Let's Talk About Food

Anyone want to share any fun, yummy or interesting cravings they have had? It would also be fun to share recipes or new ideas. Any good snacks to share that tide you over between meals?

Re: Let's Talk About Food

  • I have been a cereal eating machine which is strange because I never ate it prepregnancy. It’s not the super healthy kind either- lucky charms and fruit loops. Yum.

  • I’ve been making snack spreads that are so satisfying to me- sliced apple, slices of sharp cheddar, mixed nuts, olives, pickles, sliced avocado with salt, etc.

But I've mostly found that my cravings vary widely day to day - really getting a variety! IRL I have a sweet tooth and I have no wanted anything sweet- so strange!

  • Oddly I craved queso for a couple times, and also freshly squeezed OJ haha. Such a weird combo.

  • It’s so weird how things change. Avocado has been amazing lately. Had it 3-4 times this week already! Queso sounds amazing right now. Sadly we don’t have any, hubby is lactose intolerant argh.

  • Yes on the cereal @Holls214!  I never ate cereal until I started my retrievals and then I would take a break and now I have it at night.  I have been into mini wheats and special k vanilla but I love fruit loops!

I feel like I was in survival mode until 16 weeks, so now at 20 I can finally enjoy food again and I am going to turn into a bagel and cream cheese.  Although panera's listeria scare kind of has me off of them at the moment even though I mostly get them at a local shop.  I also am drinking glasses of milk which I NEVER drank before, like ever.  I have been back to eating pretty healthy andI can't get enough fruit, grilled cheese sandwiches and OJ like @helloworld9.  Queso actually sounds really good.  And so do fries.  I could go for some with ranch right about now.
  • I think the thing with the cereal is the milk too! I might have to get a good bagel tomorrow. Sounds lovely.
I love French fries all the time especially with ranch. We have a burger place in downtown Portland with truffle fries that I have been craving like mad.

yes, I think I for sure have a thing for dairy (milk, cream cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese, regular cheese) and it is helping with the heartburn and I kind of get a weird empty stomach feeling at night before bed, so my night time cereal or bagel isn't probably the healthiest thing but I don't care, I can sleep better right now.  ooo yes to a burger and fries!  not pregnant I love that and couldn't eat one until a few weeks ago, it was amazing!
  • I also get that feeling... sometimes im good and eat a little cutie orange or 2 but then cereal or tonight a pudding cup. Haha. Yeah I agree about not being able to eat things until lately or having anything sound good. I think the past month has been totally different than the first trimester.

  • Great snack choices!

I have been consuming dairy products like crazy. My favorite right now is Icelandic yogurt (skyr). It’s high in protein and low in sugar, perfect for someone like me with gestational diabetes.

If I didn’t have GD, I’d be stuffing my face with pineapple buns. I’m also craving King’s Hawaiian rolls.

  • @lablover78 Same here. Huge sweet tooth, huge chocolate lover, and I've not been remotely interested in sugar lately. Now carbs... carbs are a different story :) And pineapple and grapes, and I had some orange juice yesterday morning that tasted like the nectar of the gods. Clearly I am a fruit fanatic at the moment.
  • It seems I have been craving the color orange - carrots, clementines...omg, give me ALL the clementines, peppers, and cheetos have been the one oddish craving I've had. I ended up buying a bunch of the little snack bags of them so I'm not tempted to eat the entire big bag in one sitting. I still can't stand ground beef. I can handle and cook with it just fine, but once cooked, ick, I just can't do it. I was craving spaghetti and meatballs the other night but once the meatballs were cooked, I couldn't even stand the smell of them!
  • @mtpbadger I feel the same about ground turkey as you do ground beef.  I used to love it and eat it all the time.  Now I can barely stand the sight of it, it completely grosses me out.  Which is weird, because ground beef it still fine by me. Its so odd.

I haven't really had any strange cravings.  Other than carbs and sweets, but I've always loved those so that isn't new.

I'm a little jealous of everyone and their orange juice.  Just looking at it gives me heartburn.   :/
  • @MMD1986 I can't do orange juice either. Every time I try...it just doesn't sit well. But clementines I can eat and eat and eat. Go figure.
  • Same with me and orange juice... but yes to clementines or oranges. Strange.

  • I can't eat fish and I love fish.  We would probably eat fish twice a week before I was pregnant.  Now the smell and even thought of it makes me ill.  Such a bummer.

I'm having a hard time with meat as well.  Made some burgers at home and I literally almost went to stay with my mom because the smell made me so sick for days.  Keep up all the dairy ladies!  My OB says calcium is important and (2) servings a day of dairy in second trimester is recommended.

