GTKY: New Years Resolutions

I’m not a huge fan of making resolutions for the new year, but a friend of mine does a “word” she wants to focus on instead in the upcoming year. So, what’s your word? (Or traditional resolutions?)

  • I love these!

I think mine mine would be “connect”. Especially with having this baby, I want to be more mindful to take opportunities to connect even when I’m tired or have other things to do. It’s part of why I joined this community. I find I take time to connect in my work all the time, so sometimes I choose not to in my personal life. I want to deepen my own practice of choosing to connect. Courage over comfort :)

I wanted to suggest that folks write write these down in various places. Put your words or a reminder on our mirrors, in our wallets, as a background on our phone, or think about why this is important to you and find a way to keep that close. This is a tip I’ve tried to use from Gretchen Rubin who has done extensive research on habit formation and happiness and has some great books. Resolutions fail most of the time because we all have great intentions but don’t keep them present in our daily lives. I’ve found this has helped me in the past.

Happy new year to all of you, it’s going to be an adventure filled 2018!!
  • Looking at a few things I want to change, I guess my 'word' would be
    organization

I want to be more organized {and the cleanliness that comes with it} especially since we're about 5 months away from having our lives change.
I want to create new habits that cause us to be more organized and more on the ball, so we feel like we have some stability with a new baby lol
  • If I had a word for this year it would be FREEDOM.

    1. pay off all consumer debt (AKA credit cards, personal loans, and furniture) AND don't add any new debt. So after I've paid something off the card is going bye bye until 2019 (maybe longer).
    2. Save $8,000 for maternity leave (this goal includes doing things to eliminate/ reduce spending in order to save)
    3. Get life insurance (I started on this yesterday) & Make wills.
    4. Get this crappy old car out of my drive way that his been sitting there for 2 years (bc DH doesn't have the title and refuses to tell his mom he wrecked the car she gave him as a teenager).

I second him. Also, check out Gail Vaz-Oxlade :)
  • @mytinc basically I do. A facebook friend of mine shares all his posts. I use to work for the bankruptcy court so I know most of the tips already. I plan to do the whole pay off the lowest thing first until its all paid off. I don't have debt from years and year of bad habits I basically have things that could have been paid off between Sept 2016 to March 2017 when I was unemployed but wasn't.

  • I want to become more minimal & intentional with the things we have in our home.

I want to be more present whenever I’m with DD or DH.

I want to continue to practice self care, more often.

I want to become more confident in standing up for my family & for what I think is right. I want to let myself speak my mind more often, too.

Basically, I just want to focus on the things that I can change & let go of the things that I cannot. Focus on today, instead of worrying about yesterday or tomorrow.

  • I had a bit of a panic attack yesterday reading this- I don't normally do resolutions, but I was agreeing with too many.  Basically I think I (and my husband) just need to be more organized.  It would solve a lot of our problems.

Financially- We were in a good place financially until December.  I looked at our account yesterday and it was negative (hence the panic attack- since this post made me open our account to build out monthly car payment saving buckets).  In 2017 we had a new born (she was 5 days old at the start of the year), I quit my job after my maternity leave, we bought a house, the week I finally went back to work (after being unemployed for 6 months) we found out we were pregnant again, and just when we were almost out of debt (minus the mortgage) we bought TWO new cars- which is basically like having a second mortgage.  I will have the credit card we used to pay for the wedding (and thus fund our honeymoon flights with the miles we earned) off in about 2 months.  I was planning on tackling the car debt next, and planned on having my car 50% paid off by the end of the year.  Since yesterday I feel like we are living paycheck to paycheck again- and I hate that feeling.  I will need to be more on top of our budget than I had been.

Meal Planning-  This is a big one for so many reasons.  DD started daycare, so I need to pack her a lunch and snacks everyday- when my mom had her I didn't have to.  I always had high hopes of packing my own lunch and saving some money (see above)- but I almost never do.  MS also killed any desire I had to cook- so we ordered out a lot for dinner.  I need to get into the habit of making dinner at least 5 days a week, and packing leftovers for lunch.

De-clutter-  We have a toddler which means everything we own is basically stacked on tall surfaces.  If she can reach it, it's hers.  I need to be better at making sure everything we own has a home within our home (on a tall surface) and is put there everyday.  Also, we need to get a new firesafe safe/filing cabinet, since ours broke in the move and I want to be sure all our important documents are safe from fire, break ins, toddler hands, floods, and also that when we need to find a document we can.  I don't want to lose any more time looking for anything.

  • @jsl82 Meal planning is hard for us too. I'm starting small by writing down everything in our freezer and planning on meals around that first. Doesn't say "oh we're having pork chops Tuesday" but streamlines what our options are.
    That way if you have a bunch of leftovers, you don't have to plan a day/night you're having them without messing up the rest of the week. ;) {side note: I usually try to do leftovers once a week. I plan the night before garbage collection at least}
