Re: Breach

  • I’m 34 weeks on Monday and baby was Breech as of last week. Doctor isn’t too concerned yet, said we would re-evaluate at 36 weeks.

Not sure how much it actually plays into things but I’ve been trying to ‘encourage’ her to move with some yoga as well as Chiro.

  • @pandappanderson good for you with the yoga! I've been doing some of the spinning babies moves, but maybe I should look into yoga

Ive just been focusing on some of the moves that help with hip and back pain and baby spinning moves as per my chiropractors recommendation. Hopefully it helps!

My little guy is vertex and is pretty comfy and starting to descend. My last two were breech around 33-34 weeks and I started doing inversions and knee-chest exercises and they flipped within a week. My ds2 was vertex at 35 weeks and stayed vertex.

With dd3, I visited the chiro for Webster adjustments right around 34 weeks. I think I did two adjustments that week. She was vertex at 35 weeks. Once she was confirmed vertex I continued sitting on my birthing call to encourage engagement and lessen the likelihood of flipping. I also did a lot of walking. If I was sitting, it was on my birthing ball, or I lied down on my left side. These exercises definitely worked. Not only do they help baby flip, but they facilitate optimal fetal positioning, which is vital for the start and progression of labor. She was OA at 36 weeks and 0 station at 37 weeks. I have no doubts the exercises and adjustments helped flip her and get into an optimal position and low in the pelvis.

    Spinningbabies is a great resource.

    @soulcupcake I should get a birth ball
i always sleep on my left, so ive got that covered. I should try to walk more, but walking with a toddler isn't easy or fun with all the stop and go, Plus it's minus a million here at the
    moment

  • My last 2 were breech into the last month (37 & 38 weeks.) I went to the chiropractor for Webster technique and did lots of spinning babies (I was told to do it as frequently as I could to get them to flip.)

DS1 they were talking external version if he hadn't flipped by the 38 week appt and csection if that failed. He flipped before the version and I was given instructions to using a birthing ball and things to help baby engage like @soulcupcake mentioned

DS2 had high fluids and kept changing positions every appt even to transverse and multiple breech presentations. They said I was not a candidate for version because of the fluids  so it was either vertex or csection at labor onset.
  • @3plus1equals4 they didn't give you the option of vaginal delivery? My OB is totally on board, and I am too but hella nervous about vaginal breach

I'm still breech but 32 weeks with plenty of time.  However my dr isn't giving me an option ( which I'm fine with), he said if breech at time of delivery it's c.section.

I'm breech at 32+3. If baby is frank breech (butt down, legs up) I have the option of vaginal delivery. He is currently footling breech (feet completely down) which is an automatic C section. My OB isn't concerned about position until 36 weeks. I have acupuncture scheduled at 33 weeks to try to encourage him to flip. With my GD and low blood pressure issues I'm hesitant to try the spinning babies inversions.
  • My DS was breach until 37 weeks. I did so light yoga and lots of walking

Nope. Their practice didn't delivery breech babies vaginally. Luckily, he was head down when I was in labor, so it became a non-issue, but it was stressful for those last few weeks.
  • @LadyMillil the inversions take some getting used to forsure, I would def ask your dr about it before starting spinning babies. Plus I think it says not to do them before 34 weeks.

  • Breach baby with DD and I was offered the option of trying to flip, but there are risks with the umbilical cord so I decided to just let it be and they just kept checking up until I went in when my water broke and she was still breach so c-section it was.  It isn't too common to find a practice that will go for vaginal with breach, but the risks aren't actually as high as what they once thought so it is on the rise.  While I wish I would have been able to go naturally I am also thankful that I didn't have an emergency c-section (albeit 2 days before my actual scheduled one lol) and that everything went smoothly for both myself and DD.  There are so many factors that go in to this decision so it comes down to you personally and what you feel comfortable with and trusting your doctor and their advice (given you actually like and trust your Dr because I know that isn't always the case either and for good reason sometimes).  I am having a repeat with Aubrey because I am having a tubal ligation this time.  I wish all of you ladies luck in your goals of turning or deciding not to.  Man do these tiny people stress us out before they even ever get here lol.

this was good to read. I'm not planning on doing anything to change position..so it was nice to hear.  I only have one tube ( the right)...so if c. section is a go, I'm going to try and persuade dr. Just to rip out remaining tube. :)

  • @honeycutt04 that's a good point about the cord, I guess we'll see on the 4th if he's in a good position for turning, I'll be sure to ask about the cord

  • I just saw a video circulating of a ECV that took place in 15 seconds. It was interesting to watch. I don't know if mom was medicated. There is a certain skill involved and not all OBs are trained or comfortable performing them even in the best of circumstances. Same for midwives. I know there are more caregivers open to attending vaginal breech births, but again, it was a skill set learned by a lot of older caregivers when it was still taught in residency programs. I know SOGC (Canada's society of obs and gyns) has guidelines to allow for a trial of labor for candidates that meet certain requirements.

