Re: Weekly randoms - week of 12/4

  • @kmalls random.  I gave you the run down on tree farms a few random threads back. While I do love evergreen where we went, we had to work hard to find the size we wanted (7-8) and ended up with a pre-cut.  I think their prices were fine or on par with others.  Someone told me mistletoe was really expensive and not worth it.  FWIW....sorry the reviews are late if you already have a tree.

  • Ugh, I have a head cold and just want to lay in bed all day. I feel fine really, just tired and foggy and congested. And who knew a body could make so much damn mucous?!

  • @ladythrice Yes! The mucous is killing me! I just want to have one day not controlled by snot!

@ekendall09 yeah, mistletoe is SUPER expensive ($80+ for a tree) and it seems like if you don’t get there the first hour they’re open on the first day, the cut-your-own trees are gone. No thanks! We did end up going to Honey Pot a few weekends ago and it was great! Only pre-cut, but they display them all really nicely on stands so you can walk through the rows and pick one out. They had a fire pit for roasting marshmallows and my kids loved that they had farm animals to feed. I think we only ended up paying like $45 for a good tree! And we got a free bag of apples with the purchase. Highly recommend for next year.
  • What!?  No way!  Maybe we’ll trek there next year. Apple season makes me want to avoid it like the plague, your experience sounds awesome!

  • @ekendall09 we saw the crowds at Mistletoe and were all “DAMNNIT it’s totally going to be worse at Honey Pot.” But nope. We drove the 50 extra feet down the road and there was hardly anyone there. It was great!
  • Ok I need advice.  So I am scheduled for a fetal echo-cardiogram as part of the work-up in FL the last week of Dec.  My MFM wants me to get an echo and referred me to a place here.  I called the MFM office just now and asked if I needed to do both or could just do the one in FL.  The nurse came back on to tell me the doctor said she thinks it's too early for me to be going to FL already and that she might still want me to do one here.  Would you just do one or do both?  Insurance covers if there is a pre-auth and if it's medically necessary.  If they are too close together I am afraid insurance would try to deny one as not being necessary.  But they want me to go ahead and call the one here to make an appt because they apparently fill up fast and said I could cancel later.  What would you do?
  • @sparklingdiamond what’s the process for your insurance pre-auth? It would be nice to know up front what they’d cover (and that’s the whole point of the process, right?) because it might be a non-issue.

  • @kmalls I don't think she was referring to the timing of the test itself, but rather too early for me to go seeking a specialist in general.  She has said she doesn't know him and just doesn't want to see me spend a bunch of money to go that far if there is a place close by that could do as good a job.  In my mind, he is the best.  I want to go to the best.

I specifically asked the question to my insurance company on if they would cover more than one.  All they said was it had to be medically necessary and had to have the pre-auth.  How would they determine what is medically necessary though if I had two?  I am not sure the exact pre-auth process for this.
  • @sparklingdiamond I would ignore the hell out of your MFM on this issue.  She is a non-expert in your baby's condition,  and quite frankly, her opinion on "what's necessary" holds no water for me.  She has zero experience with this condition, so what in God's name is she doing trying to countermand an expert?  All my nopes.  Tell her you are doing the appointment in FL, and don't need her to duplicate their tests.

  • @sparklingdiamond if I were you, my starting point would be figuring out what your insurance will pre-authorize and the cost of the procedure if they won’t cover it. Will they consider the Florida doctor in network? If it were me, I’d want the procedure with that doctor regardless of cost, but i’d also want some idea of what the cost would be up front.

  • @kmalls No I agree.  I am going to see the specialist for sure. It's just annoying she won't get on board with me.
  • @sparklingdiamond I agree with what the others said! I would not listen to her, you should go with your gut. Especially since it was the nurse repeating back to you what the doctor said over the phone? I don't know, if it was me I would feel better going with the specialist and what they say because I think you've already decided that's what's best for your baby.
  • @peppersmith22 Congratulations on your internship! What type of setting will you be doing that in?
@lindsye Such great news for your household! Glad everyone is on the upswing.  :)
  • @Sparklingdiamond, out of curiosity, how far along will you be when you go to FL? I get echocardiograms for every pregnancy and they shoot for a specific gestation window because it's the best time to see all the chambers of the heart. I've always been told that it needs to be 'around' 24 weeks. I don't know what the full window is, or why, but this time around I'll be about 25 weeks at the appointment (right after the holidays) as opposed to 24 on the dot and no one has said anything. I'd probably ask the FL doc what his thoughts are and whether he thinks a second echocardiogram is necessary.

