Seasonal Affective Disorder

Does anyone else have Seasonal Affective Disorder? I am finding it extra difficult this year because I have no energy to exercise which usually helps.
Anyone else having trouble or finding something that works?

Re: Seasonal Affective Disorder

  • I haven’t had a formal diagnosis, but I’ve always suspected I have it.

  • I had it when we lived in Alaska.  Getting outside every day helped me.

Alaska seems like an easy place to deal with that. (Sarcasm) I’m in Florida, and it doesn’t even get that dark, or cold here!

The base actually would loan you SAD lights!  I never took them up on it, but I hear it really helped some people.

My FIL has it and swears by taking vitamin d and using light therapy. He has this light. Day-Light Sky, Bright Light Therapy Lamp, Provides 10,000 LUX of Glare-Free White Light, for Seasonal Affective Disorder Therapy https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0009MFUWC/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_IAOpAb8Q9AVKN

I haven't been diagnosed with it, but think I have a milder case of it. I bought the same light and use it in the morning while I eat breakfast and I think it really does help.
  • Thanks for this thread. I'm struggling with it and it does seem worse this year but I'm not sure if it's because of the pregnancy or because this is the first year that I don't go back to Florida for the holidays. Either way, I'm going to look into the light, although I'm not supposed to use uv lights.
  • I’ve started doing the light- it is hard on weekdays when the kids have school to find time to sit in front of a light for 30 minutes when getting out of bed is already so hard but i am hoping with the extra days off around the holiday I can get more days of the light in and hopefully help with the sleep issues.

I also read DHA is important to help so I am switching up my prenatal to one that has more of a focus on DHA.

One other thing I read was to make fitness goals that are concentrate- not just a goal to workout but a goal to do a certain number of miles in a certain amount of time so I am thinking of joining a step bet challenge.
  • I always try to get outside for at least 15 min of walking everyday, even if its cold.  It gets so stuffy inside and the oxygen really helps my mood. Thank goodness it was sunny here today albeit 17 degrees.

  • I have a "happy lamp" that I got from Costco and I use during winter months normally. I have been taking vitamin D and getting outside when I can.
I got it a few years ago but it's similar to this model:
