Physical health check-in 12/1

(I skipped last week because who want to take fitness a day after Thanksgiving?)

This thread is for those who are trying to maintain physical activity throughout pregnancy. It can be walking around the block, hitting the gym, training for a marathon, and everything in between.

There is no physical activity too small during pregnancy.

Your motivation for getting in some exercise this weekend, since we all need to work off extra pie-

How far along are you?

What type of activity/activities have you been doing?

How are you feeling about your activity? Any recent successes you want to share? Any challenges coming up?

Questions, raves, rants, concerns?

GTKY- Have you changed anything fitness wise since becoming pregnant?  Water intake? New brace? Belly bands? Extra stretching?

What type of activity/activities have you been doing?
    Kickboxing class

How are you feeling about your activity? Any recent successes you want to share? Any challenges coming up?
Feeling pretty good. Between headaches and schedules I couldn't get to the gym for a week so last night I went a little extra and burned off some stress.

    Questions, raves, rants, concerns?
Nothing for now. Trying to really maintain going 3 days a week, but it's hard. DH doesn't want to push me anymore because he wants me to be safe and the baby to be safe. So that stinks because he was a huge pusher before I got pregnant.
I am glad I finally have a bump and not a beer gut in my gym clothes. I still rub my belly a lot to clue people in, haha.

I've been wearing a belly band for several weeks and it helps a ton with bouncage since I had a belly left over from the twins. I also bring my water to every station and drink it instead of drinking every third station like I did pre pregnancy. I have also been trying to stretch a bit beforehand and didn't do that before. Another fun thing is I have to eat a bowl of cereal at 3 if I am going to workout at 5. Otherwise I'm too hungry to concentrate. Then I come home and eat dinner at 615 with the family.  Then I eat cereal at 830 at night. This kid loves food

Not good!  I haven't been to the gym in two weeks!  A friend is staying over tonight and I'll be out late Saturday for a wedding so it's not looking like I'll get there any time this weekend either.  Maybe I'll take the dogs out for a long walk.  I've been feeling really achy and stiff lately so I know I need to get moving again.

    Questions, raves, rants, concerns?
Ranting that my husband goes to the gym the mornings that I WFH.  I know his health is important too and he SAH so he needs some me-time but my WFH days would be the best time for me to go to the gym, or even sleep in a little.

GTKY- Have you changed anything fitness wise since becoming pregnant?  Water intake? New brace? Belly bands? Extra stretching?
Nothing other than actually starting to work out again.  I know I need to drink more water, especially when I'm at the gym.  I always bring it with me but never drink it.

@suchaglencoco I'm just curious, does the kickboxing instructor know you're pregnant?  I'm not going to start any classes at this point but I was wondering if I did, would I tell the instructor at the beginning of the class?
  • @fraufarbissina, yes, all of the trainers at my studio know I'm pregnant. Its like a Curves setup where you go and jump in at one of the 9 rounds. I've been going there long enough to know what I'll feel comfortable doing at every round. There are a few things I don't do now, but I know enough to make up my own stuff as needed.

Next week is my year anniversary there so I was doing it for quite awhile before getting pregnant. And actually, the owner was one of the first to know!  I went and told him in wouldn't be in for 4 weeks at the beginning for precaution so he actually put my account on hold so I didn't get charged that month, super sweet.

If you are going to start anything new, you should definitely tell the instructor and talk to your ob first.  I know they don't recommend starting anything crazy while pregnant.
  • @suchaglencoco that's nice of them to hold your account!  I'm definitely not planning on starting anything new.  Was just a random thought I had while wishing the clock on the treadmill moved faster.
  • Haha I get that!!
I spoke with him this week and he was asking how it was going. He told me t remind him when I'm close to my due date so we can work out another hold on the account. Very nice of him again because I have a great rate from their slow time last year. So if I closed my account and reopened next spring/summer, it'd be much higher due to peak season.
  • @suchaglencoco haha I catch myself rubbing my belly too. I try to stop myself though bc my studio requires a doctor's note if you are pregnant and I haven't handed it in yet. I don't want them to make me change to the easier exercises yet, so I'm holding off until 20ish weeks.

    How far along are you?
    17 weeks 5 days

What type of activity/activities have you been doing?
Barre 6x per week. I finally went running (only 1 mile) for the first time in a month.

How are you feeling about your activity? Any recent successes you want to share? Any challenges coming up?
I really would like to run more, but I am so unmotivated after I do barre. I'm like, "Yay! I'm done for the day!" But barre is really easy. I need to step it up. I probably should just make myself a schedule. I stick well to written schedules.

    Questions, raves, rants, concerns?
Rant: My IT band was bugging me when I went running. :rage: It used to only hurt once I hit serious mileage. Blergh.

GTKY- Have you changed anything fitness wise since becoming pregnant?  Water intake? New brace? Belly bands? Extra stretching?
I'm taking it a ton easier now that I am further along in my pregnancy. It's kind of nice to take it easy. (Except, as said, I really need to run more. That's the one slack that is unacceptable.)

What type of activity/activities have you been doing? Running, walking, and yoga

How are you feeling about your activity? Any recent successes you want to share? Any challenges coming up? Better.  I am getting in at least 3 days a week right now, which is my goal.  I am feeling less and less motivated to run, which is bumming me out.

Questions, raves, rants, concerns? Rant- My sciatica has been flaring up, so I have been doing a lot of stretching and seeing my chiropractor.  Rave- Going to see Something Rotten tonight and I am so excited!

