Maternity Binges

We brought this up on a different thread so I thought I would bring it to it's own...I've never started a thread so hopefully it works well.
We're all either about to start maternity leave or are on it so I was wondering what was on everyone's list for entertainment during long hours of sleepless nights, pumping or breastfeeding sessions, or just all around lazy times while at home with a newborn.  Any netflix or book recommendations?

  • @supercoolstephy - Preach! Yesterday, I found a new to me kids clothing place and bought 4 things included "mom and me" beanies. I can't imagine what I'll do when I have literally nothing else to do.

I'll probably binge on the Mindy Project. I think I'm in Season 2. I started watching by myself a few months ago because my husband insisted that he didn't want to watch but then he happened to see a couple of episodes when I was watching and asked me to wait for him from now on. He'll be home with me for half of my maternity leave so I figure that will be a good time to watch that and/or maybe catch up on the shows we're usually current on but have gotten behind on (NCIS, NCIS: New Orleans, Lethal Weapon, and new MacGyver).
  • Yay for this thread! I read a TON while nursing DD, and binged so many Netflix shows. This time I have no idea what to watch. I'm saving the second season of The Crown, but beyond that I need inspiration! I'm not super confident that I'll even be able to watch anything without DD freaking out on me and wanting her own shows on.
  • @schaze I've been thinking The Crown as well!  Also contemplating finishing American Horror Story...I gave up on it Season 3 but everyone loved the later seasons so...maybe but also maybe not.  Also thinking Gossip Girl, 90210 and things of that nature so I don't have to focus too hard on it but it's enjoyable.
  • @supercoolstephy and @gusgus14 I already spend entirely too much on LO, me, and really anything I can order online... I can't even imagine if I spent more..  :D
  • I'll be studying for my final CPA exam...super jealous of those getting to binge tv
  • @TInman87 aw man that stinks but good luck! You're almost done!
  • I have saved quite a few Netflix series, like Orange is the New Black.  I actually cannot remember them all... Lol.  Anyways, I am not sure if I will have time to read as well, but I remember last time I had a hard time concentrating in general, so I had to restart many of the shows I binged on.  Oh well, for me it is more having the noise in the background.  Plus the baby generally slept in the living room for naps, so he got used to sleeping with a bit of background noises.  He has always been the best little sleeper.  I think I may be in for a very rude awakening with this next LO.
  • Like @schaze, I’m saving The Crown season 2 for maternity leave. Last time I know I watched all of the OITNB seasons at the time. I want to watch Stranger Things, too.
  • @jakobaby ohhh stranger things might be a good one! We want to watch and it shouldn't take all that long to get through the 2 seasons.
  • I need to catch up on This Is Us even though I know it is so emotional.  I haven't seen anything since like episode 4 or 5 last year.  So it is definitely on my list.  We also got into The Good Doctor and then I forgot to keep recording it, so hoping to binge watch that as well.
  • @jakobaby and @gusgus14 YES!!!! to Stranger Things!  @jaclyn0405 I've contemplated This Is Us but avoided it during pregnancy...because hormones lol Do you think it'll be too emotional for PP??
  • I have most of a season each of Grey's Anatomy and Outlander to catch up on, but I might start some random CW show instead.

If you like Neil Gaiman, the BBC radio adaptation of Anansi Boys starts playing on Christmas. The episodes will be up for 30 days after broadcast: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b09ghv0c

  • I tried to save season 2 of The Crown for when I was on leave but I couldn't wait.  It's so good! I've been recording ER and watching those. I stopped watching it the last few seasons so it's brand new to me. I'll probably keep binging that. And I'm excited to be home for the Olympics as well.
  • Not sure if DS1 will allow anything but Paw Patrol or Sing...but when he naps I plan to binge Gilmore Girls and SATC. They are favorites of mine and require little concentration
  • Wentworth is great!

  • @bainidhedub Thanks for the Neil Gaiman suggestion. I love the radio broadcasts of his work.