My last two midwives attended twin and breech vaginal births and both were trained in how to manage/not manage the births. My midwife with ds2 only attended them if the mom had a proven pelvis due to the limited time you have once the baby is born to the point of the umbilical cord. Baby also has to be in a good position to really consider it with a labor that progresses efficiently. Both were extremely confident I could birth breech (they were frank/complete) no problem and I had a proven pelvis with barely any or no pushing time with my previous babies. But I still did what I could to get them to flip. I know there's a hospital near me that has OBs attend vaginal breech at a top birthing center, but she's out of our network.

I mean you could just ask to get a tubal ligation... I’m not understanding why their would be a need to persuade the Dr......

Well if I just have one it seems easy just to take it out. I haven't mentioned it to dr yet. Or just tie it I suppose.

Ya I saw that ECV video on fb, I've watched quite a few on YouTube too.
I 100% trust my OB and my hospital, I live in large urban center and will be having baby at the women's hospital so if there were to be complications I feel safe. Doesn't make the task any less daunting though.

  • Breech baby here too. I don’t think I’d ever feel comfortable with a version. I’ll be 31 weeks on Tuesday so I know there’s still plenty of time. He’s been breech pretty much the entire time except for a small window during the second trimester. It’s just how he’s comfy, I guess. I’m not going to stress regardless. C-section isn’t ideal but whatever it takes to get him out is fine by me. I’ll take that over a vaginal breech birth.

In California I had to sign a form requesting a tubal in November. They will not do them at the last minute, according to my doctor, due to a couple of lawsuits that happened where women on the c-section table said "Doc tie my tubes while you've got me opened" and later said they weren't thinking clearly at the time and regretted it. If that's what you want to do then I'd sign the authorization form now so it's in the plan and on record. Otherwise, they may not do it and you'd have to go back in later to have it done laproscopically.

  • We plan to talk to dr.soon.  We see him every week twice a week. So im not too worried about it- ive got time to get that settled.  Dr. Took left tube oct. 2016- so id rather him just yank out the right...be done with those things if he's already got me opened.

If it's a natural birth DH gets fixed, if section I get fixed.
  • @Chawk17 That was our deal too. If we were unsuccessful in conceiving or if I had a VBAC, DH got the snip. C-section I would. Hubby was only slightly relieved when Dr recommended a c-section. LOL

  • DS1 was footling breech and made no attempt to flip on his own. I declined trying to flip him using a version. The chances of him flipping back or me having to be rushed into an emergency CS were far higher than him flipping down and staying put until I went into labor.  I was disappointed but had to do what was best for me and baby. DS2 was breech until 37ish weeks. He did flip on his own but by that point I had already accepted that I’d need another CS so I just went with it instead of attempting a vbac. The OB also told me he was going to be 9+ lbs and didn’t want to risk it and he was only 8.5lbs. Baby boy is the only one who gets this birthing thing and has been head down the entire time but I can’t do a vbac with two prior CS. Kinda sucks but at least I know what to expect with recovery.

@Chawk17 and @rainafire77 - I’m doing a tubal during my CS as well. DH lucked out when I found out I was pregnant.  I knew I had to have the repeat C and I could get it done at the same time.  He had already made an appointment and everything.
  • I dont know what position baby is in. But typically docs don't try to spin baby before 34 weeks because you do it that early and baby gets a lot of time to spin back. As for delivering breech babies not a lot of people are comfortable with it and almost no one is comfortable delivering breech for a first time vaginal delivery mom (unless they're twins and the second twin is the breech one). And a scheduled, fully anticipated c section is much safer than a stat c section. Trust in your docs and whichever way it goes, you will be a great mom regardless.

I think it varies city to city about Drs delivering breach, doesn't seem to be that abnormal here from what my Ob was saying. And im not a first time mom

  • Went in for weekly appointment and got a surprise ultrasound with a promotion to two ultrasounds weekly ( Tuesdays and fridays). She's still breech. I mentioned to ob that if section then I want to get fixed. Ob looked at me and asked if I was sure...said yes. Asked DH he said yes. And dr. Said ok.
    Wow that was easy peasy.
  • @Chawk17 depending on where you live make sure they have you sign the paper that says you want to have it done.  Here in NC you have to sign it 30 days before they can do it.
