AMA Check in 1/28

edited January 2018 in September 2018 Moms
I didn't see this one started any where. Is it cool if I start it? I'm not really familiar with the format you all use so I'll be winging it a little. Feel free to hit me with some critiques if I don't get it quite right.

The advanced maternal age thread is for all us 35+ aged like fine wine mamas.

How many times have you made it around the sun?
How far along are you?
Any upcoming appointments?
Any current thoughts or concerns related to an AMA pregnancy?
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life and it would magically provide all the nutrition you need and help you maintain a healthy weight, what would you choose?

39 years old & 5 ish weeks pregnant (I was 36 with baby number 1)
I have another blood draw tomorrow to check how/if baby's growing and I don't really have any concerns at this time about how things are going.

If I could only have one food  for the rest of my life, I think it'd be pizza. It's not a terribly unique or worldly answer I know, but I freaking love pizza.

Hi! I’m 35, and 8.5 weeks! I had my first appt and blood work last week. My next official appt is in 4 weeks (anatomy scan I think?) but I’m supposed to go in two weeks for the blood tests for genetic testing. The np made me kind of nervous, just in the way she spoke about everything. She prefaced everything with “since you’re 35”. Like, hi, I know :)

Aaand literally just bread. It’s all I want. Bagels, and soft pretzels. I could live on soft pretzels.

    @ashh2018

    Mmmm...bread.... Yum!

The anatomy scan is done around 20 weeks. I think the 12 week check up is more of a hi/bye quickie. Bloodwork if you need it, listen for baby's heartbeat and that's probably about it. You'll have way more super boring check ups than exciting ones. Although I always thought it was neat to hear baby's heartbeat :)

Yeah, the hearing how old you are thing gets real old, real quick. It's good they are looking out for us though.

Donuts. All the donuts. They are my weakness.

I'm 36, turning 37 in just over a month.  I'm 8 weeks along, first appointment isn't until next Monday.  I think this whole thing will feel more real once I get my first ultrasound then.

Last time around, I snuck in just before the AMA label.  My son's due date was 6 weeks before I hit 35.  I'm curious to see what's different this time around, but not too anxious yet.  At least not about my age :)

My one food would probably be chocolate covered strawberries.

Any current thoughts or concerns related to an AMA pregnancy?  RE not sure if pregnancy will develop appropriately.  So far we have seen the heartbeat twice.

@nackie my first was due about 10 weeks before I turned 35...one of my best friend's is "my age" and had a baby due the "same time" but it happened to be about 10 weeks AFTER she turned 35. We had a ton of laughs about how she was "AMA" and I wasn't. We had different ob's, so that's a lot of difference right there, but otherwise the main difference seemed to be that stuff was presented as "optional" to me was "recommended or required" for her.

37 (will be 38 when this baby is born)

    How far along are you?
    ~ 8 weeks

    Any upcoming appointments?
    My first appointment is 2/2

Any current thoughts or concerns related to an AMA pregnancy?
This will be my second AMA pregnancy (I had our youngest when I was 35/36).  I don't really have any concerns about the ins and outs of the pregnancy itself, but I do have a healthy level of concern about genetic disorders etc..  We've had some insurance changes since my last pregnancy, but I'm hoping that it will still cover/mostly cover NIPT - it was a relief to lay those kind of worries to rest early on last time.

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life and it would magically provide all the nutrition you need and help you maintain a healthy weight, what would you choose?
I agree with @ashh2018 completely.  I could happily live off bread alone most days of the week.

How many times have you made it around the sun?  37, but I'll be 38 in August!

How far along are you? 6 + 1...I think

Any upcoming appointments? My 1st appointment is on 2/13, but my good friend (who happens to do the ultrasounds at my dr office) wants me to try to come in the week before since she will be on vacation the day of my appointment.  If I can get a little reassurance the week before my regular appointment, I'm game!

Any current thoughts or concerns related to an AMA pregnancy?  Nothing that has to do with age, per se, just general pregnancy worries...sustainability, health of the baby, recovery after birth, etc

If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life and it would magically provide all the nutrition you need and help you maintain a healthy weight, what would you choose?  Oh man, I just love food...I can't narrow it down to one thing.  Give me all the fried chicken, Korean, Vietnamese, sushi and pizza...

