Spectra pumps

I know there are a few of us that got spectra pumps. What settings have you found the most Effective? How often and for how long do you pump? How is everyone’s output coming along?

Re: Spectra pumps

  • I use out twice a day after a feeding. The massage seeing takes about a minute to get a let down them I just go to 54 and change the suction to comfort. Pumping takes about 10 minutes because I do it one breast at a time.   Yells about 4-5oz total. Always less on the breast just nursed on since he block feeds.
  • I pump 1x daily, but am trying to add in a second pump.  I end up pumping about a half hour after she finishes feeding as I need to keep her upright for 20-30min post feed to help with her frequent spit up/reflux issues. Tried pumping while holding her once - yeah, no go. She feeds from both breasts so I double pump. Massage mode at 70 for a minute or a minute and a half, then 38 until I hit 15 mins. If she is sleeping soundly, I may go for 20mins.  I’m pulling 6+oz (total) per pump session right now although I have seen an increase in my supply lately.

We started introducing bottles, so usually I put the milk from one breast into her bottle of choice for the day and then either freeze the other side or add it to the milk from the previous pump and freeze.

Really dislike that that half the pump adaptors for bottles that I have do not fit on the Spectra pump. But, I have a funnel. For now I pump into the bottles that came with the Spectra and then pour the milk into whichever bag/bottle I have lined up.

I got the freemie Spectra kit for when I go back to work but haven’t tried it yet.

  • The freemies sound so nice but they don't work for my line of work. There are bottle neck adapters on Amazon for wide neck bottles.  I usually pump in a storage bag and a bottle for the day. Right now he has only gotten 2 bottle feedings

Which storage bag are you using? I find that the Medela bags are SO off.

We can pump directly into the Avent bottles without an adapter. I also find it easier to read the output on those bottles than on the Spectra bottle.

I bought a manual Medela pump which came with a bunch of bottles.  I got these adapters (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01EUNA96W?colid=2Y0MBT6F0P3AA&coliid=I2PG1NB1BK54K3&ref=br_ADD_TO_CART_image_link) which allow me to pump into the Medela bottles.

I pump about 3-4 times a days. Now the LO is 9 weeks old, I usually only have to pump about 6-8 minutes per side. I get the most milk around 100am. We try to coordinate so DH gives LO a bottle at that time.

I leave the pump at 54 and the vacuum at 4. I sometimes need to reduce the vacuum though.
    DH & me - 31.

  • I have not actually tried my freemie cups yet, but I probably should before I go back to work. Figure out how to use them.

i somewhat gave up on pumping direct into the type of bottle my daughter likes. I now just pump into the Spectra bottles and then use a funnel to pour the milk into storage bags or bottles, depending on my need.
  • Has anyone tried the Kiinde Twist system? I am very intrigued by it.
  • I pump directly into Lanishoh bags or use the Spectra bottle, the bags fit just fine but need to make sure they are the direct pump type (with the white line). Sometimes I mix pumpings once cold so each bag has 6oz.  Amazon sells adapters to be able to pump into wide mouth bottles.
  • @curiousfool1 I haven’t used it but a good friend of mine does and she’s been pumping with that system for 4 months. She likes it, just had to pay attention that her good side doesn’t overfill a. Ag and May have to swap them during sessions

I pump into the spectra bottles and then just pour in the the ones we feed with. I also mix cold milk since I EP and keep a supply from the day in the fridge at all times. Since I get 7-11oz each session and he’s only eating 3, I keep larger bottles in the fridge to hold my surplus, then each morning i will freeze the previous days stash and start over

  • @curiousfool1 I'm using the Kiinde system and really like it. I like being able to pump directly into the bags. I had to buy the adapters for it to connect to my Medela, but it’s worked well. We’re also using the Kiinde bottle, which I love because the bag fits directly into the bottle frame for feeding. We’ve been using the Kiinde slow flow nipple and that has worked well, but I think you have the option of using other nipple brands using the same adapter pieces I mentioned for pumping.
  • I have a spectra but I haven’t sanitized yet! I’m staying home now but wanted her to get used to a bottle. That’s on my to do list this week but pumping makes me nervous. I wasn’tvery good at it without the first two!

  • I have both a Spectra S1 (picked out myself) and a Medela PISA (given to me by my SIL).  I have been using the Spectra for a while now, getting used to it as I plan to leave it at the office. I just started using the PISA yesterday. Man, the Spectra is so much better! Really unbelievable difference. The only feature of the PISA, though, that I wish the Spectra adopted is the automatic switch from massage mode to pump mode after 2min unless you manually switch earlier. I am terrible at remembering to switch from massage to pump!

But seriously, the quality difference is so great i’m Strongly considering shelling out to buy myself a second Spectra to keep at home I like it that much.
  • @curiousfool1 I agree! I had the PISA for my last baby and got the spectra this time. The spectra is much more comfortable and I get more output in less time than I did before. My DH even commented that it is much quieter too.
  • i pump randomly. but when i do its after the first feeding. i have it set to cycle 50, vacuum 4 on the first and cycle 70 vacuum 4 for the second (idr if its expression or letdown that comes first lol) i had it on vacuum 3 of the second but found i was getting more when i upped it. i also had to change flanges n went from a 24 to a 19. and get a ton more that way. i was getting 1-2oz in total to 5-7oz now!
  • 70 is the let down massage,  the 54 and lower is for expressing milk. I use ghee smaller flanges that came with it,  unsure if I should go smaller,  I always have to wore milk off my areolas, I also use freemie cups.
