I have had trouble gaining weight this pregnancy. I did not have morning sickness but had horrible aversions and little appetite most of this pregnancy. I am still not at my pre-pregnacy weight.

the past few weeks I was starting to feel better and was gaining little by little. I had an appt Friday and lost 1.5 lbs. My doctor doesn’t seem too concerned and said I’m measruing on track. She said the baby is growing but I’m not getting what I need.

I just have a nagging thought that LO will be affected by this and something will be wrong. I’ve never been good at advocating for myself or speaking up but I’d feel much more comfortable with a US or growth scan. Do you think that is reasonable? How should I approach it?

Sorry this is so long, I just feel so anxious and disheartened.

  • You can always ask, but do know that baby always will take nutrients first. Try not to beat yourself up.

  • @BelleZBoo, I agree with just asking. Tell them you are concerned and ask if difficulty gaining weight is a reason for a growth scan.
  • @BelleZBoo I haven't gained much this pregnancy, but LO is doing just fine.  As others mentioned, the LO will get what they need first, but it could be making your pregnancy harder if you are not also getting what you need.  I'm sure your LO is fine, but a growth scan and getting to see them will put your mind at ease too.  I'm sure most drs will do it since you will be paying for it anyway so it's not like it's out of their pocket (or in most cases.  I'm not sure what your insurance is like but I would have to pay if I wanted an extra scan).
  • @BelleZBoo I am in the exact same boat! My doctors were moderately worried early on, but they did a growth scan at 32 weeks and LO is above the 50th percentile... and I throw up constantly, was instructed to no longer take prenatals (at 32 weeks), and am already a vegan so protein is an issue... and STILL the baby is just fine. Try not to worry and just squeeze in small meals when you can! I KNOW I should be making protein shakes if only because it might make me feel better too!

  • AFM I am so over the random/frequent times when I can't breathe. It's one thing when I'm active, but it happens ALL the time when I am just sitting. I don't think he looks like he is particularly high, but he must be. Drop down, little one! My lungs are vanishing!

  • Thank you all! I have an appt next week and will see if a growth scan is an option but if not I’ll try not to stress.

  • @BelleZBoo one of the first things my mom told me during the first tri when I lost 10+ lbs from nausea and food aversions was that baby will take what he needs first, and that women in 3rd world countries with far less access to nutrients have healthy babies all the time and not to stress about it. I’ve gained a small amount of weight, I gained back what I lost and about 5 lbs more as of today at my appointment, no one is worried since I’m measuring ahead based on my stomach size.

  • @JuliaGoolia719
Thank you! That makes sense and helps ease the anxiety a little!
  • @EmilyLove25 I really really hate the shortness of breath. It makes me panic at times. It happens to be even when I’m sitting. Sometimes I try to find a comfy and quiet space and do some deep yogi-type breathing and it helps!
  • Sorry for the TMI ladies but I need some advice. So I woke up early Saturday morning (around 3am) for my usual pee session, only to have diarrhea/loose stools. Yesterday I pretty much had it all day after anytime I ate food, and this morning I'm still having it. I was also experiencing mild on and off cramps and lower back pain yesterday (although the back pain is not uncommon for me). I looked it up online and found articles saying those are all symptoms of pre labor, and not to be concerned. So far I've taken that approach, but I want to make sure I'm not being too laid back about it. I plan on telling my doctor when I see her on Tuesday, but should I be calling in sooner?
  • @darkrose88 I’ve had similar issues for the past few weeks. My OB said it’s your body gearing up for labor but if it becomes more intense/regular contractions, give your dr a call. And of course, drink lots of water
  • @darkrose88 FTM here too so take it or leave it but I'd probably at least call just to update and see if they want you to come it. Would at least help give you some peace of mind. Hoping you feel better today!
  • @sjb2215 and @sbishop426 thanks for the advice ladies! My stomach is still feeling off, but I've decided to wait it out. I don't think I'm having contractions, so I'm not really very concerned.
