Implantation Bleeding

Hey mammas. I need some help.
I woke up early this morning to a gush of blood.. and I mean, a lot of blood! I panicked, and was certain that I was having a miscarriage. I did go to the ER where they did blood work, and then put me in for an ultrasound. I didn't expect to see anything, but the u/s showed that the baby was going great, with a strong heart beat! Yay!! The nurse practitioner who I was assigned to informed me that the bleeding is coming from an implantation blood sac, and to just take it easy for the next little while. Have any of you gone through something like this? I'm still losing a lot of blood (no clots, thankfully) with no pain, so should I still be worried of a miscarriage? How long should I expect the bleeding to last? I still feel very uneasy about all of this, but so thankful that baby seems to be doing okay so far. I would really appreciate some input. Thanks ladies!

Re: Implantation Bleeding

  • hi welcome to the community! I personally never heard of an implantation bleed sack so I can't ofder mjch advice,  but I doubt even moms here who have had different kinds of spotting can tell you how long jt will last just simply because only your dr can provide that kind lf insight with seeing what is going on. Since you went to the ER I would suggest reaching out to your OB for further clarification since "take it easy" really can mean so many different things. I know when i had spotting my last pregnancy my dr put me on pelvic rest meaning no sex and easy exercise until i had a week of no bleeding.

also just so you know we have a great questions thread as well when you have questions too. usually one offs can be missed or buried so we suggest that as a way to get fast answers as well. hope things settle down for you soon and so glad to hear everything is okay

  • Hello and welcome! I've never heard of an implantation bleed sac- like a pp posted, I would think your doctor was referring to a SCH which are very common. You didn't mention how far along you were- I've also heard some women bleed when the placenta attaches as well- again, I'm not familiar with it but it's not uncommon. I know any bleeding in pregnancy is so scary but it's very reassuring that you heard the hb! I would definitely follow up with your ob or whoever you are seeing for your prenatal care, they'll be the best people to answer these types of questions (most also have an on-call nurse line). Situations like this are tricky to say how long or how much you will bleed for because every woman is so different. I hope you get some reassurance soon!
Feel free to post a little about yourself in our introductions thread and read through our **read first** thread for a little information on how this board stays organized. Like pp mentioned, posts like this often get lost. Jump in on any thread whenever you're ready, we've got a great group of women here!
  • Hello! Welcome to the group! I had the same thing happen with my first, talk about scary! My first is now six years old. They told me it was likely implantation bleeding- which made no sense bc there was so much blood. It was the only time I bled with him, I would still reach out to your OB to make sure it’s not a SCH bleed, you’ll need to take it easy and rest if it is. Like the other ladies said, you may find more info in the symptoms thread,  best of luck!

  • Thank you all so much for your input. I am quite new to the forums on here and did try to find a thread where it would be appropriate to ask. I'll take a closer look for the "questions" thread. :)
But this has helped already. I am 7weeks 4days, so still quite early. I'm scheduled to see my OB for the first time Dec 22, but I will call to see if I can get in earlier. There is still quite a bit of bleeding, but hoping it'll end soon.
  • @orempel36 hopefully even if you can't get in any sooner they can see your er info or give you some advice in the mean time :) so sorry you are dealing with this though

  • I had the identical thing happen to me when I was pregnant with DD. A sudden gush of red blood, followed by 2 days of bleeding. At the time I thought it was a weird period as I was on birth control and had no idea I was pregnant (I found out some 2-2.5 weeks after this "period." To this day I have no idea what happened. My pregnancy with DD was uncomplicated and I delivered a healthy 41 weeker.

  • I’m not a clinical healthcare provider but this sounds really hopeful. The fact that you saw a healthy baby on the u/s is great! I also think it’s good that they identified a source for your bleeding. I would call your dr because they may want to move your appt up based on all of this info. Or they may not, but as @lindsayleigh1989 suggested they may at least be able to look at your ER info and give you some suggestions/thoughts.

  • I had bleeding monday, and then more bleeding last night. The doctor confirmed it was SCH. It sounds similar to what you described. I would definitely call your OB for their specialist opinion so they can set you up on treatment if needed
  • @lindsayleigh1989@stlmegs @Crystal321 My OB office hours are closed, so I called my family doctor instead. Unfortunately, he was booked solid today, but he did look over my u/s and results from the ER, and did not seem to be concerned. So that gives me some hope. I have still been losing lots of blood, with cramps that lasted 5-10 minutes that have been making me feel uneasy. If this persists, I will make another trip to the ER. I would like to get some more information on SCH from the doctor there, and get confirmation that that is what's happening to me. So many questions still.
Thank you again for you input! It really helps to hear that this isn't as uncommon as I first thought.

Tbh, 5 to 10 minute cramps and lots of bleeding does not sound like implantation bleeding to me, more like SCH. I am by no means a doctor though! Be careful and take it easy!
  • @Crystal321 My thoughts exactly. Thank you!
  • yeah i would definitely take it easy

  • I spotted for 3 days and cramped last week. Doc had seen a small clot just a few days before it happened. On call RN suggested taking Tylenol and laying on my side for a few hours chugging down water. If my pain didn’t go away despite the Tylenol she said to go to ER. Luckily everything stopped and my doc doesn’t seem concerned.
On another note i bled all first tri with DS and had to be on bedrest.
    Hope you feel better soon!!
  • @wildtot Bleeding during pregnancies is definitely a scary thing. So glad to hear that your pain subsided and everything seems to be going well! Wishing you the best with the rest of your pregnancy.
