Massages and pregnancy off limits? What else? **UPDATE**

**UPDATE**
So I had my first OB appointment today and the doctor said no massages until the second tri due to miscarriage risk. Not something I knew, and I think it is debatable, but I wanted to update and post the newest information I received.

So yesterday I took off from work and made an appointment for a 90-minute Swedish massage. Ironically, my sister gave me the gift certificate as a thank you for sending her a bunch of maternity clothes, lol. Anyhow they asked if I was pg, I said yes, and the spa said they will not do massages in the first tri. After a bit of googling, I saw that massage as causing m/c is a myth, but they still said no way. So I left and got a pedicure elsewhere, but it was not that great :(

Anyways, has anyone been told by a medical professional that massage is off limits?

What other common activities might we need to ask our dr.'s about, to either dispel myths/worry, or be safe by not doing them?  (I type this as I'm drinking a big cup of coffee, but my OB told me last time 8 oz a day is fine, so I'm going to continue.)

  • A massage isn’t off limits; the Masseuse should be certified in giving prenatal massages tho! There are even massage tables with the belly cut out for the bump! I can’t wait!

  • I got massages all through my last pregnancy even in the first trimester.

Yes, what Lanie said above. The same advice is true for pedicures- there are certain adjustments that need to be made so it doesn’t stimulate contractions.

Also, make sure you mention it to your dentist if you will need any dental work done. They’ll give you a different pain med that won’t affect LO.
  • Everywhere I’ve gone won’t do first trimester massages. I think even though they might not cause them, so many early MCs are unknown so they don’t want people blaming them. Huge liability. But I have recently read that the massage may cause fluid movement that’s not conducive to pregnancy. I got a bunch of massages my first pregnancy, in my second and third trimesters. Soon you’ll be in your second!

Other than that, the only big things I’m avoiding this time around are obviously alcohol and then cold cuts or questionable leftovers. The first time I had checked all my products and know they’re safe so there isn’t too much to worry about. I remember the first time finding out I was pregnant before dinner like oh no what am I going to eat for dinner!
  • Some spas won't do facials on pregnant women. Your skin changes and reacts differently to things when you're pregnant, so some people don't want to do them and be responsible if something happens. Melasma apparently also tends to pop up more if you get microdermabrasian. I haven't researched it yet, but that's what my aesthetician claims.
  • I think it’s more the liability for them than actual risk. In a healthy pregnancy, you just need to avoid alcohol, smoking, some medications, and stay under the caffeine limit. Most other limits are an abundance of caution and a matter of your comfort level. Pregnant women are more prone to injury in general, so there’s that, too.

  • A few things that I was told to avoid during pregnancy that I didn't expect are skin products that have retinol in them and at-home teeth whitening kits.

OMG last time I was pregnant, I stubbed my toenail and it actually fell off! It was more devastating to me than the idea of giving birth hahahaha but in case you’re wondering it just morphed back on as a thin layer and I was better in no time (maybe also thanks to pregnancy)!

Ahhhahah! Last week I was checking in and tucking in my sleeping kids and leaving one room stubbed my pinky and ‘ring’ toes of my left foot on his bed. It huuuuurt even bled a little kept me up all night. Now it’s still black and the toenail is basically gone. I’ve lost toenails a few times anyhow from running but never my pinky toe lol

  • @pghctwife did you manage to keep the what I can only imagine excruciating pain in without waking up the kids? If so you are super mom. It's hard not to scream like a banshee when your throbbing and limping around.

  • @brzvice ha!!! I think I did the under your breath cursing and hopping around. It was the kind of pain where if you’re a baby or kid you do a silent cry first anyhow hahaha

  • Save all the massages for the 3rd tri and then get them all the dang time, cause you'll need/want them!
  • I checked with my doctor and if anyone uses SeneGence Color Correcting Tinted Moisturizer they said no go because of the retinol/vitamin a in it ☹️

So this is 100% shameless on my part, but I want a massage when I can lie flat on my stomach, lol. I did some prenatal massages at the end, and they were nice and all, but not as nice as just laying down flat and have someone work out all the stress in your back!

  • ^^^ I went and got one last pregnancy and the lady had one of those pillows with a hole so I could lie on my stomach. It was glorious.
