Pregnant with Mirena!

( Duplicate post from high risk) Long post ahead.. I’ve been a lurker since my first pregnancy (this is #3). I’ve never felt the need to post, but this time is different. I had my Mirena put in about a year  and 1/2 ago after I had my second child. Everything was fine... until I started having symptoms that I kept blaming on other things (denial is a strong force, let me tell you). I finally broke down and took a test just to ease my mind. BFP! Got into the doctor and found out I was already 9 weeks. (Now, almost 12) The IUD is in my cervix and my doc, whom I love and trust, decided to leave it in place because of the risk of miscarriage when removed... but leaving it in can also result in miscarriage later on. It feels like a catch 22. I’m so frustrated and scared. Does anyone have any experience with this? Any success stories? Thanks!

Re: Pregnant with Mirena!

  • I do not, and wish I had some words of wisdom to share.  Is it risky because you are farther along already?  Could it possibly cause issues with growth around it/infection?  I'm interested to "hear" other people's responses because this seems like quite the conundrum.  Regardless, congrats on #3!

  • From googling this it looks like IUDs should be removed before 12 weeks and the miscarriage rate if not removing them is quite high. I would get a second opinion.
  • no experience but sending you hugs and I always think getting a second opinion is not a bad idea when it comes to serious situations.

  • I’ve heard of someone getting pregnant and having a full term pregnancy with the IUD still in the uterus (one of those I didn’t know I was pregnant stories). That being said, the cervix sounds like a much riskier place to carry to full term- does she think it will come out on its own? I would really consider getting a second opinion.
  • I also suggest getting a second opinion! I’ve never heard of this before but good luck to you!
  • Second and third opinions. Best of luck!

My aunt got pregnant with an iud in and carried to term but I believe she was high risk the whole time and they closely monitored the device the whole time to make sure it didn’t move and puncture the sac or anything.

    Edited- wrong word
  • I agree with getting a second opinion, you can't be too cautious in this situation. I'm sorry you are dealing with this.
  • Wow, I am so sorry you are in this situation. I agree with what most others have said-I think a second opinion will make you feel better about making any decision.

  • Thank you all for your support. I am actively looking to get a second opinion. As of right now, the practices I have contacted won’t take me because I’m already an established patient elsewhere. That makes no sense to me. I may have to go into Mama Bear mode to get in, but I will keep trying. I also have an appointment on Monday. I’ll talk to him about my concerns and fears. I’ve been dealing with anxiety for years... this situation is not helping.
  • There was someone on my 2013 BMB who found out she was 30 weeks pregnant and also had Mirena. Her baby is now 4.5 :). I hope everything works out for you - keep us posted.
  • I’m glad you at least got someone to talk to you! Hopefully your anxiety is eased a little bit and your appointment on Monday goes well!
  • @LaurenRiv I’m so sorry you are dealing with this. I am happy you were able to get reassurance trough other clinics though. Keep us updated on Monday’s appointment I hope it goes well

Tiny update: I called more practices today (as much as I could with a 4 yr old and 18 mo old running around). I still haven’t found a practice that will take me. Ridiculous. But I did have a few that would talk with me. They all agreed with my doctor that they would leave it in place. This gave me a bit of comfort to have some confirmation. I have another appt on Monday. I will update again then. Thanks again for your words of encouragement. It has helped a lot.
Very happy that you got encouraging words! Keep us updated on your pregnancy! ❤️
  • Update: When it rains, it pours! I got a call from my doctor today before my appointment. He informed me that my genetic testing came back and it shows a 56% chance of Down Syndrome. However, the test only consisted of 2% fetal DNA and the test is supposed to have at least 4%. I don’t know how much that matters. I went in and had the NT ultrasound. Everything was completely fine. We go on Wednesday to meet with the high risk doctor. My gut is telling me that everything is OK. Even if there is something wrong, it doesn’t matter. As long as we make it and bring home a healthy baby, it’ll be alright.... the whole IUD thing has now moved down the list of things I’m worried about. I’ll let you know how the appointment goes on Wednesday. You’re prayers for peace are appreciated.
  • Thinking of you @laurenriv! I hope thing settle down soon and you get some good news  <3