GTKY- Have you changed anything fitness wise since becoming pregnant?  Water intake? New brace? Belly bands? Extra stretching? Well, I've become less active and been eating worse, so nothing good, LOL!  Honestly, this pregnancy is kicking my ass and I an just trying to eat what I can and exercise when I have the energy and my HG is under control.

@suchaglencoco I totally stand in the "pregnant woman stance" to indicate that I am not just chubby!  Do you go to 9Rounds?  They just opened one by us.

@fraufarbissina I wish DH would have kept up his routine.  We were on a great workout routine this summer and when I fell off the wagon, so did he.  We are good about keeping each other accountable for a run on the weekends, though.

@silverhope I do better with a schedule, too.  My weekend date with my running buddy keeps me accountable and it makes me get up and go.
  • @mileswithmyles, yes!!! 9 Round, love it!!!
What sretches are you doing for sciatica? I've been having some issues on my left side.
  • Thank you! I'll this tonight.
  • @suchaglencoco You're kickboxing class sounds really fun! This kid also loves cereal, I want some now.
@silverhope I've always been curious about barre. Are there different levels of difficulty? Is it just easy for you because you are in shape because of it?

What type of activity/activities have you been doing?
I've been running 5ish times a week, like 15-20 miles a week. I've been attempting at least 15-20 minutes of strength training after but I've slacked so much on that since becoming pregnant. I joined a gym yesterday, now that it's colder out, so that should help motivate me to hang around after runs and do a little more.

How are you feeling about your activity? Any recent successes you want to share? Any challenges coming up?
I feel good about my running, happy that I've been keeping up with it. I say this every check in but I really want to start back into yoga and I haven't done that yet.

    Questions, raves, rants, concerns?
What ab exercises do you guys like to do? I've been avoiding them and I know that there are safe ones out there that I should probably start doing. Abs were one of my favorite areas to work out before pregnancy so I miss it!

GTKY- Have you changed anything fitness wise since becoming pregnant?  Water intake? New brace? Belly bands? Extra stretching?
I run much slower! Like 2-3 minutes per mile slower. I usually spend extra time stretching out my hips and back as well. Also, ya'll have motivated me to order my belly band! I figure I will need it soon anyway so why not have it on hand.
  • @rachelg777 Barre difficultly just depends on the studio. I've tried the following chains: (a) Pure Barre, (b) barre3, (c) Physique 57, (d) Studio Barre, and (e) the Bar Method. (I've also been to local studios with barre workouts that aren't a chain, which are usually pretty good.)

I'd say (e) is the easiest, and that's what I am doing now. They have a "Bar Move" class that is slightly more challenging than their daily "mixed level" class. There is basically no cardio in The Bar Method and the abs exercises are IMO super easy, so that is why I rate it easiest.

I'd say (a)-(d) are all challenging in different ways. (c) has a really challenging thigh workout while (d) has the best cardio. I liked (a) and (d) for booty workouts. I did (b) a few years ago, so I can't remember specifics about it, but it was def more challenging than my current (e). If you have a studio, you should at least give it a try! They usually have deals for newcomers (free first class, groupons for newbies, first month discounted, etc.). (d) is probably my favorite.

For your question on ab workouts: I am still doing all my regular ab work because I'm not feeling any pain when I do so. If/when it starts hurting, I will stop. A girl in my barre class is 8 months pregnant and she still does most of the abs exercises, but she sits up (she is propped up with mats behind her back) while the rest of us are lying on our backs or using only one mat. I plan to stop lying on my back for ab work around 20 or so weeks.

  • @silverhope Thanks for explaining! I do have one nearby, maybe I should give it a try. It sounds modifiable if I don’t feel like doing something. I guess I stopped with abs stuff because while it didn’t hurt it felt “uncomfortable” or just awkward. I’m gonna start incorporating a little everyday day and see how it feels. I know those muscles will help with delivery and recovery...
  • @rachelg777 You are killing it!  I lost a lot of speed when I was pregnant with DS. But a mile is a mile any way you slice it.

  • @rachelg777, I love my kickboxing. It has gotten me into way better shape and it gets out a lot of stress.

I have stopped doing any and all about workouts. I didn't like them anyways.

What type of activity/activities have you been doing?
OrangeTheory Fitness. It’s a one hour class that combines cardio, strength, and power. I love it.

How are you feeling about your activity? Any recent successes you want to share? Any challenges coming up?
I feel good. I have slowed my running pace down quite a bit. Also more walking breaks in between running. I no longer do the ab work on my back flat or (obviously not) on my belly. I modify those with some sort of plank or oblique side something. Still rowing the same and doing leg and upper body strength training the same.

    Questions, raves, rants, concerns?
No. Only one rant at myself- I NEED TO DRINK MORE WATER. Get it together!

GTKY- Have you changed anything fitness wise since becoming pregnant?  Water intake? New brace? Belly bands? Extra stretching?
already answered most of those. I want a belly band for working out- what kind do you guys use?
  • @gracelane3 I ordered the Gabrialla Elastic Maternity Band. I haven't used it yet so I'm not sure if it's any good. It was a bit bulkier looking than I wanted but it had good reviews from runners.
  • Well I am giving myself a pat on the back today. I got up and moving early this morning so I could fit in a workout before our twins' birthday party. I made myself do stuff in the kitchen at 630 am, ran to the grocery store at 7, and got to the gym by 8. It really helped me release nervous energy and anxiety so I was really calm and "go with the flow" for their party when it started at 11. I actually started to have a bad pain from my sciatic nerve around 1030, but a couple of family members came a bit early and they were more than happy to be directed on what needed to be finished.
