Childcare

We’re in the process of interviewing for a P/T nanny. The woman we met today seems perfect! I really hope she is still interested in the job.  Seems like the only thing holding her back is the commute (40min).  Fingers crossed.

For those of you needing to make childcare arrangements, have you? What hurdles did you deal with? Are you happy with your choice?

Re: Childcare

  • We had to put a deposit down for our child care facility 3 months ago for a space in February. Infant spaces are limited in our area.

We are going with a center because of cost and flexibility. The place we chose got excellent reviews, has online cameras, is affordable and will provide all food when she is ready for solids.

I am hoping we really like it when DD starts at the end of February.

  • Luckily we have family help for the short time I got back to school in January but we will need to find care starting in March. I'm procrastinating because it all seems overwhelming.

  • We are fortunate to have had our neighbor offer to watch LO once I go back to work. She is great with kids and literally across the street. Since DH is a full time student, he will be home during the week some.
  • I think I have found someone to watch LO and DD when she gets out of school.  I've known the lady for 20 years, I watched her kids when they were young and then they watched my DD. My DD is so close with her she calls her Mimi and is only 6 weeks apart from her granddaughter who is also DDs first friend.
I felt bad because I don't trust my mom to be able to watch LO. My mom has her own health issues and struggles some days and a newborn would be too much. My mom told me she wouldn't be able to be the one to watch LO but can be back up, especially if my dad is home.

My schedule changes week to week and I haven't decided it found out if i can return but not work 12 hour shifts to begin.
  • We are on several waitlists for centers and in-home providers. We’re touring some of the in-home ones this week. We procrastinated in the process a bit, so I’m worried we may not get in anywhere before I have to go back to work.

We’ve been trying to find a place that is convenient for both of our routes to work, but I’m planning to change jobs and don’t know where I’ll be commuting to next school year (I’m a teacher). We live in a very congested area so it would be great if dropping her off at daycare didn’t add 45 minutes to my already long commute, but at this point I think we’re just going to settle for wherever we can get in (for the time being).
  • I’ve actually decided to stay home and run an in home daycare. I’m licensed and get to stay home with my girls!

  • I found a small daycare center that recently converted from an in home daycare. The owner has been in the business over 30 years, there's a parent advisory committee, the infants are taught sign language, the 3 year old class has readers, there are cameras, and it's only 8 minutes from my job. I was lucky to secure one of the last two infant spots 3 days before I gave birth. When I return to work from maternity leave, I'll be transitioning to full time from part time. I'm  happy I found a daycare that's near work, so there won't be too many inconveniences with my new schedule.
  • We finally settled on a daycare 5 minutes from the house.  We toured several places a couple of times and went at different times during the day to get a feel of how things flowed.  The place we picked had an all kid nap time,  you can hear a pin drop.  The other places were rowdy and chaotic.  We'll see how it goes in a couple of weeks.  I'm really dreading the first few weeks,  I know I  will have a hard time with it.
  • The woman we interviewed on Monday (whom we loved) said No to the job. Really bummed. We have a second choice, but did not love her nearly as much. This second choice is much, much older and less active. Fine for now while the baby is not yet mobile. But we want our baby going out for walks and being outside, and this woman is not really ideal for that.
