the slightest idea how much it costs.
Eta: I'm from the US. It dawns on me that if you are from Canada or elsewhere I actually don't know who decides what. I know the healthcare system in Canada is very different from the US, but I don't know much about it other than that.
@stothi I have Kaiser in California, not sure if you are familiar with it. It's a medical group and insurance combined and they said they won't even prescribe the test as it's not accurate for women under 35. Was pretty bummed about this as my first baby pregnancy blood test results came back 1 in 2 for down syndrome, but since my first baby was healthy and didn't end up having downs I'm not considered high risk. This was when I was 30.
I am 30, will be 31 at delivery. My insurance covers it, but I opted out, as it's only a screening test, so I don't feel the need for me.

How's it not accurate for women under 35? I'm gonna have to Google the hell out of that, cause right now that makes no sense to me. I could understand if they said something about not standard or not needed but I don't understand how age plays into accuracy. Huh. I don't have Kaiser but I have friends who do, and I've heard they can be difficult to work with. But of course I heard this from friends having issues so obviously that's a biased opinion.
@stothi Does blood magically change at 35? Who knows. I didn't really understand it either. Oh well! I guess I will do the old fashion way again, let's hope for better results and less stress this time!
@marimarii I have Kaiser and they did a blood test with my NT scan but they just don’t cover a test that checks for gender if you’re under 35 or not high risk. My sister delivered at 35 and hers was covered. The blood test was referred to as the NIPT test when I took it but then today my OB called it the 1st trimester screening and said I’ll have the NIPT test at my next appt. (17w). So who knows...
@marimarii that seems unlikely to me. Dna is dna. And the fetal dna in your bloodstream doesn’t change because of your age. It is less likely to find sufficient fetal dna in the mother’s bloodstream if she is obese, but that is the only qualifier I’ve heard about who gets results.
@marimarii. I will be 35 when I deliver, even though my eggs were collected at age 34. My birthday is the end of this month, so they would have had to be collected in May or June to correlate with an EDD <35. Since both my retrievals happened in September, apparently I will have NIPT covered by insurance for all my subsequent pregnancies, too, (provided I keep the insurance, obv lol). I am not even super keen on it TBH, but it's covered based on age so I'm trying to roll with it.
@spottedginger well I am a perfectly healthy weight (not even over weight) so that couldn't be the reason for me at least. Anyway I am over it, I have a super healthy two year old and feel blessed I am able to have a second! Life is good at the minute!
The only reason I’m considering NIPT is because it’ll apply toward my deductible and once that’s met we’re only responsible for 10% of claims. I know that’s not great, but that’s what you have to deal with many of today’s insurance plans.

The wording "not accurate" is crap, but it's true that the way that screening tests are rated (rates of false positives and false negatives, etc.) are based on the expected and actual frequencies of the positive and negative results in the population. And only screening tests that are accurate to a certain degree are considered "valid" for different reasons. It;s likely it's not as reliable in people under 35, just based on the rates of false positives or negatives, which is why it's not recommended. Any screening test is the same way--not only is it financially (resource-wise) not "worth it" to screen people at a low risk, but if people are at a low risk the rates of false positives and negatives may actually outweigh the actual true positives, etc. potentially making it pretty worthless. (Sorry for the rant, I have a PhD in epidemiology, let me know if you have any questions on this type of stuff!)
Personally, I did not get the NIPT 2 years ago when I was <35; instead I had a different blood test with the NT scan. The NIPT was not covered then, and the test i had was covered. Now I'm over 35 and I had the NIPT and it's covered. Not sure what else changed in those 2 years though--it seems the NIPT is much more readily done (it's probably cheaper and easier now than it was) than it used to be.
@marimarii I was 30 for my first pregnancy and am 32 now and opted to do a NIPT both times. I paid out of pocket last time but have better insurance this time so it’s covered (not Kaiser). Kaiser is complicated in that you have to seriously advocate for yourself if you want to do anything beyond the basic/normal care. I used to be with them and I always had to push hard when I wanted extra care or to see a specialist. I’m not with them now, but that was my experience previously.
I turned 35 6 weeks after my due date last time and they didn't offer NIPT. I got the first trimester screen since I was "close" as they put it. If that had come back with reason for concern they would have done more tests, but fortunately it didn't so I don't know what those tests would have been.
Just got back from my NT scan. Everything looked good, very low risk. I’ll have 2nd tri bloodwork in a few weeks. I was hoping to schedule the anatomy scan but they won’t have that schedule up for a couple of weeks.
I was getting PGAL anxiety before the scan that they wouldn’t find a heartbeat. So happy to see a healthy looking baby in there! And it was fun to see that it really looks like a human now.

Had my second ultrasound today. Last weeks was cancelled since I had the flu, so waiting another week played on my anxiety but all was well! HB 175 and measuring 9wks2days, so right on target. I'll put the ultrasound photo in that thread.
All in all great apt.. this dr is super upbeat, telling me how second labour and delivery is so much easier. Not sure I buy that but I appreciate the optimism.
Next apt we'll have all the genetic blood screening done. That will be at 12 weeks, and dr told me it takes a week or so to get it back.
I’m doing the NIPT (panorama and harmony tests through Natera) and I’m in my late twenties. It wasn’t mentioned with my first pregnancy but that was when I was seeing a different doctor at the same practice. We opted in this time knowing that we’ll probably have to pay $200 OOP. I want the data! And finding out the sex is a nice perk, we’ll definitely want the extra couple of weeks to know if we need to budget for a mostly new baby wardrobe. We’ll reuse as much of DS’s clothes as we can but if it’s a girl then we’ll obviously be doing some shopping

@nackie he swore it was! He said second pregnancy and delivery tells you pretty much how any subsequent will be, and first is a complete outlier in terms of labor/delivery. He added the normal disclaimer that things can happen, but generally his rule was true.
DD was a forceps assisted birth and he also threw out statistics that made it seem like forceps were far more common than I thought they were. My birth class before DD mentioned them being a dying art that a lot of Drs aren't trained in extensively anymore.
@Lcardinal04 interesting. My mw said that second births are the fastest but then after that all bets are off and third/ fourth can be long and stubborn.
