How are doing with your Prenatals?

I am not doing to well with taken them regularly.  I have missed some days, because I am trying to avoid feeling nauseous. I know I need to take them. UGH How are you ladies doing with taking everyday?

Re: How are doing with your Prenatals?

  • I actually take them three times a day, which hasn’t been easy, but I set a reminder on my phone, and on days I work I pack and take them with me.

  • I think I’m going to set an alarm on my phone. I know I forgot yesterday.
  • I take them right before going to bed when I brush my teeth. I have found that they are less hard on my stomach when I am in sleeping.
  • I take mine after I eat lunch because they make me sick if I take them in the morning. Plus they give me a slight energy boost in the afternoon when I need it most. I would say I miss a day or two a week though but I'm getting better.

  • Ditto taking them at night. I have them out right next to my toothbrush so I won't forget.

  • I take mine every day with dinner. They are chewables and are kind of like a yummy post-dinner dessert (although lately I have also been having actual dessert also lol).

  • @southerngirlinwi and @mrsbubbles-2 I’m with you on taking them at bedtime for the same reason! Also in WI - hi!

i haven’t switched to a prenatal yet - I’m still doing multi with folic acid supplement for some other health reasons that have since resolved, but I just ordered those rainbowlight ones with Dha from amazon and hey should be coming next week I think (subscribe and save)

  • I take mine at night before bed - it's a natural, organic one.  In my first pregnancy, I took gummy vitamins LOL
  • I got some gummy ones to try since the regular ones are making me sick at the moment. I also have tried taking them right after dinner or right before bed, or splitting the big pill in two and taking a half twice a day. Mostly doing well taking them daily, though.
  • Just be careful if you're taking a gummy that it has iron in it.  A lot of them don't and the iron is needed.  I take the Rainbow Lights someone else mentioned above.  I take them right before bed.  Probably 75%ish of the time, about like I did last time.

Ehh, a lot of people get plenty of iron in their diet. Iron is constipating, so I specifically picked one that is low in iron (still has it, though). A lot of OBs say it doesn’t matter unless you are anemic. My OB just emphasized having enough folic acid and iodine.

  • I have to take mine twice a day (prenatals, folate supplement, baby aspirin, and a DHA), so I space them out. Blah. I try to take them with breakfast (or lunch) and dinner--I find it's not so bad if I'm eating something at the same time. If not, I tend to gag because of the flavor.
  • The ones I got with methylated folate, more absorbable than regular folic acid, which something like 50-60% of the population is genetically unable to break down into a usable form (MTHFR) . But I'm supposed to take 8 a day, lolno. I'm lucky to get 6 a day, 2 with each meal, which I figured is better than nothing.
  • I'm guilty here for not taking them regularly due to nausea. However the nausea and fatigue would probably be much better if I did take them regularly. I dry heave thinking of them and have puked them up many times. I may need to look into a gummy variety, it has to be better than nothing until the nausea subsides.

  • I took Rainbow Light and some other algae-based DHA with my first (I was a vegetarian then). I'm just taking gummy prenatals now. I'm going to take them to my doctor when I go but I am sure they are fine. I take them every night.
  • I'm pretty good about taking mine. I take it in the morning after breakfast, right when I brush my teeth. I do use one of those pill cases so I know if I've forgotten or not and I can then take it at night if that is the case. They don't bother me at all and I really should just keep taking them forever because why not? I"m not sure why I stopped taking them after DS was born.

  • I take mine in the morning with my probiotic and Claritin. I buy Spring Valley prenatals with DHA that aren’t as big as others, and thus easier to take. I also use a pill keeper so I can tell which days I take them and which days I forget.
  • I’m also taking prometrium in the first tri to help avoid mc, and funny how that makes it easy to remember lol. I have a bunch of supplements I’m on, and I take them all at once. Usually lunchtime, sometimes later.

Also on one with methylfolate plus extra methylfolate, b complex, omega 3, baby aspirin, vit d, and a probiotic.

  • My OB said that as long as I am eating a balanced diet I don't need to, so I don't. I might get one once a week if I don't think I did well with my diet or I'm feeling really run down.

  • Maybe I will try gummie ones O was concerned they didn’t have enough of the nutrients. Just thinking about taking mine makes me want to gag.
  • I generally eat pretty well as far as vitamins/minerals are concerned. I still try to take an OTC prenatal every morning (I forget maybe twice a week). I keep gummies at work for the days I forget to take them at home, and I try to keep a small baggie in my purse in case I forget when I'm on the go. I totally agree with you and your doc, @princesslockness, I'm just a huge worrier, and taking them makes me feel better.

  • I use garden of life, an organic/non GMO brand. It also has a stomach soothing blend in it (ginger, peppermint and something else). I used them during my last pregnancy and now this time too. With my 1st pregnancy (11 years ago) I took regular ones and I was SO sick- who knows maybe no correlation but these seem to be easier to digest.
  • I also take Garden of Life because it has folate rather than just folic acid (which is supposedly important when your AMA). I just read the bottle this morning that I’m supposed to take them 3x day! I take it once in the morning right now but I will be speaking to a PA after my ultrasound today and I’m going to ask her about that.

  • I use the gummy ones from Target.  I could never take the ones in pill form that my OB prescribed.  They were HUGE.

  • I had to switch to gummies because my others were making me sick. I have to choke down the gunmies. I try to take with breakfast, lunch, and dinner (1 each time) but I usually forget once. I’m being pretty awful about it this time, but I’ve been more sick. They don’t have iron, but my iron was okay-I talked to my OB about it.
  • I take gummies too.  My doctor told me it was fine during my first pregnancy, so hopefully they say the same this time when I have my first appointment.
  • I take gummies too. They're the only ones I can handle. I take Spring Valley prenatal gummies; 2 gummies, once a day. My ob told me that was perfectly fine.

I use those, too. I take them 3x a day. No need to ask. Follow the label.

  • I highly recommend (again) looking up your PNV on labdoor.com. Some of them are not accurately labeled, especially the gummies.

  • @lalala2004 The prenatal I’ve been taking isn’t on there. Not sure what that means. I take Smarty Pants prenatal, because my friends dr recommended it to her & I’m able to keep it down.
  • Thank you for sharing about garden of life! I’m going to check them out especially if they have tummy soothing! Anything to help with nausea.
  • I take gummy vitamins and am fairly good about taking them now, although I forgot quite often in the few months before I got pregnant (I was still taking them from my last pregnancy). My OB told me it was ok to skip the iron the first go-around since I suck at taking pills, but then I was borderline anemic so now I take bariatric iron which is chewable and does a slow release which is much easier on my stomach. I have a lot of constipation issues normally and these don't aggravate it. So for anyone with trouble taking pills or getting upset stomachs - try gummies and ask your doc about a slow release iron.
  • @lalala2004 thanks for that website. I didn’t know about it and my gummies aren’t great. I have my first midwife appointment next week so I’ll talk to her about what I should take. Hopefully the MS subsides soon and I can just take a pill again. I want to look into those garden of life ones.

It just means they haven’t tested it. In the end, more than likely we get what we need from our diet, I just personally like to get what I pay for!

I actually order the ones you recommended yesterday because I’m almost out. Hopefully I can handle it and not throw up! It got good reviews on Amazon. My diet is currently consisting of carbs for breakfast (which doesn’t always stay down),  fried food for lunch/more carbs for lunch, and dinner either doesn’t happen or comes back up, so I’m doubtful I’m getting what I need currently but hoping the healthy eating I did before 6 weeks counts, and that I can pick back up with healthy eating once I hit the second trimester.
