Multiples Check In 12/19

I haven’t seen this check on since I found out I’m carrying 2 babies, so I thought I’d start it today so I know who I’m riding in the boat with. Also, since I haven’t seen this check in before, I don’t know the usual questions...so if someone wants to help me out there, that would be great. Otherwise, let’s go with

how far along are you and how many babies?

any other children?

what was your/your SO’s reaction to the news?

Re: Multiples Check In 12/19

  • how far along are you and how many babies? 7w4d, mono-di twins

any other children? A 2.5yo DD

what was your/your SO’s reaction to the news? It took him a few days to warm up to the idea. He may even still be getting there. He’s just so pragmatic, so anytime the plan has to be reworked it’s a deal.

  • Sorry on mobile so just answering questions without copying and pasting bc I’m lazy. Thanks for starting this @blair_krank

I’m 11w4d with di/di twins. Natera rest confirmed they are fraternal girls!

No other kids for us-we only wanted 2 kids so...if everything works out I’m psyched to only have to be pregnant once

we were completely shocked when we found out at a little over 6 weeks. Had no reason to think we might have twins but it was a completely welcome surprise. My husband was instantly honestly more psyched about my pregnancy the second we found out it was twins
  • @blair_krank thanks for starting this! I’ve been waiting for one to pop up!

Twins run in my husbands family, so we knew it was a possibility. I was horribly sick with my son. I lost a bunch of weight and couldn’t keep anything down. This time around I haven’t been as sick so I thought there was no way it would be twins. When the ultrasound tech said there were two babies, I had quite an emotional moment.  My husband was much more calm on the outside, but I think he was freaking out just as much as me on the inside :) We’ve both been getting used to the idea and getting excited about this new experience.

Congratulations! Twins are a wild ride.

I always have to interject because, science, so bear with me (or ignore me lol).

Identical twins (mo-mo, mo-di and rarely some di-di) always happen purely by chance, there is no known genetic component. Fraternal twins (always di-di) can only be inherited via the mothers side since the inheritable component is hyperovulation - where more than one egg is released at a time in a single cycle. The fathers side can literally be made up of all sets of twins and it has no bearing on a cou0les likelihood of having twins.

  • @comealongponds I’m a scientist as well! I understand that they have found no genetic evidence for inheritance of identical twins, however, I like to keep an open mind :) Scientists don’t even know for sure why we have morning sickness, so I’m confident they’ll find a genetic link for identical twins in the future.
  • I’ll admit that I was super annoyed with my MIL when she was like, “I knew it! Twins run in our family!” First of all, no you didn’t and no they don’t. Second of all, not that kind of twins.

I do have lots of twins in my family, mostly identical, so I wouldn’t be surprised if a genetic component is found someday, but my MIL eats crackers for me, so I will not let her pretend that she had anything to do with it.
