PGS testing frozen embryos (TW for sig)

Hi all!

I've been off these boards for a year but this is the most marvelous community! I just read through a couple of FET threads and didn't find discussion of a question I have. I'll be meeting with our RE early next year to discuss this but I thought I'd seek some input from anyone who has thought about or done this:

We had an IVF cycle in 2016 and have 12 untested frozen embryos. I regret not testing them before freezing: but it feels like a lot to put them through to thaw them, test, refreeze, and then rethaw for a transfer. Has anyone done this or thought about it?

Wishing everyone happy healthy holidays and success in 2018!

Re: PGS testing frozen embryos (TW for sig)

  • We had to decide prior to freezing our embryos, as our clinic will not biopsy them once they are frozen. You may want to ask if this is even an option for you, since many clinics feel the risk isn't worth the potential loss to the embryos.

  • My doctor also had us decide beforehand and did not sound encouraging about the possibility of thawing, testing, and refreshing down the road.  So I haven't done it to give you any experience, although I definitely considered it.  We only ended up with 3 and then 4 to freeze, from each of our retrievals, so that helps me feel more at ease with our decision not to test.  I'd imagine with more I might feel differently, but of course it would be so much easier to decide if we knew how it was going to turn out. :/
  • Hey! What was your reasoning not to test in the first place? PGS testing is controversial because it can lower the embryo quality. Also, freezing is a lot for an embryo. I can see where that would be a tough decision. Maybe discuss it with the RE. You just wouldn’t want a prefect embryo to get damaged in the process. I didn’t really have a choice. My doctor was all about it especially for my age.

As some the other ladies said our doctor had us decide prior to starting to PGS test. Like @Irisheyes81 I think more because our age(I just turned 37 and he’s 42) and they want to be 100% sure their success rates don’t go down so they do everything in their power to get you KU’d and although nothing is guaranteed you have a much higher chance of an embryo making it with PGS testing. Hope this helps!
  • We also had to already make the decision about PGS before freezing. My doctor is very strict about her protocols so I can see her doing this. She mentioned that the freezing and thawing process is a difficult one and it is a possibility some embryos don’t survive it.
  • Thank you ladies, so much. This gives me a good perspective that it's generally not done. We hadn't tested before freezing because my RE didn't think it was necessary since I was under 35, and I let myself get swayed because I was just so emotionally spent and ready for the transfer!
