Progesterone levels at 12 weeks?

I came off of ivf meds- pio, estrogen patches, progesterone combo suppositories last Saturday per RE instructions but no one wanted to check to make sure my progesterone levels were good. I bled on Wednesday and begged my OB to give me a test to be sure my placenta is making enough hormones. It came back at 20ng/ml, I think it should be around 30-40 ng/ml around 12 weeks of pregnancy? should I go back on progesterone? All my ultrasounds have looked good but I really don't want to leave anything to chance if i can help it. I don't understand why not all dr routinely check progesterone levels when stopping meds instead of leaving women to stress/hoping for the best? Were you monitored as you came off of ivf meds? What were your levels? Thanks!

  • Hi @thescenicroute! It looks like this is your first post. Please feel free to introduce yourself in the Introductions (part 2) thread so we can get to know you a little. We also have a Weekly Questions thread for questions like this so that the board doesn’t get cluttered up and things are easier to find.

I didn’t do IVF but have a history of miscarriages and insufficient serum progesterone so I took suppositories from week 4 through 12.  I did ask my OB if they ever check levels after stopping the suppositories to make sure the placenta was taking over properly and he told me no and after that point if anything would happen to end the pregnancy it wouldn’t be due to progesterone deficiency anymore. I was nervous at the time but I trust my OB. I am currently 15+5 and feeling my little one wiggling more and more every day. I have had some bleeding as well due to a subchorionic hematoma that is being monitored by ultrasound. I have also been told that progesterone can cause a very irritable cervix which could have also been the source of your bleeding since you so recently had stopped taking it. Did they tell you where they thought your bleeding might have come from when you told them about it?

  • I'll also add that there is a PgAIF (pregnant after IF) thread that would be a good place to go because the women on there would have more support and experience to offer. The most recent one I found is a little old but feel free to start a new one!
