In-Laws

First time mom here! Let me start with, I love my In-Laws, they are really great people. But, I am already having anxiety about them holding the baby when he is born since they are smokers. It's probably a silly thing to worry about, but for some reason, it has been on my mind for the last couple weeks. I know second and third hand smoke increases the risk of SIDS, so I am wondering what you guys do when there are smokers in the family.

Hi Knottie! Welcome to the April BMB. It may be helpful for us to get to know you better if you log into The Knot and change your name to something more recognizable. You may have to log out of TB and log back in again before your name change. Also, I would encourage you to read the thread posted at the top of the board that says "read this first". We try to keep the board organized as much as possible and one off threads like this are typically discouraged. You could have posted this question in the randoms thread or the questions thread. I don't have any smokers in my family so unfortunately I don't have a lot of advice for you but I think it's completely reasonable to ask that no one actually smokes around your baby. There probably isn't much they can do about the smell on their clothes but I'm sure everything will be fine if the baby is not exposed for a long period of time.

  • My FIL is a huge smoker and it honestly drives me crazy anytime he was around my DD as a baby
  • My mother is a smoker. She offered to change her shirt after smoking when she visited. She also scrubbed her hands raw. Honestly, she doesn't even really like to hold newborns so it was nbd. But I appreciated the gestures. If we lived closer I may have been more worried about it but we see her about 3 times a year.
