Breastfeeding Books

I'd like to find a good BFing book.  Can you recommend any that were helpful to you?

 TIA!

Re: Breastfeeding Books

  • not a book, but I thought www.kellymom.com was very helpful.

  • I read Babywise and loved it! it worked great for eli! ?If you decide to read it and have any questions, feel free to ask me! ?I just took the premise of the book and modified to our lives and Eli's personality. ?I recommend not reading too many breast feeding books because then you will make yourself crazy by reading so many different techniques. ?I chose Babywise because most of the people that I talked to had a great experience using it! ?Good luck!
  • I second the kellymom website.

I also have "The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers" by Jack Newman.  It was recommended by the woman who taught our breastfeeding class.  I haven't read it cover to cover, but I think it is a good resource to have as questions pop up.

Finally, I would highly recommend taking a BFing class.  It helped DH and I to both get answers and to become totally committed to BFing as opposed to the "if it works, it works" mentality that we went in with.  As a result, I know that I was much more confident and calm in those first few days/weeks which I'm sure made it easier for Caleb.  I think that the $20 we paid were well worth it and have probably saved us hundreds in formula costs.

  • I'm a big fan of any of the Dr Sears books, so I'd rec "The Breastfeeding Book"  by Drs Martha and William Sears. Also, La Leche League has a book called, "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" that's great. Both are very breastfeeding focused, so if you haven't made a specific decision between breastfeeding and formula, that's good to know ahead of time so that it's not overwhelming.

Ditto the kellymom.com suggestion - it's so nice to just search on there for an answer to something!

I can't remember what area you're in, but if you know already which hospital you'll be going to, check with their class list and lactation consultants to see if they have breastfeeding classes and any new mom groups that get together. We loved our breastfeeding class - it was by far the most helpful that we took! At the new mom groups, they usually have them for the LCs to help with breastfeeding and you can go in and weigh your baby, have them eat, then go weigh them again to see how much they're actually eating, etc. Plus it's a helpful place to meet other moms with newborns:)

  • I'm reading The Nursing Mother's Companion and have found it informative and an easy read... they have sections on surviving the first week(s).  I do have to agree with pp that the BFing class I took was so worth it.  Obviously I haven't had any experience yet but I feel more confident about bfing and feel that I'll have support from the LC.  She'll call to check in every week, gives out her home number, and facilitates the new mom's group each week.  She's also aware of my PCOS and informed about how that can affect milk supply.  GL!

  • I have used kellymom.com as a reference point and I also read the Nursing Mothers Companion - it has been very helpful.  I also received a good information packet from my BF class that was also filled with good info.
