and if so, what items? I've gotten a ton of stuff but I hate the cutesy fabric on the car seat and bouncer seat. I've found a ton of car seat covers ($$$) but none on bouncy seat covers. what are you using that you can't stand? what's your solution?
I certainly hope so... most of my friends have great taste though so I'm not worried about disliking anything. And if I don't love it, I just will refuse it or say I already have one picked out etc.
My cousins have offered but I haven't taken them up on anything. This is going to be my one and only so I kind of want to pick out my own things, all new.
We haven't received any hand-me-downs (at least not yet). Someone posted in a thread the other day though, that using a fabric cover for a carseat can void the warranty. Not sure who it was, and not sure if it's true or not, but just something to think about.
And what would a warranty for a car seat really cover, anyway? (Obviously thinking "out lout")
I got almost everything Hand me down from a co-worker for DD#1 (not really clothes, but all the other baby stuff). I really appreciated it because I was SAH & DH didn't make much $$ at the time--it worked out well...after DD#1, I passed the stuff on to needy mothers..I had ttc for over a year & was sick of looking at it. Then I got pregnant--LOL! For DD#2 I bought most everything new except clothing from DD#1.

I personally love hand me downs- as long as things were taken care or. My only rules on new stuff, was 1) A new carseat and 2) A new crib 3) New bottles and Pacie's
I got a bouncy seat (the fisher price aquarium pattern) from a thrift store the other day. It was $4.97. I took it home, washed it and put batteries in it and it looks brand new. I was pretty proud of that purchase- LoL. I have got a lot of clothes and a few blankets from the local thrift stores. I say- as long as things are taken care of and are washable- go for it!
I got a ton with DD. And as for the bouncy seat, I just dealt. It was a yellow flowered number and well, it worked for the 5-6 months I used it. It wasn't around long enough for me to strain my brain trying to think of another cover.
But for an option, try checking the mftr's website -- oftentimes, they sell replacement covers etc for existing products and the new version might be preferable.
As much as I can, but it's hard since all my IRL mommy-friends / family have boys. I'm still getting a bunch of stuff from my sister (my nephew will be 3) and a couple friends that are gender neutral and/or things that I don't care about the colors/theme. My daughter will still be wearing her cousin's clothes whether they're boy-ish or not.
Though, a lot of my friends/family are thrilled to be getting the first girl around in years, so they're shopping-happy.
My mom saved a bunch of my baby clothes that she is passing on to me I don't know what exactly she has, I'll get it when I go home to visit in February - but I'm excited to put my daughter in some of the outfits my mom used to dress me in.
We've gotten an entire furniture set and a rocker, as well as offers for both boy and girl clothes, strollers, high chair, swing, etc. I think our approach will be to keep as primary the stuff we like or can change up a little (the furniture and rocker) and will use other stuff as back-up or park it elsewhere, like my mom's house, so we don't have to cart a load of stuff every time we go there.
if you dont like the fabric and cant find anything to cover it, i would suggest using the one you dont like as an "extra" bouncy, maybe to keep it at grammas for when you visit so you dont have to lug one around, and pick out one you like yourself or ask for one on your registry if you have one, that way you are still putting it to good use, but you just dont have to look at it all the time!
I wish I was getting hand-me-downs! We were pretty much the first in our group of friends/family to have a baby, so we bought everything on our own. At least we'll get to pass the bigger items down to our next baby--which is why we picked neutral stuff.
I am getting tons- and I'm so greatful! Luckily- DH's cousin just had a baby 9mos ago and we're inheriting everything as she grows out of it. (Both girls-clothes, bouncers, swings, etc)
We also chose the same themes (Fisher Price Rainforest.) So everything we're being given is exactly what we would have registered for. However, a friend of mine did give me several items that are outdated and just plain ugly. I'm leaving those at my parents house.. and the ugly car seat is going in my Dad's truck so we don't have to worry about transferring a seat everytime they pick her up or bring her home...plus he doesn't care what it looks like!

If we have a girl I'm sure SIL will hand down some of her stuff (her daughter will be about 6 months when Cupcake is born). Probably mostly clothes and such, because everything else she'll either still be using or I'm not interested in. If we have a boy I don't foresee getting anything from her (all her stuff is girly), and we don't have any other friends/family with baby stuff to donate. Well, my parents still have some of my old stuff, but that's not quite the same. SIL did mention we could borrow their bassinet (all white, so gender neutral) if we wanted for the first few months, but I don't really count that because we'd be returning it to them once Cupcake moved to his/her crib.?
I don't think I'd use anything I truly couldn't stand. Unless it was a really high quality product that was just ugly, or I was really financially hard-up, I'd rather spend a little money and get what I really like.?

Yes, and I'm so grateful. It's been one of the biggest advantages of being the last of your friends to have a baby. We've been given 2 swings, a stroller, clothes, baby gates. Another friend just volunteered her crib. If it's standard size so I can buy a new mattress I'm going to take her up on it.

Really the only thing I wanted new was car seats.