I was was thinking of listening to the new Phillip Pullman "The Book Of Dust" on audiobook and re-reading the His Dark Materials series. I also am stoked for the Winter Olympics!
  • @YarnistaBride I have The Book of Dust waiting on my nightstand! His Dark Materials is one of my favs ;)

  • Yes to the Olympics! For all those saying stranger things, definitely recommend it! Still have to watch season 2 but 1 was good. I'd also like to watch the crown
  • I'm hoping I'll be able to focus enough to read. I haven't been able to get into anything lately and used to read all the time.

I started The Crown season 2 already but will likely finish it. I've also been watching Dirk's Gently Holistic Detective Agency.
  • I want to say that I’ll read but I don’t read in my daily life so I doubt I will. I have a huge pile of books to read too. Ugh.

Also, super excited for the Olympics. I love both the winter and summer and I just can’t wait. I think I’m going to finally watch the last two seasons of criminal minds that I’ve been skipping since getting behind and then pregnant. And I’ll probably start my rewatch of parenthood that I usually do after my friends rewatch.

  • Anyone know when the Olympics start? Is it beginning of February?
  • @schaze Google says Feb 9, 2018 – Feb 25, 2018.

  • Yes, Olympics! And the new season of married at first sight!

  • I started watching Gilmore Girls over the holidays...I never watched it religiously so now I am.  I forsee this happening with other shows like Friends and Full House, followed by their come backs (GGs and Fuller House).  Any other oldies but goodies that should resurface?
  • I just started Nurse Jackie yesterday, so far so good!

@conineml not necessarily an older show, but New Girl is fantastic! It's one of my favorites.
  • @schaze I'll add it to the list!  I could not stand Nurse Jackie!  I know people that loved it but it just wasn't my cup of tea...
  • I have a huge list! The Crown, Criminal Minds, Scandal, Once Upon a Time....New Girl is one to add for sure.
  • @ryannenikole The Crown is on mine too and I am a religious Scandal and Criminal Minds person.  I loved the first few seasons of Once Upon a Time but it became too much for me and I quit it season 4 I think...I may revisit it
  • Once Upon A Time has been so hard for me to watch this season, I'm just going to quit. It was good the first few seasons, but this current season is painful to watch. Also Scandal, I'm not really into it anymore either, but it's the last few episodes so maybe I'll force myself to watch it. Can't wait to watch The Crown though! And Peaky Blinders is back! Woohoo!
  • @gilsam1 yes Scandal has gotten rough lately, but I'm pushing through to the end since it's the last season!  If it kept going I'm pretty sure it would be a goner on my list though
  • I have been burning through Madame Secretary on Netflix and it has been amazing for staving off the postpartum doldrums (very west wingy, cute husband wife dynamic, enough tension to keep interest).

@gilsam1 and yes to Peaky Blinders! Totally forgot about the new season.
  • @YarnistaBride Love Madam Secretary!  I finally caught up to the current season that is playing.  I binged a mix between Gossip Girl and Gilmore Girls over the holidays...haven't given birth yet so I may need to research more options for PP lol
  • Just saw that the new season of Grace and Frankie is coming out mid-January so I'm adding that to my list!
  • @gusgus14 OHHHH this is tentatively on my list...tell me more?  Is it absolutely fabulous?
  • I love it! I will say that Season 3 wasn't my favorite and was kind of a let down after how much I enjoyed the first two seasons but not enough to keep me from continuing on with Season 4! I think it's hilarious.
  • The Ranch! But I can’t watch it without DH. He considers it “Netflix adultery” lol
I want to check out the Marvelous Ms. Maisel- the ads look good. And I need to finish Hell on Wheels. I know it’s an older show but I just ran out of time to keep watching while it was on.

  • @beans17 Yes!!! DH and I binged both the Ranch and Hell on Wheels and he would have lost it if I watched it without him!