34, but will be 35 in May and so, technically, I’m AMA

    How far along are you?
    9 weeks today

    Any upcoming appointments?
NT Scan u/s and blood work on 2/23

Any current thoughts or concerns related to an AMA pregnancy?
Nope. I had my first OB appointment last Friday and she presented me with all of the changes because I’m now considered AMA. My OB said that based on my recent history of healthy pregnancies (two kids in the last 4 years), she’s still only recommending the usual AMA requirements. So that was good to hear.

Great question. Probably pizza. Only because you can always switch up the kind of pizza.

How far along are you? 8 and 2 days
Any upcoming appointments? Friday - my first
Any current thoughts or concerns related to an AMA pregnancy? I don't want all the extra testing...  I'd rather find out a birth if something is special...  And I don't want to worry as some of it isn't 100%.  aAlso, each pregnancy seems to hit me harder than the last...  but thankfully my biggest girl has been a HUGE help.
If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life and it would magically provide all the nutrition you need and help you maintain a healthy weight, what would you choose?  I like too much variety to pick.

@arcticseal-2 I believe you can refuse extra testing. The doc might give you a hard time about it but I'm pretty sure they can't make you take tests or do procedures that you don't want.

I'm good with some of the extra tests, but did decline the extra ultrasounds last pregnancy. I felt that if they didn't know how old I was and only based off how my pregnancy was going they weren't necessary.

@mdexter11 I've only had AMA pregnancies so I'm not sure what the differences are exactly. Mostly I think it's that insurance will pay for more stuff for us ;) We are offered more ultrasounds and genetic testing tends to be covered. There's been some nice advances with non invasive testing and tests like Panorama are pretty cool. A fringe benefit of a test like Panorama is that if you want to know the sex of your baby you can find out between 9&13 weeks. I personally wanted to know so it was fun for me to know so early.
My last pregnancy was mostly handled by my regular obgyn except for the big mid pregnancy anatomy scan. That she wanted me to see a perinatologist for. Since there was nothing abnormal with my scan that was the only time I saw a specialist.

Saw the doc on Tuesday. I need to choose between going for full genetic workup with blood tests, meeting with a geneticist, and ultrasound(7-10 days for results) or the Maternity21/(edit-Panorama. No idea where I got Periscope)  blood test that could be done in office and also takes 7-10 days to get results.

    Anyone with experience and/or insight?

@episcowitch, with my last pregnancy, I met with an MFM, had an ultrasound, blood work, and also some variation of the NIPT test (my insurance covered all of it because of my age).  Based on the ultrasound alone, the MFM was able to virtually rule out neural tube and heart defects at the appointment, but with other genetic disorders, we had to wait for the NIPT results to come back to see what our risk was.  We had the ultrasound and NIPT done closer to 12/13 weeks, so that might have impacted what the MFM was able to tell us at that time.  FWIW, the radiologist seemed pretty certain of the sex at the appointment too, but I chose not to find out then since my DH wasn't there (just waited for the NIPT results).

I did the Panorama non invasive testing. I liked it. They took some blood, sent it off, called me with normal results, told me the sex of the baby and then I didn't need any further screening until the regular  anatomy scan at 20 weeks. Because I was AMA I did have my anatomy scan with a MFM. I was actually a little pissed at his approach. He did the ultrasound. Sent us to a room to wait. Came in started telling us about all the things that could go wrong because I'm old... Then he's all, yeah, none of that applies to you. You and the baby are fine. Asshat! Lead with that! Start with "everything's fine" then go to town telling me what could have been wrong but isn't. Geez.

I’m supposed to choose between the Panorama testing, or what they keep calling the “state” testing. From what I can tell, the main difference is that panorama is like 1% more accurate and results come in sooner. I think the only reason my doc offers both is that Panorana isn’t covered by everyone’s insurance. It is by mine luckily so I’m going with that. Anyone, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on the difference - I’m tbh still pretty confused.

@stothi My mw does all the us in house. We only see a specialist if we elect to or something is hinky with the panorama.

I call tomorrow to set up whatever I choose. I think I going to stay away from specialists unless it becomes necessary.

No, I feel fortunate to get the extra care and attention.
