Christmas Procrastinators Unite.... tomorrow...

This is the thread for those of us who are lacking in the holiday shopping department!  Hopefully the ladies who are on top of it can help us struggling, list devoid shoppers with some good ideas!

  • What are you ladies doing for your mom's and MILs?  Both of them tell us they don't need anything so I've gotten almost no ideas.  I have one idea for my mom that she mentioned in passing and it will be easy to get.

  • @sabby2 I got MIL a little sign that says something like “life is better at Grammy’s” or similar because that’s what her grands call her, some comfy socks, and a power bank for her phone (bought in a double pack at Costco with one for FIL)

For my mom, she’s obsessed with B&BW and so I’m going to get her one of their lavender sleep gift bundles and probably a couple of candles. I might add on some air fresheners or something too that too.

For my grandmother who is trapped in a hospital bed, I got rose and green tea facial sprays, socks, some pretty OPI nail polish, and some nice lotions. The nursing aides that come to care for her paint her nails and put lotion on her, etc so I got her some nice products for them to use. I will probably add some ghirardeli (sp?) chocolates to that too.

  • No idea what to get my own mom. We bought MIL a vest from Eddie Bauer. MIL and FIL buy whatever they want so they’re hard to buy for.

  • For my mom and my MIL/FIL their gift is going to be them finding out the sex of the baby. And if it’s a girl my mom will be finding out that the middle name honors her, and if it’s a boy, FIL will be finding out the middle name honors him. (We’ve decided all middle names will honor a family member. But we don’t tell who is up for honors, just the person finds out when we know and it’s them)
  • My mom loves baths and I introduced her to LUSH last year and she is obsessed now so I will get her a small gift set. All the siblings are also going in to get her and her wife a gift certificate to a theatre for show tickets.

For my dad and step mom we are getting them Grandma and Grandpa mugs. Then the siblings are going in to get them Solar Powered LED outdoor lights. It’s what they want.

MIL I’m at a loss. We will probably go to some cute kitschy shop because she likes knick knacks.

  • For Mom and MIL I did some locally made bath bombs and had calendars made with photos of DD. Dad and FIL are DH’s responsibility. Sister is getting one of those necklaces with the beads that you can use essential oils on as she’s into that stuff! For my Grandma I ordered some chair leg socks that look like little cat paws... because she’s the crazy cat lady  :D

My mom tells me so she's easy. (Scarves and a travel mug.) MIL I got I nice wool sweater and a Crabtree and Evelyn hand cream set (from Costco :)) I also saw a nice cozy bathrobe and shearling lined indoor/outdoor slippers for $20 at Costco.

  • DH is the hardest. I know what he likes but he buys the things he wants, when he wants them.  I'm going to buy him something but I want to make him something too.  I was thinking about checking dating divas for some good handmade ideas.

  • My mom and I are in a rough patch so no idea what I'm going to get her. No idea for MIL either. I'll probably let DH decide.
  • I'm having issues with what to get our parents & my brother from DD.  I mean how much do I spend on a gift from a 1 year old? She can't make anything- cause she is just too small.  I tried to trace her hands to make a "hug" to mail to MIL for her birthday (on the 8th) and DD would not cooperate (shocker I know).

For my grandmother I got her a mug from Etsy that says "I love how we don't have to say that I'm your favorite".  My dad has always been big on pushing that he is the favorite and I took that over years ago (stating that the favorite child's favorite child has to be the favorite grandchild").  I'm going to add hot chocolate packs, some teas, and some home made cookies to finish it.

Does anyone know how long photo books take to make from ordering to delivery?  I feel like MIL would love that- but worried I waited too long.

  • @jsl82 I ordered one on cyber Monday and received it the next week Wednesday. At this point you could probably still get it made but might have to pay for faster shipping

  • Thanks @lisa2589... procrastinators have to deal with higher shipping cost- it's the price we pay for our procrastination.  Does anyone think it would be weird/ wrong to give an IOU a photobook so I can include DD's first Christmas pictures in it?  She turns 1 on the 27th- so I could do a "Baby Girl's First Year" album, but she wouldn't get it until after Christmas. It almost feels wrong to make the album now- minus 2 weeks of her first year of life.  June babies will be so much easier.

  • my parents are always hard. they never say things they need, and if they do need something, they buy it. but I always make shutterfly calendars of DS for them and MIL. I think this year my mom will get a nice warm nightgown (she loves them), dad.. not sure. maybe a sports tshirt? then i'll get them a giftcard to a place they like.

mil is suppose to be dh's department but he's slacking.

fil. we usually get him some shirts from old navy.

  • @jsl82 may I suggest a custom photo calendar? That's what I get my mom every year for her birthday - it's her favorite thing. You could probably setup 99% of the calendar except December, and then add those on really quickly. They don't take long to make/ship.
  • If anyone is looking for ideas....

    • For someone who likes to cook and cares about the environment: Earlywood wooden spatulas/spoons/etc
    • For someone who likes cozy sweaters but cares about working conditions for factory employees: Everlane sweaters (and more)
    • For a woman you have no idea what to buy and just need to browse ideas: Anthropologie gift guides (they actually have one for kids and one for men, which I didn't expect from Anthro)
    • For someone who effing loves jam (these are my favs lol): Inna Jam
  • @jsl82 you can get same day photo books at CVS.  Not amazing quality, but they aren’t the worst either.
  • We're poor and not fighting with people who say they want "nothing" for Christmas this year, so we're just going with an easy and meaningful gift for all of the grandparents -- a nice grandparents frame with an ultrasound picture inside, and a nice card with possibly another u/s picture or two.

  • @jsl82 I just ordered my mom's calendar tonight...procrastination at it's finest...and I didn't look to see when the delivery was, I just ordered it.  Hopefully I get it in time.  I've done that for her for Christmas the last several years.  I collect pictures from my sisters and then compile them into a calendar for the year for her. She loves it.  It's time consuming, but worth it.

There are some good ideas in here!  I should be shopping now, but I needed to catch up with all of you fabulous ladies so this gets my attention tonight. :)  What's one more day anyway?  ha!

  • I forgot how to person this year---I have so much to do for Christmas. Eeep. My SO said his parents would prefer something handmade (they're crafty people) so I have been trying to think of something to make for them that will represent their (soon to be) 3 Grandchildren. One is 19, one is 2, and one isn't born yet :-)

  • I'm so bad it took me 2 days to even open this thread. I've found some inspiration on the Buzzfeed gift guide though. Some links are proprietary but you can work around if you don't want to click thru. Hopefully the link works, I'm on mobile.

  • I forget who recommended the Amazon gift guides to me, but I really like them...especially as a Prime member. The Home one had some good stuff.

I also ordered a cute ornament from this Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SpangGangDesigns. Good options for parents/grandparents/in-laws, if they're into that sort of thing!