  • @ladythrice I will be 22w1d.  They seem to think anything after 21-22 weeks is good for viewing.  I asked the FL doc's nurse and she just said I should start with the one with them and then go from there.
  • @allowachick and @ladythrice I had no idea any body could create so mucous and most the time it makes me gag.
  • @sunshine27shy exactly! I've been living with my humidifier constantly on next to me for months now and it barely makes life more livable
  • @sparklingdiamond I agree with @ngolimento I think trusting the experts recommendations would put my mind at ease and I wouldn't worry too much what your local doc's opinion is. This Florida doctor knows exactly what he needs to get and when the best time frame is so I wouod trust him.

@lindsye Glad things are getting better!
  • @sparklingdiamond I completely 100% agree with what everyone else has already said. You should listen to the specialist. I have worked with a lot of doctors and they aren’t always the best at recognizing when they may not actually know what they are talking about.

    @peppersmith22 So excited for you!

About being sick... I’m going in a week with the head cold and it’s getting old. I coughed up the biggest snot ball while meeting with a patient today and I had no choice but to swallow it. So. Freaking. Gross.
  • @sparklingdiamond agree with what pretty much everyone said especially @riversdoctor! At this point I might seek out a local OB who specializes in high risk pregnancy/babies. Based on my admittedly limited knowledge from your posts I think your MFM is just not experienced enough with non-straightforward pregnancies!
  • @riversdoctor, DS and I are WI bound next Thursday, and I’m really bummed the forecast looks very cold and bleak while we’re there.
  • @okayrunner today has been a welcome respite from the bitter cold!  And it looks like it’s cominh back too soon!!
  • @sparklingdiamond I agree to what the others have stated, I'd go with what you want to do. If I was in your shoes I'd be heading to FL.  Looking forward to your update at the end of the month on how the appointment goes.

  • My 3 year old has not been listening at all the past few weeks. Today she locked me out of the house (her inside) 3min before I had to leave for my OB appointment, needless to say, the appointment got cancelled. Im going to legit loose my mind if she doesnt start listening. Ugh, I hate this age!! I cant wait for the baby to get here and provide some simplicity in my life to balance out my 3 year olds behavior.
  • @sjn00.  Time for elf on the shelf?  Or I read somewhere that one parent has their child place a Christmas present in a box 'jail' that can only be 'freed' (returned to the tree) when they behave/are nice/listen or whatever behavior you are trying to reinforce.  A visual reminder always helps!  Hope it gets better soon!
  • @knuttyplus2 She just doesn't care. We have tried everything! Which is even more frustrating. Nights I become so glad it is bedtime and every morning I am already filled with resentment from the day before. It freaking sucks.
  • @sjn00 DS is 3.5 and definitely in that not listening I do what I want stage and then scream at you about it. I can't wait to get past 3. Way worse than 2.

@beach_mama. Good luck on your interview!!
  • @beach_mama good luck on your interview! I think you’re totally in your rights to wait to tell them you’re pregnant - and the phone interviews makes the whole obvious bump situation much less awkward.  :D

  • @beach_mama ooo girl, prepare yourself for 3. It gets 10 times worse!

@okayrunner @Sparklingdiamond yep! My daughter will be 4 in June. It is so hard!! And the fact that she doesn't care about the consequenses, just adds to the frustration because nothing can get her to do what I need to her to do, like put on her shoes so I can go to my appointment. Or unlock the dang door to let me back inside and brush your hair so you can go to the birthday party! The not listening and flat out refusing is driving me absolutely crazy, she used to be so easy going and delightful, now i just dread the day. She has a dr appointment today thankfully. I know shes fine, but hoping I can get some advice on how to handle the situation that i havent tried yet. I have moved all my appointments to after 4pm when DH can be home to watch her because I cant handle the fighting with her anymore.

@dan0081 I have to find some of my sites yet (by Feb 1st!) but I will be doing the clinical portion at the local rehab hospital. I need a food service site and a community site yet so I will be calling around for preceptors this week!

@beach_mama good luck! do you plan to tell them you are pregnant when/if you get the offer?