I have gestational diabetes as well and I usually love cheese.  This last week or 2 I can barely stand it, I think I might finally have gotten sick of it and that is amazing. I have never in my life not wanted cheese.

@sarcasticowl haha nectar of the gods indeed!  I got these rediculously expensive blood oranges at whole foods yesterday and they are so amazing tasting.  I have liked oranges before but never that much.

@cashewchicken fellow GD lady here....have you tried italian pizzelle cookies? They have some chocolate ones at whole foods that are amazing. And I think world market carries too, prob Central market too. (6) of them is only 16 carbs so a little peanut butter or cheese or something with protein and you have a decent snack which involves cookies!!
  • @hottietoddy pizzelle cookies looks delicious! Thanks for your suggestion, I’ll definitely go look for it at Whole Foods this weekend.

  • First trimester fruit And cream cheese or cottage on a bagel with pickles I could manage.  Any source of meat or fish protein was out!!

now I can finally eat other things!  I will say I was all about the chips and salsa I didn't have such a sweet tooth but these last couple of weeks I'm like yum!!

dunkin donuts makes this brownie filled donut for vday which is the only donut I ever like and they only make it this time of year....and apparently I still enjoy them.  It's hilarious that my family knows this and everyone bought me some this week so I'm on sweets overload for sure!!!

coffee smell finally has stopped making me want to hurl so wondering if I'll be able to try a cup soon!!

  • When did everyone start getting cravings? I've always had random cravings so there hasn't been anything that stands out to me. I'm 17w today.

First trimester I ate a ton of snacks! I had sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chocolate, fruit (grapes, bananas, clementines, kiwis), cheese, and anything to help with constipation (beans, avocados, more fruit like  prunes, yogurt). Ginger ale was my best friend. I couldn't eat apples though -- they started tasting weird. Second trimester I've been eating Activia yogurt almost daily to prevent constipation, but if I eat it early morning, then I'm starving in an hour. I'm loving hot sandwiches with salty chips. I really wish I could have sunny side eggs again with runny yolk!! I miss that.
  • I saw I, Tonya last night and went on a cereal shopping spree today :) they eat so much cereal in the movie.

  • Anyone else have days were you are a bottomless pit? Today is one of those. Most days I eat my couple meals and a snack but I think I have eaten all day today haha.
Banana, Nutragrain bar, half a pita sandwich, cup of soup, scoop of potato salad, pirates booty, half a donut and it’s not even dinner time. Oh vey.

  • It really is crazy how each day is different. Maybe the super hungry days are growth spurt days? Finished off the day with fajitas and a Costco very berry sundae. ;)

  • @SP128 yeah there aren’t that many snack options besides cheese and fruit, yogurt and veggie sticks. Oh and cheese and crackers too. I’ve been eating Pocky sticks too (family pack) as an individual packet contains about 13g carbs. Satisfies my chocolate craving.

@Holls214 miss those days when I used to be a bottomless pit. People used to call me hollow leg. Gestational diabetes ruined it for me. :( Though I’ve got to say I kind of snacked on cheese and fruits all day today.  But calories wise probably wasn’t much.

  • @holls214 yup, I have days like that where no matter what I'm eating, I'm hungry 5 minutes later. The worst is when I didn't bring enough snacks to work and I've gone through everything I brought!
  • @Holls214 LOL yes. Cookies, fruit, bowl of spaghetti with meatballs, potato chips... I argue with DH about my bag of chips at least once a week. Hopefully it's a growth spurt!
  • I'm still riding the bagel & cream cheese train, but I'm trying to just do half at a time.  I woke up wanting pancakes and fruit so we're off the find some brunch after the driveway is plowed!
  • @aera11 mmmmm pancakes sound so good right now!

Hi again!   fellow Gestational Diabetes ladies, I have another food that I have been loving.  It is the morning star meat free spicy sausage or regular sausage patties.  I have 3 every morning and they are super high protein and low enough carb where I can have (3) slices of wheat toast and butter as well!  I ran out today and I had quiche instead and I noticed I got dizzy earlier after breakfast.  I have had a hard time with meat lately and this is a great way to get protein without having to deal with meat.
  • They were amazing @mtpbadger!  I also had an over priced fresh squeezed oj & it was amazing.  Now I'm working from bed downing yogurt covered raisins.  I think since I started getting sick again over the last week I've been snacking more to fill that empty stomach feeling after puking
  • Mmmmm now I’m thinking about pancakes and yogurt covered pretzels. Yum yum.

I also did a bit of reading on what twin moms are supposed to eat/gain, and OMG. I'm in trouble if both of these little beans stick around.
